Oil Price Expected to Surge after Iran Strikes and Strait of Hormuz Closure

THE GUARDIAN: Stock markets around the world could tumble on Monday and motorists are likely to pay more at the pump

The price of oil is expected to soar on Monday as the US-Israel war on Iran and the effective closure of the crucial strait of Hormuz rattles investors despite major producers’ pledges to increase its output.

US crude is on track to rise by 11% when trading resumes, according to data from the broker IG. The jump comes as Opec+, the cartel of oil producers, agreed on Sunday to step up its output by more than expected as it assessed the impact of the conflict.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards reportedly told ships on Saturday that passage through the strait of Hormuz was prohibited, in effect shutting the key choke point and prompting the halt of some oil shipments.

About $500bn (£372bn) of energy trade and 20% of global oil supplies pass through the strait each year. Vessels also carry chemicals and fertilisers, meaning disruption could affect agriculture and global food prices. » | Graeme Wearden and Mark Sweney | Sunday, March 1, 2026

« Soudain, je me suis sentie libérée.

Democracy Now! Special Report: U.S. & Israel Launch Unprovoked Attack on Iran, Risking Broader Regional War

Feb 28, 2026 | The U.S. and Israel have launched an unprovoked attack on Iran striking sites across the country, including the compound of Iran's Supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Both Israel and the U.S. say Khamenei was killed. Iranian state media also reports one Israeli strike hit an elementary girls’ school in Minab, killing at least 85 people including scores of children. Iran has responded by launching attacks across the Middle East targeting Israel and U.S. military installations in the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Jordan.

Feb 28, 2026 | In an explosive interview with NDTV, renowned economist and geopolitical commentator Jeffrey Sachs, Professor at Columbia University, delivers a blistering critique of the US–Israel military strikes on Iran.

Professor Sachs argues that the attacks have nothing to do with nuclear threats, calling them instead an imperial war aimed at sustaining US–Israeli hegemony and controlling Middle Eastern oil. He accuses Donald Trump of acting at the behest of Benjamin Netanyahu, warning that the world is being pushed toward a wider global conflict.

Iran Vows to Avenge Leader’s Death as Strikes Continue

THE NEW YORK TIMES: U.S. and Israeli attacks entered a second day as Iran’s surviving leadership said the old guard would remain in control.

The Iranian government vowed on Sunday that it would retaliate for the attacks that killed Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s longtime supreme leader and an implacable enemy of Israel and the United States, as attacks on the country entered a second day.

The Iranian state news agency confirmed the ayatollah’s death on Sunday morning, and the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps — a powerful institution answering to the supreme leader — said that Iran would avenge him. Ali Larijani, a senior leader and Khamenei confidant, vowed that Iranian forces would fight even harder.

The ayatollah’s death prompted a range of reactions within Iran on Saturday. Large crowds poured into the streets of Tehran and other cities to celebrate the toppling of a leader who had ruled with an iron fist for nearly 37 years. Others mourned him.

The killing is a seismic political shift that raises the prospect of chaos and a power vacuum in an already turbulent region.

The United States and Israel said overnight that they were still attacking Iran. President Trump said on social media that U.S. strikes would continue “throughout the week or, as long as necessary to achieve our objective of PEACE THROUGHOUT THE MIDDLE EAST AND, INDEED, THE WORLD!” Live Updates » | Farnaz Fassihi, Ronen Bergman, Zolan Kanno-Youngs and Aaron Boxerman | Sunday, March 1, 2026

St. David's Day, the National Day of Wales: Daffodils – William Wordsworth (An Inspirational Poem)

Jun 20, 2020 | A powerful poem on finding pleasure and comfort in nature.

Read by Victor Vertunni

William Wordsworth was a revered English poet who was, in part, responsible for kick-starting the Romantic movement in English literature.

Inspired after finding a surprising number of daffodils during a countryside walk, Daffodils (or 'I Wondered Lonely as a Cloud') serves as something of a reminder that humanity is a part of nature and not an opposing force.

The President of War

THE NEW YORK TIMES — OPINION: The U.S. military was once a tool of last resort for American presidents.

The tough decision to deploy armed troops for conflict in another country came after diplomacy, political pressure and other peaceful options were exhausted. This clearly doesn’t hold true in the second Trump administration.

