» | Tagesspiegel | Dienstag, 27. Oktober 2026

EU Australia Deal Shocks Global Markets with Billions in Tariff Savings | World News

Oct 26, 2026 | European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has announced a landmark Free Trade Agreement between the European Union and Australia, marking a major breakthrough after nearly a decade of negotiations. The agreement is expected to boost economic growth, strengthen exports, reduce tariffs, and deepen strategic cooperation between the two partners.

The deal could add nearly $8 billion to Australia's GDP and save EU exporters approximately €1 billion in tariffs. Australian industrial goods will gain tariff-free access to the European market, while EU exports to Australia are projected to increase by 33% over the next decade. Beyond trade, both sides are strengthening cooperation on critical minerals, including lithium, rare earths, and tungsten, while launching a new security and defense partnership. The agreement also opens the way for negotiations on Australia's participation in the Horizon Europe research program. With shared commitments to democracy, international law, and climate neutrality by 2050, the EU-Australia partnership could reshape economic and strategic ties. Watch for the key details, major benefits, and global implications of this historic agreement.

The Guardian View on Lula’s Comeback: A Victory for Brazil and the World, as Well as a Trump Rebuff

THE GUARDIAN — EDITORIAL: A fourth presidential victory gives Lula another chance to defend democracy, protect the Amazon and deliver for Brazil’s working people

Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s win in Brazil’s presidential election is a triumph for him, his country and the world. The 80-year-old incumbent snatched victory from the jaws of defeat, blocked the rise of the far right and saved the planetary air-conditioning system of the Amazon from irreparable destruction. Known universally as Lula, he made history by becoming the first candidate to win a presidential run-off after finishing second in the opening round. In triumphing against Flávio Bolsonaro, the leftist stopped what could have been the most dangerous consolidation of authoritarian rule in Brazil since military rule ended. A Bolsonaro presidency could have used a rightwing Congress to extend presidential terms and pack the supreme court, entrenching power for generations.

Lula seemed to have been energised by his first-round defeat by Mr Bolsonaro. The three-time president initially pitted his extraordinary life and record against a 45-year-old senator married to controversy. But voters wanted answers to economic insecurity, rising prices and poor public services. Lula reversed course in the second round, offering immediate relief from everyday costs and indebtedness – including to the rising number of self-employed voters whom his rightwing opponent had been courting. Popular mobilisation transformed the runoff into a race to stop a Bolsonaro restoration with student protests, mass demonstrations and a 10 million-strong “Lula’s Army” WhatsApp channel. It seemed to work. Nearly 5 million more people voted in the second round of the Brazilian election than the first. » | Editorial | Monday, October 26, 2026

Trump really does need to be rebuffed, too! Trump and his flawed, poisonous policies have been like a cancer on the world. And they have been just as malignant. Moreover, they have metastasized just as cancer does! And they have killed just as cancer does as well!

So where is this so-believed and so-beloved Almighty God? He appears to be as phantasmagorical as He is illusory.

During all of Trump’s destruction of a once relatively orderly world, God has demonstrated His apparent powerlessness! Either that or His insouciance. He appears to be as loving of His so-called children as He is careless of them.

If God really exists, it high time He took Trump off our hands; it’s high time He put a stop to Trump’s proclivities for incarcerating and killing innocent people, destroying a once functioning democracy, destroying countries, and stealing money that belongs to the people in order to to line his own pockets and bolster his bank accounts.

God is famous for having many mansions in the sky. He should give Trump one of them to relieve the peoples of the world of this intolerable chaos, this ever-growing drift towards fascism. After the contagion of Trump, the world is in dire need a great healing! — © Mark Alexander

Audi Boss Under Fire in Germany for Trump Rally Appearance

THE GUARDIAN: Gernot Döllner criticised for in-person announcement of major investment in US days before midterm elections

The head of the luxury carmaker Audi is under fire in Germany for appearing at a rally with Donald Trump just days before the US midterm elections, to announce billions of dollars of investment in battleground state Georgia.

Gernot Döllner joined Trump on stage after the US president gave a speech criticised by the head of an elected body of employees at Audi’s parent company, Volkswagen, as being full of “racism, sexism, transphobia [and] contempt for democracy”.

Daniela Cavallo, the head of the VW works council, added that anyone who heard Trump’s speech and then saw that Döllner had become an active participant in the event must “sink into the ground with shame”, according to internal company communications released to German media.

She said the investment deal and Döllner’s appearance showed VW’s management had allowed itself to be “turned into a puppet in the propaganda show of a highly dubious political figure”.

Isabel Cademartori, the transport spokesperson for Germany’s Social Democrats – part of the country’s ruling coalition – called Döllner’s actions a “disgrace”. She added this was particularly so “in view of the history of the Volkswagen Group”, in an apparent reference to VW’s founding as a showcase company under the Nazis. » | Deborah Cole in Berlin | Monday, October 26, 2026

Flávio Bolsonaro Ordered to Hand Over Passport in Money Laundering Inquiry

THE NEW YORK YIMES: Brazil’s Supreme Court told the police to seize passport of Mr. Bolsonaro, who lost the presidential election, over his links to an investigation.

