Viktor Orban’s ‘Propaganda State’ Is Starting to Show Cracks

THE NEW YORK TIMES: The Hungarian leader has secured power by keeping control over the news media. Now, a political opponent is starting to show the limits of his tactics.

Prime Minister Viktor Orban of Hungary has long been hailed as a model by right-wing politicians in the United States and Europe, lauded for a string of election victories and his crackdowns on migrants and on activists pushing progressive social issues.

“It’s nice to have a strong man running your country,” President Trump said last year of Mr. Orban, who has been in power for 15 years.

Mr. Orban’s strength, reinforced by a sprawling propaganda machine geared to the destruction of his opponents, has seen off would-be rivals on both the left and the right in four consecutive elections.

Now for the first time, however, he is struggling to land a knockout blow on his enemies.

His most potent current rival, Peter Magyar, a former loyalist who heads a surging opposition movement, has in recent months been savaged by media controlled by Mr. Orban’s Fidesz party as an abusive husband, a traitor, a crook and a sex pest.

The nonstop vilification — described by Mr. Magyar as a “tsunami of lies” — has been surprising in only one respect: It has not worked. » | Andrew Higgins | Reporting from Budapest and Hodmezovasarhely, Hungary | Sunday, October 12, 2025

France Is Not Alone in Its Crisis of Political Faith – Belief in a Democratic World Is Vanishing

THE GUARDIAN — OPINION: The populist right offers a solution in the form of turning back the clock. Macron and his counterparts need to find a different answer fast

Emmanuel Macron sounded like a man in grief. Not angry, not defiant, just a little triste. Europe, he lamented, was suffering a “degeneration of democracy”. Many threats emanated from outside, from Russia, from China, from powerful US tech companies and social-media entrepreneurs, France’s president said. “But we should not be naive. On the inside we are turning on ourselves. We doubt our own democracy … We see everywhere that something is happening to our democratic fabric. Democratic debate is turning into a debate of hatred.”

Squeezed between vituperative extremes of right and left, Macron knows of what he speaks. But “ungovernable” France is not alone in its bitter, intractable divisions. Across Europe, in the UK and the US, distrust and grievance daily deepen political dysfunction and social discord. Macron’s words apply, in fact, to almost any country espousing democratic principles. Belief that democracy is the form of governance best suited to the modern world is dwindling, especially among younger people. Meanwhile, the public space grows coarser and more violent. Macron was speaking at an event marking the 35th anniversary of Germany’s 1990 reunification, a moment of great optimism. Yet, like France, today’s polarised Germany faces an acute crisis of political faith. » | Simon Tisdall | Sunday, October 12, 2025

European Far Right Follows Trump in Calling for Antifa to Be Declared Terrorists

THE GUARDIAN: Netherlands and Hungary move towards designation as draft resolution reportedly backed by 79 MEPs in 20 countries

Where Donald Trump leads, Europe’s nationalists and far right follow. After a Truth Social post last month, when Trump announced the US would designate antifa, the decentralised anti-fascist movement, “a major terrorist organisation”, his international allies swung into action.

That same day, the Dutch parliament, where the largest party is Geert Wilders’ far-right PVV, passed a resolution, noting the US decision and calling on the government to declare antifa a terrorist organisation in the Netherlands.

Then the Hungarian prime minister, Viktor Orbán – more usually a source of inspiration for Trump – said his country would follow suit. Next, in the European parliament, a far-right MEP from the Flemish nationalist Vlaams Belang party drafted a resolution with the same request. Tom Vandendriessche announced last week that 79 MEPs from 20 countries supported his proposed text. In a video posted on X with ominous music playing, he described antifa as “an international network that is supported, financed and protected by the system to fight the nationalist opposition with violence”. » | Jennifer Rankin in Brussels | Sunday, October 12, 2025

Trump’s cancer is metastasizing rapidly, isn’t it? It will soon choke off freedom of speech and, by extension, freedom of thought! Without freedom of speech, freedom of thought is unthinkable. It is such a pity that Americans hadn’t the courage to lock up Trump when they had the chance to do so. Now, the West will have to pay the high price for their weakness and cowardice. Trumpism has already FU America, and now it is on course to FU the rest of the West as well! As an aside, I am sure that Winnie must be turning in his grave to learn that he was the Arch-Antifan! A message to all SANE folks! We are in the fight of our lives! Moreover, this could be the spark that sets off World War III! It’s going to be a battle for the soul of the western world. — © Mark Alexander

A North Korean Family's Life 10 Years after Their Escape | BBC News

Oct 10, 2025 | A decade ago, BBC journalist Danny Vincent documented a North Korean family’s 3,000-kilometre journey to freedom. If caught, they faced almost certain death. They risked all to be reunited with their loved ones in the South.

Today, the number of North Korean defectors escaping the country has dropped dramatically. Escapees speak of increased ideological control and a shoot to kill policy at the border.

Ten years on, we go back to meet the Park family as they retell the story of their daring escape and their new life in South Korea.

The film has some scenes some viewers may find upsetting.

Hamas Mobilises Fighters in Gaza as Fears of Internal Violence Mount | BBC News

Oct 11, 2025 | Hamas has recalled about 7,000 members of its security forces to reassert control over areas of Gaza recently vacated by Israeli troops, according to local sources.

The mobilisation order was reportedly issued via phone calls and text messages which said the aim was to "cleanse Gaza of outlaws and collaborators with Israel" and told fighters to report within 24 hours.

Reports from Gaza suggest that armed Hamas units have already deployed across several districts, some wearing civilian clothes and others in the blue uniforms of the Gaza police.

It comes as a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas enters its second day, and currently seems to be holding.
