Februar 2011

THE SYDNEY MORNING HERALD: Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi's invitation to hundreds of young women to convert to Islam overshadowed a two-day visit to Italy intended to cement the growing ties between Tripoli and Rome.
Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi hailed Italy's relationship with Libya at an evening ceremony on Monday attended by some of the biggest names in Italian business, many hoping to pick up lucrative contracts in the energy-rich North African state.
Gaddafi called on the European Union to provide five billion euro ($7.1 billion) a year to help fight illegal immigration.
However, the mercurial leader attracted most attention earlier in the day by summoning busloads of young women hired by a hostessing agency to a meeting at a Libyan cultural centre near the Vatican and urging them to convert to Islam.
Media reports said three women had converted, although it was not possible to verify if that was true.
"It was very interesting, the role of the woman in Libya was very interesting," Barbara Persichetti, one of the women who attended, told Reuters Television.
The event, which repeated a similar operation on a previous visit to Rome last year, led to criticism from the media and opposition and embarrassment from many in Berlusconi's own centre-right camp.
"What would happen if a European head of state went to Libya or another Islamic country and invited everyone to convert to Christianity?" asked the newspaper Il Messagero. "We believe it would provoke very strong reactions across the Islamic world."
Several commentators accused Berlusconi of sacrificing principles and dignity for the sake of trade and investment ties with Libya, whose huge sovereign wealth fund has invested heavily in Italy in recent years.
"Ever since Gaddafi arrived here, he's been taking this country for a ride, like buying women," said Stefano Pedica, a senator from the opposition Italy of Values party. ”Outdated Ideas” >>> Reuters | Tuesday, August 31, 2010

THE JERUSALEM POST: Teheran summons Italian envoy; protests also held outside French, Dutch embassies.
About 100 Iranians protested Tuesday in front of the Italian embassy in Teheran, shouting "Death to Italy, Death to Berlusconi, " Italy's foreign minister said. Protests were also held outside the French and Dutch embassies.
The protests came a week after Premier Silvio Berlusconi announced — in Israel — that Italy was scaling back its economic dealings with Iran and wanted tighter sanctions against the Teheran leadership. Italy has long been Teheran's biggest trading partner in the EU.
Television footage of the protests shown on Sky TG 24 showed protesters throwing stones and eggs at the Italian embassy. Foreign Ministry officials said none of the protesters managed to get inside and that police intervened.
Frattini told the Senate that the protest was "hostile" and that the group tried to assault the building. >>> Associated Press | Tuesday, February 09, 2010
>>> Ag. | Dienstag, 09. Februar 2010

MAIL ONLINE: Microsoft founder Bill Gates has launched a scathing attack on Silvio Berlusconi, accusing the Italian Prime Minister of spending more on his thinning hair than he does on foreign aid.
Billionaire Mr Gates hit out at Mr Berlusconi's 'stinginess' and said the controversial politican was the main figure on his 'list of shame'.
And, in a clear reference to Mr Berlusconi's hair transplant, he told German daily Sueddeut[s]che Zeitung that 'rich people spend a lot more on personal problems like baldness than they do to combat malaria'.

