Burt Prelutsky: Why Jews Vote the Way They Do

TOWNHALL.COM: If I am asked one question by my readers far more frequently than any other, it’s why do so many American Jews insist on aligning themselves with the far left. Believe me, being Jewish myself, it’s the question I most frequently ask myself.

It’s certainly not because Jews are stupid, evil, unpatriotic or dependent on government handouts for their survival, four reasons that certainly explain why millions of my fellow Americans will eagerly line up to vote for any political crackpot so long as he or she is running as a Democrat.

Having given it a great deal of thought, I believe the explanation is to be found in the way we tend to be raised. It’s not so strange if you think about it. After all, most people are Catholics or Protestants, Mormons or Muslims, because that was the religion practiced in their homes. Well, for most Jews, liberal politics played an essential role in their upbringing. It’s why a much higher percentage of us vote for Democrats than attend synagogue regularly or keep kosher.

Islam Will Conquer Rome, Insists Former Jordanian Minister

CATHOLIC NEWS AGENCY: A former Jordanian minister has seized upon commentary about the decline of Western power, saying on Arabic-language television that Islam will conquer Rome. He went on to say that Spain is an Islamic land that should be retaken and that America has begun to realize its “end is near.”

The remarks by former Jordanian Minister of Religious Endowment Ali Al-Faqir were broadcast on Al-Aqsa TV on May 2.

According to a transcript prepared by the Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI), Al-Faqir said Palestine from the Jordan to the Mediterranean is an Islamic land. “Spain – Andalusia – is also the land of Islam,” he said.

“Islamic lands that were occupied by the enemies will once again become Islamic. Furthermore, we will reach beyond these countries, which are lost at one point. We proclaim that we will conquer Rome, like Constantinople was conquered once, and as it will be conquered again.

“America has occupied, thundered, and foamed with rage, and proclaimed, like Pharaoh, ‘I am your supreme God,’ but it will come to its end, and they have begun to realize that their end is near,” he said. Former Jordanian Minister Insists Islam Will Conquer Rome >>> | May 10, 2008

BBC: Clashes have flared outside Beirut as Lebanon's army struggled to contain the country's worst internal fighting since its bitter 15-year civil war.

While the capital seemed calm after four days of fighting killed 38 people, violence spread in hills to its east.

Earlier, troops had deployed in the northern city of Tripoli to end battles between Hezbollah sympathisers and supporters of the government.

Thousands fled their homes as running street battles raged overnight.

The violence has triggered fears of a return to Lebanon's 1975-1990 civil war. Fighting Spreads East of Beirut >>> | Sunday, May 11, 2008

Media Mum as McCain ‘Spiritual Guide’ Calls for the Destruction of Islam

TWIN CITIES DAILY PLANET: Islam “intends, through violence, to conquer the world,” and “America was founded in part with the intention of seeing this false religion destroyed.” So says pastor Rod Parsley, who on February 26 endorsed John McCain for president. McCain has praised Parsley up and down, for his “leadership” and “guidance” and as a “moral compass” and a “spiritual guide.”

Hailed by McCain as “one of the truly great leaders in America,” Parsley believes that “Mohammed received revelations from demon spirits not from the living god” and says the U.S. stands as a “bastion against Islam in the world.” But campaign staffers say McCain’s acceptance of Parsley’s endorsement shouldn’t be construed as endorsement of the pastor’s ideology.

As Mother Jones reports, McCain has refrained from criticizing the Cincinnati pastor, “an important political ally in a crucial swing state.” Of course, the mainstream media has so far made barely a peep about McCain and Parsley while continuing to pile on Obama over his links to Rev. Jeremiah Wright. [Source: Media Mum as McCain 'Spiritual Guide' Calls for the Destruction of Islam]

Murdered Norwegian Girl’s Father Begs Arab Billionaire to Hand Over His Son

MAIL ON SUNDAY: The father of the beautiful Norwegian student murdered in London has made an impassioned plea to the man wanted in connection with her killing to give himself up.

Farouk Abdulhak, the son of a billionaire tycoon, was the last person to be seen with 23-year-old Martine Vik Magnussen.

He fled to his native Yemen two days before her body was found, semi-naked and strangled, in the basement of the block of luxury flats where he lived.

From his home in Oslo, Martine's father Petter Magnussen, 56, told The Mail on Sunday: "Martine's loss has turned my life upside-down. I cannot begin to articulate the grief my family and I feel after losing her. To do so would kill me. But I feel an obligation to contribute towards getting justice for my daughter.

"The British police have repeatedly expressed their wish to speak to Farouk in Britain. If he has no information about Martine's death, there is no reason to make himself unavailable to them."