Brazil’s Supreme Court on Monday ordered the police to seize the passport of Flávio Bolsonaro, the presidential candidate defeated in Sunday’s election, because he is under criminal investigation related to a money laundering scheme.

The ruling, issued by Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, stems from an inquiry into Mr. Bolsonaro’s links to a Brazilian lawyer who is accused of laundering more than $1 billion through a vast fraud scheme, according to a court document reviewed by The New York Times.

Mr. Bolsonaro, a right-wing senator, came on the radar of the authorities when the police said earlier this month that they had discovered that Mr. Bolsonaro had access to the bank accounts of a company owned by the lawyer, Willer Tomaz. In May 2025, a person employed by the lawyer asked the bank to revoke the senator’s access to the accounts, according to a Federal Police report reviewed by the Times.

The ruling also ordered Mr. Bolsonaro to stay away from Mr. Tomaz, a close friend of the right-wing senator. Mr. Tomaz has denied any wrongdoing and rejected claims that Mr. Bolsonaro managed his company’s account. » | Ana Ionova, Alice Maciel and Thayz Guimarães | Reporting from Brasília. | Monday, October 26, 2026

Brazil Shocks the World by Rejecting US-backed Fascist in Presidential Election

Oct 26, 2026 | Brazilian leftists pulled off a jaw-dropping political upset by electing President Lula da Silva to a 4th term.

Predictably, Bolsonaro is calling for the election results to be “annulled” and American fascists are already pressuring Trump to intervene on his behalf. In this video we’ll talk about how Brazil did the unthinkable.

A Life in Waiting: Lady Glenconner on Royal Secrets and Survival

Lady Glenconner Interview: Princess Margaret, King Charles, and New Book

At 94 years old, Lady Glenconner remains one of Britain's most captivating royal confidantes. In this delightfully witty and deeply moving interview, she sits down to discuss her final memoir, Trunks and Tiaras, reflecting on nearly a century of high-society travel, private royal moments, and personal resilience.

As the former maid of honour who carried Queen Elizabeth II's coronation train and a guest at King Charles III's coronation, Lady Glenconner shares rare eyewitness memories of the monarchy in private. She recalls her decades as Princess Margaret's lady-in-waiting—including why the Princess forbade her from drinking champagne, surviving exhausting transatlantic flights on 1960s Stratocruisers, and weekends at Royal Lodge with the Queen Mother.

She also speaks with characteristic honesty about devastating personal heartbreaks: losing two sons during the AIDS epidemic and to addiction, nursing her youngest son through a five-month coma, surviving a volatile marriage, her broken engagement to Princess Diana's father, and why she flatly dismisses Earl Spencer's controversial claims about King Charles.

How Did Brazil Veteran-leader Lula Upset Bolsonaro? • FRANCE 24 English

Oct 26, 2026 | Two days shy of his 81st birthday… Brazil’s Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva emerging as the comeback kid. Coming from behind in the polls after a bitter campaign where he often showed his age, Lula becoming the first candidate since Brazil’s return to democracy in the 1980s to win the presidential runoff after trailing in the first round.

How did the Workers Party leader turn a 2-point-2 million vote deficit against the far-right's Flávio Bolsonaro into a 4-point-4 million vote win? Reminder that three short weeks ago, most races at the federal and state level broke the way of conservatives and the far-right? More broadly, how did Lula break the right’s winning streak in the Americas?

While blasting Meta and accusing the US and its tech titans of meddling, the incumbent managed to turn around his own digital campaign the time of a runoff campaign. We'll ask about Congressman André Janones who organized in a hurry on Meta-owned WhatsApp. How does the powerhouse of Latin America walk the line between the United States, its top trading partner China and the rest of the planet?

Speaking of the rest of the planet, it can be tempting to draw conclusions from Brazil's surprise result... this as the Middle East holds its breath over Tuesday’s general election in Israel, as the campaign gets nastier ahead of next week’s US midterms… with big elections coming up in Spain, Italy, Poland and here in France. Each case is of course different. So what can Lula's Brazil teach us?

Lula's 'Extraordinary Victory' Faces Growing Middle Class, Deeply-entrenched Bolsonarismo & Big Tech

Brazil: Lula Wins Stunning Upset over Flávio Bolsonaro in Blow to Far-right & Trump

Oct 26, 2026 | Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has won a record fourth term in office, defeating far-right challenger Flávio Bolsonaro by 4 million votes in a runoff election on Sunday. Flávio Bolsonaro is the son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, who remains under house arrest for plotting a coup against Lula four years ago. The younger Bolsonaro, who narrowly defeated Lula in the first round of voting earlier this month, is now refusing to concede. Lula's surprise comeback comes after weeks of student-led organizing and campaigning on his behalf, and amid accusations that U.S.-based tech companies were suppressing Lula's reach online in favor of his Trump-aligned opponent. "The amount of organizing, the amount of marches and rallies, campaigning, pamphlets that we've seen the last three weeks has been something that I have never seen in my entire life, ever, covering elections for decades in so many different countries. It is absolutely unprecedented," says Brazil-based journalist Michael Fox. "It is an absolute game-changer for the region."

