Germany's Culture of Remembrance | DW Documentary

Aug 5, 2024 | Amid far-right populism and growing support for the AfD, what can Germany do to ensure the atrocities of its history are never forgotten or repeated?

In recent decades Germany has worked to build a culture of remembrance that includes coming to terms with difficult chapters in its history, such as German colonial genocide and the Nazi dictatorship. Remembrance of Nazi crimes and commemoration of the victims should help ensure that these atrocities are never repeated. But increased far-right populism and growing support for the AfD party are a serious cause for concern. What can be done to keep awareness of Nazi crimes and the Holocaust alive in Germany, to prevent people playing down this terrible chapter in its history, and to convey its significance to the younger generation?

Nicolás Maduro Vows to ‘Pulverise’ Challenge to His Rule after Disputed Venezuela Election

THE GUARDIAN: Maduro told troops he is ‘willing to do anything’ to protect his ‘revolution’ amid growing criticism of crackdown on opposition

The Venezuelan strongman Nicolás Maduro has vowed to “pulverise” the latest challenge to his rule and told troops he is “willing to do anything” to protect his “revolution” amid growing criticism of the crackdown that followed last week’s disputed election.

Maduro says more than 2,000 people have been arrested in the days since the 28 July vote while human rights groups say at least 22 people have been killed.

On Sunday, the EU said it was “seriously concerned” about the growing number of arbitrary detentions in Venezuela and the harassment of the opposition, which has produced evidence suggesting its candidate, Edmundo González, won the election.

“The European Union calls on Venezuelan authorities to put an end to arbitrary detentions, repression and violent rhetoric against members of the opposition and civil society, and to release all political prisoners,” the EU’s foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, said in a statement. » | Tom Phillips in Caracas | Monday, August 5, 2024

Global Markets Jolted by Signs of U.S. Economy Slowing

THE NEW YORK TIMES: U.S. stocks fell sharply, after markets recorded heavy declines in Asia and Europe.

A wave of panic rippled through financial markets on Monday, with stocks falling sharply in the United States and around the world as investors zeroed in on signs of a slowing American economy.

Monday’s drop extended a sell-off that had begun last week, after the U.S. jobs report on Friday that showed significantly slower hiring, with unemployment rising to its highest level in nearly three years. This deepened fears that the world’s largest economy could be sliding into a recession and that the Federal Reserve may have waited too long to cut interest rates.

The drop was exacerbated by other factors — concerns that technology stocks had run up too far too fast, and that a suddenly strengthening yen would hurt the prospects of Japanese companies and some global traders — both hit markets too. » | The New York Times | Monday, August 5, 2024

How Recent ‘Xenophobic’ Riots Compare to 2011 ‘Anti-police’ London Looting

Aug 5, 2024 | “There’s a common process here, which is people who get involved in these events think that other people support them.” Rioters “feel empowered” when they loot and cause violence because they “don’t feel alone” at a large demonstration, says social psychologist John Drury.

Both Islamophobia and Islamism are nonsense terms. A phobia is an irrational fear. There is nothing irrational about fearing Islam, a religion which has the goal of domination. And as for Islamism, there is no such thing. The concept of Islamism has been made up by Westerners to create a distance between Islam, the religion, and Islamism, or political Islam. Only someone who is totally ignorant of Islam would make such a distinction. The fact of the matter is this, and it is clear: Islam is political. Islam recognises no separation of mosque and state, no separation of the temporal from the spiritual. Truth to tell, an Islamist is a fully-practising Muslim. He is carrying out his faith as it is supposed to be carried out.

Here's the thing: Western values and Islamic values are totally and utterly immiscible. A state cannot successfully pursue policies of equal rights for all when Islam is in the mix. Does anyone seriously believe that Muslims will ever accept rights for gays? Or ever accept that women are equal to men?

Neither this government under Keir Starmer, nor any other government under some other leader, be he Labour or Conservative, is ever going to solve this problem — and it is truly a HUGE problem to solve — unless and until the facts mentioned above are fully understood. Government policies must be based on understanding the true nature of Islam.

My greatest fear is that these riots, in the long-run, will only get worse if PROPER SOLUTIONS to the problem are not found. Band aids just will not do. – © Mark Alexander

Wie krank ist Homo-Heilung? | Doku HD Reupload | ARTE

Prime Minister Condemns ‘Far-Right Thuggery’ as Riots Grip U.K.

THE NEW YORK TIMES: Protests escalated over the weekend in towns and cities in England and Northern Ireland, with dozens arrested and more demonstrations unfolding on Sunday.

Anti-immigration rioters attacked a hotel in the town of Rotherham in northern England on Sunday, breaking windows and appearing to set fires at a hotel that has housed asylum seekers, as riots continued in Britain.

The police in cities across the country have braced for continued far-right and anti-immigration protests spurred by a deadly stabbing attack last week in the northern English town of Southport. Disinformation spread rapidly that erroneously claimed the suspect in the knife attack was an immigrant. On Saturday, dozens of people were arrested as demonstrations from Liverpool to Belfast descended into violence.

Sunday saw a new wave of clashes, with groups gathering in Rotherham, Bolton, Hull, Southport, Middlesbrough and other towns and cities scattered across the country that devolved into varying degrees of violence.

In Rotherham, protesters smashed windows and set fires at a Holiday Inn Express before storming into the building as riot police officers struggled to control the rampaging crowd. The hotel had been used to house asylum seekers, but it was unclear if they were still staying at the site. » | Ali Watkins and Megan Specia | Sunday, August 4, 2024

Global Stock Markets Sink On US Economy Fears

BBC: Stock markets across Europe and Asia tumbled on Monday, spooked by fears that the US economy is heading for a slowdown.

In London, the FTSE 100 index opened 2.3% lower while the Euronext 100 tumbled by 3.5%.

They followed sharp falls across Asia with Japan's Nikkei 225 dropping 12.4% or 4,451 points in the biggest fall by points in history.

It follows weak jobs data in the US on Friday which sparked concerns about the world's largest economy.

Meanwhile, the yen has been strengthening against the US dollar since the Bank of Japan raised interest rates last week, making stocks in Tokyo more expensive for foreign investors.

At Least 70 Dead as Bangladesh Protests Grow; Curfew Is Reinstated

THE NEW YORK TIMES: Expanded student protests this weekend, after more than 200 people were killed in a government crackdown in July, have plunged the country into a particularly dangerous phase.

At least 70 people were killed in clashes between security forces and protesters on Sunday in Bangladesh, as the country’s leaders imposed a new curfew and internet restrictions to try to quell a growing antigovernment movement.

The revival of student protests after a deadly government crackdown late last month, as well as a call by the governing party for its own supporters to take to the streets, has plunged the country of over 170 million into a particularly dangerous phase.

The exact number of deaths in the violence on Sunday was unclear, but it appeared to be the deadliest day since the protests began in July. A diplomatic official in Dhaka, the capital, said the toll across Bangladesh was at least 72, while tallies by local news media and the protest coordinators put the count at anywhere from 70 to 93. At least 13 of the dead were police officers, the country’s Police Headquarters said in a statement.

Sunday’s toll added to the more than 200 people killed in the crackdown on protesters last month by security forces under Bangladesh’s increasingly authoritarian leader, Sheikh Hasina. In a sign of the risk of further violence, the protest coordinators said they would march toward Ms. Hasina’s official residence on Monday. » | Saif Hasnat and Mujib Mashal | Saif Hasnat reported from Dhaka, Bangladesh, and Mujib Mashal from New Delhi. | Sunday, August 4, 2024