Petter, chief executive officer for a company that makes rescue equipment for Nato, believes that Farouk's father Shaher Abdulhak could be using his money and influence to prevent his son being brought back to Britain.

"As a father I understand the challenge facing Mr Abdulhak on a personal level," said Petter. "But I trust he is able to put himself in my position and sympathise with what my family and I are going through.

"As parents, we raise our children to make the right choices in life. In this case, coming forward to clarify the circumstances of Martine's death is clearly the right thing to do.

"I am convinced Mr Shaher Abdulhak has the authority to help ensure justice prevails. I hope he will use it so our family can continue with our lives in the best way possible." Hand Your Son Over, Murdered Girl's Father Begs Arab Billionaire >>> By Antonia Hoyle | May 11, 2008

Allegra, Bouffant Boris’ First Wife, Teaches Art to Young Muslims and Tries to De-radicalize Them

Allegra, Boris’ first wife, as cover girl for the July/August 1984 edition of Tatler

MAIL ON SUNDAY: They appeared to be the golden couple of Oxford University.

Boris Johnson was the brains who, as the eccentric president of the prestigious Oxford Union, was already earmarked as a future political leader, while Allegra Mostyn-Owen was the ethereal beauty who had been a Tatler cover girl.

Their romance blossomed amid the city's dreaming spires, and they tied the knot in a grand wedding soon after leaving university. But the fairy tale was not to last long – and today their lives are worlds apart.

As Boris began his term as Mayor of London last week, his former wife went to work at an East London mosque where she teaches art to young Muslims.

This was not the life Allegra seemed destined for. As the only daughter of acclaimed Italian writer Gaia Servadio and multimillionaire landowner and art historian William Mostyn-Owen, a privileged existence amid the upper echelons of society seemed assured.

But Allegra, now 43, is said to have been so deeply affected by the collapse of her marriage that she left all that behind to channel her passions into good causes.

She now lives in a modest home in West Kensington, has never remarried and has no children. The Socialite Named Allegra Who Became Boris Johnson's First Wife >>> By Angella Johnson | May 11, 2008

Radical Muslim Preacher Heaps More Embarrassment on Government

SUNDAY EXPRESS: FIREBRAND preacher Abu Qatada is set to heap more embarrassment on the Government with a compensation claim for £500,000 for wrongful imprisonment.

Qatada, 48, once described as Osama bin Laden’s right-hand man in Europe, was granted bail by the Special Immigration Appeals Commission last week after defeating the Government’s attempts to deport him to Jordan.

The radical cleric, who once called on British Muslims to martyr themselves, was convicted in his absence of involvement in two bombings of hotels in Amman in 1998. Tapes of his sermons were also found in a flat in Germany used by some of the 9/11 hijackers.

The Bethlehem-born Muslim was jailed six years ago under anti-terror laws rushed in after the twin towers attacks in 2001. He was released in 2004 but arrested again in 2005.

Last month the Appeal Court ruled that he could not be deported on human rights grounds as some of the evidence against him was allegedly obtained through torture and there was no guarantee he would not be tortured in Jordan.

Terrorism Officials Kidding Themselves and the General Public

UPI: WASHINGTON -- Two documents circulated by U.S. counter-terrorism officials suggest avoiding the terms "Muslim" or "Islamic" when referring to militant groups.

The National Counterterrorism Center distributed two documents in April urging U.S. officials to use terms like extremists, totalitarian or cult when describing al-Qaida and other militant groups.

The NCTC documents caution against using terms like "jihad" or "mujahedin" because their Arabic meaning -- "struggle" and "strugglers" -- "unintentionally legitimize" terrorism, United Press International reported Wednesday.

There' s a growing consensus (in the Bush administration) that we need to move away from that language," said one former Cabinet official.

The documents advise officials to think of al-Qaida an "illegitimate political organization" to avoid supporting the group's ideology that uses religious doctrine to justify violent acts.

It also recommends against using variations of "Islam" because lay audiences make no distinction between Islamism, the political doctrine based on the religious teachings of Islam, and the religion itself.

The use of the technical variations may be correct, the documents say, but "it may not be strategic for (U.S. government) officials to use the term." Terrorism Officials Advise Language Shift >>> | May 7, 2008

Organization of the Islamic Conference Tries to Rectify Image of Muslims. Sound Advice to the Oraganization: Quit Waging the Jihad!

TODAY’S ZAMAN: Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) Secretary-General Ekmeleddin İhsanoğlu has stated that a project called the Islamophobia Observatory has been launched in order to eliminate the worldwide waves of fear of Islam.