Fascists and people on the far-right always seem to have trouble accepting the results of fair elections which go against them. This seems to be a pattern that repeats itself. Flávio’s father before him and of course their big fascist chum(p) in America, who also has a penchant for rejecting results of elections which go against them. It’s time for these people to grow up! Lula Wins Brazil’s Presidency, in Stunning Blow to Latin America’s Right

THE NEW YORK TIMES: President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva triumphed over Flávio Bolsonaro, the eldest son of the right-wing leader he defeated four years ago.

Brazilian voters on Sunday handed the leftist president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, a fourth term in office and a surprise victory over Flávio Bolsonaro, his right-wing challenger, in a striking rebuke to a conservative surge sweeping Latin America.

Mr. Bolsonaro refused to accept the outcome and said it was the result of foul play, increasing the risk of unrest over the election result.

The rejection by voters of Mr. Bolsonaro, the son of a former president jailed for attempting a coup four years ago, is also a loss for President Trump, who had embraced the Bolsonaro family and the region’s rising right.

Mr. Lula, in contrast to many world leaders, has often and defiantly clashed with Mr. Trump, and his victory suggests that Latin America’s left-wing forces still wield influence despite a string of losses across the hemisphere. This is the first leftist victory following seven straight wins by right-wing leaders in the region over the last 18 months.

“I would like to thank the Brazilian people for the generosity they have shown me for a long time,” Mr. Lula said, during a victory speech in São Paulo, flanked by his wife, running mate and allies. » | Ana Ionova and Adam B. The CLOSETocracy

Premiered Oct 22, 2026 | Bombshell documentary features first-hand accounts from three men alleging paid sexual encounters with the late senator, Lindsey Graham, and examines the contrast between his alleged private conduct and public opposition to LGBTQ+ rights.

The CLOSETocracy is an investigative short documentary produced by Swamp Watch Studios and Tystnaden Films. TYT is an exclusive distribution partner.

This documentary needs to be watched by those who wish to be informed about what goes on in politics today, especially because it shows clearly the HYPOCRACY of many western politicians, more especially when it comes to gay rights and matters of homosexuality.

This particular documentary is about the late Lindsey Graham, but I feel sure that he would not have been alone in politics in hiding his sexual proclivities. There must be very many closeted gay politicians in Congress who vote against gay rights.

Because this short documentary could offend those who are hypersensitive or who are a tad prudish, I have decided not to embed this documentary on this website. Instead, I have decided to provide you with a link for you to be able to watch the short documentary on YouTube itself.

Be warned: This is no documentary for the narrow-minded or the easily offended. Furthermore, it is not suitable viewing for minors, either. It is, however, a very interesting documentary. Essential viewing for those who care about the quality of political leadership both in America and the rest of the West.

Obama Lambasts Trump Over Iran War As U.S. Midterm Poll Battle Heats Up

Oct 25, 2026 | Former US President Barack Obama has criticised Donald Trump’s handling of the Iran war during a campaign rally in Ohio, connecting the conflict to higher costs facing American households. Obama argued that military escalation is putting pressure on energy prices and family budgets. The speech comes as Democrats seek to challenge the Trump administration’s foreign policy and economic record ahead of the midterm elections. With Iran tensions continuing to shape Washington’s agenda, the war is emerging as a key political flashpoint. The remarks highlight how foreign conflicts are feeding into domestic election debates.

“Musk”: Alex Gibney on New Film, Legal Threats & Elon Musk Spending $366M to Help GOP in Midterms

Oct 13, 2026 | We speak with the Academy Award-winning director Alex Gibney about his new documentary Musk, an expansive, nearly four-hour examination of the world’s first trillionaire and how he has amassed unprecedented power in business, technology and politics. The film traces Elon Musk’s early ventures and the rise of SpaceX and Tesla, examining the role of government support in their growth. It also explores his acquisition of Twitter, now X; his alliance with President Donald Trump and the MAGA movement; and his role in the Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, whose cuts devastated federal programs, including USAID.

Gibney says Musk has carefully crafted an image of a “polymath” who can solve the world’s most pressing problems, but that he is really “kind of a ruthless businessman” willing to do whatever it takes to succeed, including “a series of elaborate cons” to win government support for his companies.

Bernie Explains Trump's Playbook

Oct 25, 2026 | For 50 years, wealth has been transferred from the bottom 90% to the top 1%.

Trump wants you blaming immigrants, trans people and other scapegoats instead of the billionaires who are rigging the economy.

That is how demagogues operate.

Steve Rosenberg: Moscow Perceives Trump Criticism of Ukraine "as a Mandate to Continue Military Pressure."

Oct 25, 2026 | How is Donald Trump’s criticism of President Zelensky interpreted in Moscow? “Moscow perceives these words as a mandate to continue military pressure,” writes one Russian paper. I ask Muscovites to name one word that’s important to them and read what Russian schoolchildren are taught about “defence of the Motherland.”
