THE NEW YORK TIMES — OPINION — NYT GUEST ESSAY: Over the past month, the world has watched as the United States flexed its military muscle across the Caribbean Sea. It has blown up three boats, killing at least 17 people in what U.N. officials have called extrajudicial executions. It has deployed amphibious vessels, ships loaded with guided missile systems and a nuclear-powered submarine to the region. It has sent 10 F-35 stealth fighter jets to Puerto Rico. And it has done so, the White House claims, to counter a huge drug-trafficking effort headed by none other than President Nicolás Maduro of Venezuela.
To be clear: Venezuela is not one of America’s main illicit drug suppliers. Venezuela accounts for very little of the cocaine that enters the United States, and it plays almost no role in the fentanyl trade, according to the Drug Enforcement Administration. That hasn’t prevented the Trump administration from slapping a $50 million bounty on Mr. Maduro’s head or Attorney General Pam Bondi from calling him “one of the largest narcotraffickers in the world and a threat to our national security.”
The regime in Caracas is certainly not without its sins. Mr. Maduro is a dictator who has facilitated illicit commerce in gold, money laundering, arms and drugs. He has brutally repressed his opponents, crushed civil rights and democratic institutions and presided over one of the world’s worst economic catastrophes. Roughly eight million people have fled the country since he came to power in 2013. But the threat that Venezuela’s drug trafficking networks are said to pose does not justify an American military mobilization this large — at least not convincingly. Trump ‘Determined’ the U.S. Is Now in a War With Drug Cartels, Congress Is Told
THE NEW YORK TIMES: A notice calls the people the U.S. military recently killed on suspicion of drug smuggling in the Caribbean Sea “unlawful combatants.”
President Trump has decided that the United States is engaged in a formal “armed conflict” with drug cartels his team has labeled terrorist organizations and that suspected smugglers for such groups are “unlawful combatants,” the administration said in a confidential notice to Congress this week.
The notice was sent to several congressional committees and obtained by The New York Times. It adds new detail to the administration’s thinly articulated legal rationale for why three U.S. military strikes the president ordered on boats in the Caribbean Sea last month, killing all 17 people aboard them, should be seen as lawful rather than murder.
Mr. Trump’s move to formally deem his campaign against drug cartels as an active armed conflict means he is cementing his claim to extraordinary wartime powers, legal specialists said. In an armed conflict, as defined by international law, a country can lawfully kill enemy fighters even when they pose no threat, detain them indefinitely without trials and prosecute them in military courts.
Geoffrey S. In den letzten Wochen hat sich die neue Bundesregierung beim Thema Arbeit in der Bevölkerung nicht gerade mit Ruhm bekleckert. Und nun kommt der nächste kontroverse Vorschlag. Friedrich Merz (CDU) will die 48-Stunden-Woche einführen und den Acht-Stunden-Tag beerdigen.
Beschäftigte sollen künftig bis zu 13 Stunden am Stück arbeiten dürfen – begründet mit dem Versprechen größerer Flexibilität. In Wahrheit steht dahinter dieselbe Logik, die Merz schon bei seinen Tiraden über die angeblich „faulen“ Deutschen bemühte: Wir müssen einfach länger arbeiten, dann kommt der Wohlstand zurück. Diese Idee scheint mir sehr unklug zu sein! Wer in seinen wilden Träumen hätte geglaubt, daß die Deutschen faul wären, daß die Deutschen nicht lang genug arbeiteten? Sicherlich arbeiten die Deutschen schon jetzt lang genug! Die Wurzel Deutschlands wirtschaftliche Probleme müssen sicherlich anderswo liegen. Was will Friederich Merz eigentlich? Arbeiter bis zum Tode verarbeiten lassen und die Superreichen ihres luxuriösen Lebens weiter genießen können? So scheint es mir wirklich.