İhsanoğlu cited the commonsensical intellectual reaction of the Danish public following cartoons published in the country that were critical of Islam as one of the important successes of the project. "We presented a report on Islamophobia at the first summit we held with the CEOs and civil society organizations we are in touch with. It has sparked very positive reactions and spread across Europe in a short time. Publications have praised the initiative. We have seen both support of and opposition to the initiative, but [all in all] it has created very positive reactions," he said.

İhsanoğlu visited the Zaman Media Group on Thursday and briefed editors and columnists on OIC projects. Stating that the foremost target was to eradicate prejudice and fear of Islam, İhsanoğlu noted that there were groups in favor of the projects and also those disturbed by them. An OIC report on Islamophobia has seriously disconcerted Americans and Europeans, he said, adding: "The report has started to pay off. Let me give you an example: The cartoons published in Denmark and a short film, named 'Fitna' and released last month, if you look at the attitudes of the Danish prime minister, the media and civil society organizations, they are all very different from one another. So far, in these three-and-a-half years we have managed to get the UN General Assembly and Geneva make very important decisions. In the meantime the European group was left alone. We have gathered significant support from our own group in Asia, Africa and Latin America. A special rapporteur has been assigned [to track] the denigration and hatred campaigns against religions, and this person will write up reports on the issue." Algeria: Christian Sentenced for Carrying Bible

COMPASS DIRECT NEWS: Police pressure convert to return to Islam during ‘illegal’ five-day detention.

ALGIERS, Algeria, May 9 – An Algerian Christian detained five days for carrying a Bible and personal Bible study books was handed a 300-euro (US$460) fine and a one-year suspended prison sentence last week, an Algerian church leader said.

Last Tuesday (April 29) a court in Djilfa, 150 miles south of Algiers, charged the 33-year-old Muslim convert to Christianity with “printing, storing and distributing” illegal religious material. A written copy of the verdict has yet to be issued.

The Protestant, who requested anonymity for security reasons, told fellow Christians in his home city of Tiaret that police pressured him to return to Islam while in custody.

The conviction is the latest in a wave of detentions and court cases against Algeria’s Protestants and Catholics. Since January police and provincial officials have ordered the closure of up to half of the country’s 50 estimated Protestant congregations.

Officials in several instances have cited a February 2006 law governing the worship of non-Muslims. Clarified by subsequent decrees in 2007, the law restricts most religious meetings to approved places of worship and forbids any attempt to “shake the faith of a Muslim.” Algeria: Christian Sentenced for Carrying Bible >>> | May 10, 2008

Indonesia: Islamists Threaten to Tear Down Church

COMPASS DIRECT NEWS: JAKARTA, May 6 – Muslim extremists and local government authorities last week threatened to tear down a church building under construction in North Sumatra even though church leaders met requirements of Indonesia’s draconian law on worship places, the church’s pastor said.

Emboldened by local authorities’ unwillingness to grant a church building permit to Protestant Bataks Christian Church (Huria Kristen Batak Protesta, or HKBP), some 100 Muslim extremists accompanied by government officials on April 29 tried to destroy the building under construction in Jati Makmur village, North Binjai, 22 kilometers (14 miles) from the provincial capital of Medan.

The Rev. Monang Silaban, HKBP pastor, said about 100 members of the Islamic extremist Front Pembela Islam (Islamic Defender Front, or FPI), some armed with “sharp weapons,” arrived at 4:30 p.m. accompanied by Binjai municipal officials, who brought a bulldozer. Church members quickly gathered to defend the building, with women anxiously crying, “Please God protect us.”

The groups nearly came to blows in the rain as some Islamic extremists made their way into the structure, which was about 40 percent completed. Brigadir Mobil (Brimob) security forces and Binjai reserve police arrived and were able to bring calm, with the mob eventually calling off the assault.

Oil-Rich States Starve the World Food Program; Saudi Arabia Not Even on Donor List!

FOX NEWS: United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and his top lieutenants on Monday are convening the first meeting of the U.N.’s Task Force on the Global Food Crisis. Ban says it will “study the root causes of the crisis,” and propose solutions for “coordinated global action” at a summit of world leaders in June.

Ban might want to consider convincing the oil-rich nations of the Middle East to provide more than the near-invisible amount of money they currently give to the World Food Program (WFP), the U.N.’s food-giving arm, which is charged with alleviating the food crisis.

WFP internal documents show that the major oil producing nations of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) gives almost nothing to the food organization, even as skyrocketing oil prices and swollen oil revenues contribute to the very crisis that the U.N. claims could soon add 100 million more people to the world’s starving masses. Saudi Cash for Islamic Propaganda Keeps on Rolling into the West!

THE AUSTRALIAN: THE revelations over the past week that Griffith University aggressively pursued funds from the Saudi Arabian embassy to finance its Islamic studies unit illustrates a major problem facing all liberal democracies confronted with the vast reservoir of petro-dollars controlled by the Saudi Government.

