Nov 28, 2025 | One of the two members of the National Guard that were shot in Washington DC on Wednesday has died, US President Donald Trump said. Sarah Beckstrom, 20, died from her injuries, President Trump said on Thursday.
The second National Guard member that was shot is 24-year-old Andrew Wolfe. He remains in critical condition, officials said on Thursday morning. Both were shot at close range near Farragut Square in downtown on Wednesday.
Police arrested one suspect in the shooting, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, a 29-year-old from Afghanistan.

US Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro said the suspect, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, drove thousands of miles across the country from Washington state before the attack on Wednesday.
Lakanwal was shot by another soldier during the incident and was taken to hospital. US President Donald Trump said he was "severely wounded".

President Trump on Wednesday called for a crackdown on immigration and ordered 500 more troops to Washington after the shooting of two National Guard members patrolling the capital and the identification of an Afghan national as the suspect.
Mr. Trump posted a video shortly after 9 p.m. from Palm Beach, Fla., where he is spending Thanksgiving, describing the shooting as an “act of terror” and “a crime against humanity.” He called the suspect, whom people familiar with the investigation identified as Rahmanullah Lakanwal, 29, an “animal” who shot the guard members “at point-blank range in a monstrous, ambush-style attack just steps away from the White House.”
Although many details about the shooting were still unknown by nightfall on Wednesday, Mr. Trump did not hold back. He used the attack to launch a broadside against immigration, saying the shooting “underscores the single greatest national security threat facing our nation” and vowing to redouble his mass deportation efforts.

Stephen K. Bannon, the pro-Trump podcaster and convicted fraudster who briefly served as President Trump’s White House chief strategist in his first term, publicly threw his support behind the president’s talk of seeking a third term, in defiance of a constitutionally mandated two-term limit.
In an interview with The Economist, Mr. Bannon vaguely asserted that there was “a plan” to circumvent the 22nd Amendment, which states that “no person shall be elected to the office of the president more than twice,” regardless of whether the terms are consecutive. He also suggested that he was part of a team developing that plan.
“Trump is going to be president in ’28, and people ought to just get accommodated with that,” he said.
“At the appropriate time, we’ll lay out what the plan is,” said Mr. Bannon, without elaborating. “But there is a plan.” He added that Mr. Trump was an “instrument of divine will,” echoing, as Mr. Trump himself has, the language of the divine right of kings.
Mr. Bannon’s statement comes after months of Mr. Trump publicly toying with the idea of running for a third term. Even as the president insists he is serious, some Republican leaders have dismissed the idea as a joke, noting that the Constitution does not permit it.