In a short video posted on Saturday morning, President Trump stood in a darkened room at a lectern in a white “U.S.A.” hat and announced that the United States military had begun “major combat operations in Iran” and called for the overthrow of its government. He warned that this could be a costly fight, and that American lives could be lost.

In his attempt to project power to all corners of the globe during his second term, Mr. Trump has routinely relied on both the threat and the use of military action to coerce opponents and allies alike into giving him what he wants. Warnings of American military involvement — traditionally viewed by commanders in chief as “break glass in case of emergency” — have now become a weekly, if not daily, occurrence.

The world has watched Mr. Trump launch military operations in Iran, Yemen, Somalia, Nigeria, Iraq and Syria; capture and remove Venezuela’s leader, Nicolás Maduro, from power; threaten to use military force to take control of Greenland; pressure Mexico to allow U.S. troops in the country to target fentanyl labs; and direct an air campaign to kill suspected drug smugglers at sea. » | W.J. Trump Leads U.S. into War with Iran

Feb 28, 2026 | Donald Trump has launched major combat operations against Iran — without Congressional approval, without UN authorization, and without a clear endgame. In coordination with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the U.S. has escalated the conflict into a full-scale regional war that is already spreading across the Middle East. Iran has retaliated with missile strikes on U.S. bases in Qatar, the UAE, and Bahrain, while explosions have rocked cities across the Gulf. Oil markets are on edge. American forces are on high alert. And the world is bracing for what could become the most dangerous escalation since the Iraq War.

What We Know So Far: Supreme Leader's Compound Hit and Iran's Retaliatory Strikes

BBC: The US and Israel have launched a large-scale attack on Iran.

President Donald Trump said the US had begun "major combat operations" and urged Iranians to overthrow their clerical rulers once they were complete.

Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz earlier announced that Israel had launched a "pre-emptive attack" against Iran to remove threats to the country.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the strikes were "wholly unprovoked, illegal, and illegitimate".

His country responded by launching missiles towards Israel and four Gulf Arab countries which host US military bases: Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar and the UAE.

It came after weeks of threats from Trump that he would order military action if Iran did not agree a new deal over its nuclear programme.

Donald Trump has called for regime change in Iran after the US launched “major combat operations” against the Islamic Republic.

The US president said American forces were “undertaking a massive and ongoing operation to prevent this very wicked, radical dictatorship from threatening America and our core national security interests”.

“We are going to destroy their missiles and raze their missile industry to the ground,” he added in his address from his Mar-a-Lago resort.

Iran Launches Retaliatory Strikes at Targets across Middle East

BBC: Iranian forces say they have struck a US naval base in Bahrain, as Iran launched strikes across the region in retaliation for a "massive" and ongoing attack against it by the US and Israel.

Huge plumes of black smoke were seen rising from an area near the headquarters of the US Navy's Fifth Fleet in Manama, Bahrain. The extent of any damage is unclear and the US has not commented.

Elsewhere across the region, explosions have been heard in the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Kuwait - also homes to US military bases.

U.S. Attacks Iran as Trump Calls for Overthrow of Government

THE NEW YORK TIMES: Explosions resounded in Tehran as President Trump said that the United States had begun a large assault. Air-raid sirens blared in Israel, which also said it was striking Iran.

President Trump announced on Saturday that the United States had launched a major attack on Iran, vowing to devastate the country’s military, eliminate its nuclear program and bring about a change in its government.

Massive explosions resounded in the Iranian capital, Tehran, where residents reported seeing smoke rising from the district that includes the presidential palace and the National Security Council.

The region was broadly on edge over the potential scope of retaliation from the attack, jointly coordinated with Israel. Iran fired missiles at Israel, prompting huge booms overhead as Israeli air defenses sought to intercept them. Air raid sirens blared in Bahrain where there are American bases, while the U.S. embassies in Jordan, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates directed all staff to shelter-in-place and recommended that all Americans in those countries do the same.

The American-led campaign’s scope went well beyond the attack against Iran’s nuclear program last year that Mr. Trump oversaw. This time, Mr. Trump vowed “to raze their missile industry to the ground” and “annihilate their navy,” arguing that Iran had refused to reach a deal with the United States that would have averted war.

He then called on Iranians to overthrow their government when the U.S. military assault came to an end. “It will be yours to take,” he said. “This will be probably your only chance for generations.” Live Updates » | Aaron Boxerman, Tyler Pager, Farnaz Fassihi and Ronen Bergman | Saturday, February 28, 2026