"Saudi Arabia today remains the location where more money is going to terrorism, to Sunni terror groups and to the Taliban than any other place in the world," according to testimony given by Stuart Levey, the head of the US Treasury's Office of Terrorism and Financial Intelligence, at a US congressional hearing on April 1, 2008. This money is channelled through complex networks of private, government and charitable organisations.

Saudi Arabia also funds the ideological war within global Islam in support of Wahhabism, the sectarian and fundamentalist form of Islam that serves as the Saudi state religion.

Although a minority tendency within Islam, Wahhabism's enormous financial muscle allows it to overwhelm traditional forms of Islam. This is especially the case among the Muslim diaspora in Western countries, where petrodollars fund the educational, social and cultural infrastructure used to promote Wahhabism and related forms of Islamic fundamentalism.

The funding available for these activities is stupendous. One investigation estimated that the Saudi Government and related organisations spent $70 billion between 1979 and 2003 on "international aid", with two-thirds of this being used to infiltrate institutions and promote Wahhabism, and anti-Western, anti-Israeli propaganda.

Another reliable estimate indicates that by 2005 the Saudis had spent some $90 billion to export Wahhabism globally, or twice the estimated rate of $1 billion per annum spent by the Soviet Union on propaganda during the Cold War.

This campaign of "petro-Islamism" has hit Western societies hard and most remain off balance. Britain "is in denial, having allowed the country to turn into a global hub of the Islamic jihad", Melanie Phillips observed in Londonistan. And British courts are being used to suppress details of the complex mechanisms utilised by Saudi interests to fund extremist groups, with at least two books falling victim to Saudi legal action.

In Australia, Wahhabi influence is also expanding. The estimated $120million spent by Saudi Arabia since the 1970s has funded mosques, schools, paid imams, sponsored Australian teachers and clerics to train in Saudi Arabia; financed youth groups and camps; and provided literature, overseas speakers, videos and other propaganda. One notorious video featured an Arabic song used by al-Qa'ida to promote jihad which contains the lines "with the swords we shall exterminate the infidels and death is the desire of the pure". In another infamous incident in 2007 a sheik gave a lecture on the Rulings on Performing Jihad, telling his students that it was permissible to kill children in battle.

Petro-Islamism is also having a big impact in the higher education sector. As Walid Phares, an expert on global terrorism remarks in The War of Ideas (2007), globally, "a wave of oil funding hit university after university, college after college, and research centre after research centre. The objectives were fully ideological: further the cause of Islam, support the Palestinian cause, and plant the seeds of the concept of an illegitimate West."

In Britain, a report by Brunel University's Centre for Intelligence and Security Studies revealed that eight British universities, including Cambridge and Oxford, have accepted more than $491 million from Saudi and Muslim sources since 1995, mainly to fund Islamic study centres. Not surprisingly, the director-general of MI5 has warned that this funding had led to a "dangerous increase in the spread of extremism in leading university campuses".

In Australia, a Saudi plan for a $2.7 billion scholarship fund was revealed last year, apparently to facilitate the entry of Saudi university students into Australia in the face of restrictions on their entry into the US and Britain. Hezbollah Takes Over West Beirut

BBC: Gunmen from the Shia militant group Hezbollah have seized most of western Beirut, driving out supporters of the Western-backed government.

The gunmen, who also back Hezbollah's Shia opposition allies, have forced the closure of pro-government media.

The opposition said it would maintain roadblocks around Beirut until there was a solution to the political crisis.

At least 11 people, mainly civilians, have been killed and dozens injured in the city in three days of clashes.

The fighting was sparked by a government move on Monday to shut down Hezbollah's telecoms network.

Police Bid to Tackle Islamophobia

BBC: Scotland's first Muslim Police Association is being created in an attempt to encourage more Muslims to join and stay in the force.

Strathclyde Police hopes the group will also help tackle Islamophobia and improve understanding of Islam.

Pc Amar Shakoor, who was Scotland's first Muslim officer, said negativity had recently been directed towards the Muslim community.

He said the association hoped to put Islam in a more positive light.

"We want to highlight some of the positive things Islam can provide to the communities and not just the police services," he said.

According to Pc Shakoor, since the 9/11 World Trade Centre Attack, London tube bombings and Glasgow Airport attempted bombings, Muslims have faced suspicion and increasing scrutiny.

He said links were now more important than ever and one of the best ways to do this was to recruit more Muslim officers.

Strathclyde Police, which has more than 7,000 officers, has only about 31 Muslim officers among its ranks.

Earlier this year, Chief Constable Steve House met Muslim officers in England who had started a similar group. It has been quite successful, not only within the Muslim community, but also in tackling institutional issues within their own police forces.