DAILY EXPRESS: Italy’s bungling prime minister caused embarrassment last night when he complimented US President-elect Barack Obama on his “suntan”.
Silvio Berlusconi praised America’s first black president for being “young, handsome and tanned”.
Last night Mr Berlusconi, 72 – no stranger himself to a year-round suntan – was condemned for his remarks.
But he hit back at critics, saying: “What’s the problem? It was a compliment. If these people don’t have a sense of humour why don’t they just...”
Italian opposition MP Dario Franceschini said Mr Berlusconi’s remarks were “loaded with dangerous ambiguity”, adding: “They will be seen as offensive by the whole world.”
Mr Berlusconi has made regular gaffes, including labelling one German MEP a “prisoner of war camp guard” and saying that the West was “superior to Islam”. >>> By Nick Pisa | November 7, 2008
SPIEGELONLINE INTERNATIONAL: Austrian Journalist Slammed For Racist Obama Rant
Veteran Austrian television personality Klaus Emmerich has triggered a storm of criticism for his racist comments about Barack Obama, the US president-elect.
Klaus Emmerich has long been a figure in Austrian television news. His journalism career spans 61 years and includes a stint as a correspondent in Washington D.C. for ORF, Austria's public television station. He is something like the Wolf Blitzer of Austria.
Or, at least, he was. Now, the respected US expert has stained his own report card with a string of blatantly racist remarks regarding the election of Barack Obama in the US. Speaking on a talk show on the Austrian public channel ORF on Wednesday, he said: "I wouldn't want the Western world to be directed by a black man. When you say that is a racist remark: right, without a doubt."
Americans are "racists, now as before, and it must be going very badly for them that they so convincingly ... send a black man, and a black, very good-looking woman, into the White House," he said. >>> jas -- with wire reports | November 7, 2008
THE TELEGRAPH: Barack Obama ‘Not Civilised’ Enough to Rule, Says Austrian Pundit
The Austrian state broadcaster is refusing to sack its top US political commentator despite him claiming blacks were 'not civilised' enough to rule.
Klaus Emmerich, who until he retired was editor in chief of the Austrian broadcaster ORF's news and current affairs service, is a specialist in American politics and is still the station's top political commentator for US affairs.
But in coverage of the election in which Barack Obama was elected president he said: "I do not want the western world being directed by a black man. And if you say this is a racist remark, I say you are damn right it is."
Emmerich also said Obama's election was "a highly disturbing development" because "blacks are not as far advanced in the civilization process nor in their political progress." >>> | November 7, 2008
MAIL Online: New Obama Race Row as Austrian TV Pundit Says Black People ‘Are Not Civilised’ Enough to Rule
Austria's official state broadcaster is refusing to sack a senior political commentator who said blacks were not civilised enough to rule.
Klaus Emmerich, the retired editor-in-chief of Austrian broadcaster ORF's news and current affairs service, is the station's top political commentator for U.S. affairs. Der Spiegel likened him to Wolf Blitzer, CNN's legendary political commentator.
But covering the election in which Barack Obama was elected American president, Emmerich said: 'I do not want the western world being directed by a black man. And if you say this is a racist remark, I say you are damn right it is.'
Emmerich also said Obama's election was "a highly disturbing development" because "blacks are not as far advanced in the civilisation process nor in their political progress."
Following his outburst, the moderator prevented Emmerich from speaking again.
But Emmerich took an even harder line in newspaper interviews later, calling Mr Obama's victory 'a highly disturbing development' because 'blacks are not as far advanced in the civilisation process nor in their political progress'.
He went on to tell Die Presse that Mr Obama has 'a devil-like talent to present his rhetoric so effectively'. >>> | November 7, 2008
BBC: Berlusconi Says Obama Is ‘Tanned’
Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has provoked criticism for describing Barack Obama as "young, handsome, and tanned".
He made the remarks after a meeting with the Russian president in Moscow.
Opposition politicians in Italy said Mr Berlusconi's remarks about the US president-elect were at worst, racist and at best, undiplomatic.
Mr Berlusconi shrugged off the criticism, saying those who disagreed with him were humourless "imbeciles".
'Great compliment'
Mr Berlusconi made the quip at a news conference with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.
''Obama is young, handsome and also tanned, so he has all the qualities to agree with you,'' he told the Russian leader, speaking in Italian through a translator.
he Italian news agency Ansa said Mr Berlusconi later defended the remark, calling it "a great compliment".
Responding to a reporter's suggestion that the remark might be misunderstood, he accused his opponents of not having a sense of humour.
''God save us from imbeciles,'' he added. >>> | November 7, 2008
>>> sk | 7. November 2008

THE GUARDIAN: ROME - Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi attacked the European Union on Thursday, saying it had lost influence on the world stage and its leaders were weaker than when he was last in office two years ago.
Speaking before an EU summit in Brussels, Berlusconi also criticised European Commissioners for speaking out publicly and creating problems for national governments, and said he would demand a more reserved approach from now on.
"I see a Europe which has gone backwards compared with two years ago," Berlusconi, who became prime minister for the third time following an April election victory, told a business conference in Rome.
He said Europe's current leaders had "less personality" than those attending summits when he was last in office, citing Tony Blair, Jose Maria Aznar, Gerhard Schroeder and Jacques Chirac, the former leaders of Britain, Spain, Germany and France.
"The EU appears as an institution that intervenes with obligations and restrictions," Berlusconi said in his latest broadside against the institutions of the 27-nation bloc. "It is not a protagonist on the world stage."
On Wednesday he blasted the EU for having done "absolutely nothing to stop the hypervaluation of the euro", and promised that he would use the EU summit to make the area "less bureaucratic and less distant from citizens". EU losing World Role, Has Weaker Leaders-Italy PM >>> Reuters | June 19, 2008

BBC: Veteran centre-right leader Silvio Berlusconi, 71, has a narrow lead in Italy's general election, exit polls suggest.
Mr Berlusconi, a billionaire, is bidding for a third term in office. His main rival is centre-left leader Walter Veltroni, formerly Rome mayor.
Exit polls showed Mr Berlusconi's bloc about 2% ahead for both houses.
The election was held three years ahead of schedule, following the collapse of Romano Prodi's centre-left coalition.
Correspondents caution that it is too early to predict a winner with any certainty.
The new government will be Italy's 62nd since World War II.
Tricky coalition talks are expected in the coming days. The next government faces the task of reviving Italy's ailing economy. Zero growth is forecast for the coming year. [Source: Exit Polls Place Berlusconi Ahead] | April 14, 2008

INTERNATIONAL HERALD TRIBUNE: ROME: Former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi received an Islamist death threat Friday in a letter containing two bullets that was sent to a newspaper owned by his family's media empire.
The blank cartridges were "a forewarning" to Berlusconi and his younger brother Paolo, the publisher of Il Giornale, for the Milanese newspaper's "anti-Islamic" stance, according to the paper's Web site, which published the letter.
The letter warned that "at the first favorable moment" the Berlusconi brothers would come to the same end as Benazir Bhutto, the Pakistani opposition leader, who was assassinated Dec. 27.
"We will do like they did in Pakistan, with Bhutto: a shot to the head with real bullets and then an Italian-style suicide bomber to make sure that they depart this world," the letter read.
"Bodyguards and security details will be unable to stop us, because we are unpredictable," said the letter. Berlusconi is target of Islamist death threat >>> By Elisabetta Povoledo
