Europe Needs to ‘Get Serious’ about Threat Posed to It by Russia, Ukraine Minister Says

THE GUARDIAN: Sergiy Kyslytsya says Kremlin already at war with Europe and predicts that Vladimir Putin will ‘escalate escalating’

Europe needs to “get serious” about the existential threat posed to it by Russia, Ukraine’s deputy foreign minister has said, warning that Vladimir Putin will “escalate escalating”.

In an interview with the Guardian, Sergiy Kyslytsya – Kyiv’s former ambassador to the UN – said the Kremlin was already at war with Europe. He said Russia’s recent drone incursions against several EU countries were well-calculated and an attempt to “move the red lines”.

“I’m sure Putin gets emotional if not physical satisfaction humiliating the west by showing what he perceives as his super-strength,” Kyslytsya said, adding that the Russian president’s reckless actions risked antagonising a White House that appeared to be cooling on him. “It’s a boomerang thing,” Kyslytsya said.

What Russia does next depends on whether Europe and the Trump administration show collective resolve, he suggested. Without a decisive transatlantic response, Putin would “escalate escalating”, he predicted, with more actions designed to disrupt and paralyse the continent. » | Luke Harding in Kyiv | Saturday, October 4, 2025

Trump Tells Military to Use American Cities as "Training Grounds"

Oct 1, 2025 | In a deranged, demeaning, and dangerous speech to our nation's military leadership - officer and enlisted alike - Pete Hegseth and Donald Trump may have thought they could inspire the men and women of the military to switch their loyalties from the Constitution to a tyrant. They were dead wrong.

The danger and dementia of Donald Trump was on full display as he addressed the leadership of America's armed forces. Trump tried to pit the military against the citizenry by saying the military should focus on "the enemy within." And he told them that they should use American cities as military "training grounds."

If there was any lingering question about Trump unfitness to be commander in chief of the armed forces, he cleared that up with a speech that was as un-American as it was dangerous, as this video discusses.

U.S. Military Attacked Boat Off Venezuela, Killing Four Men, Hegseth Says

THE NEW YORK TIMES: It was the fourth strike in the Trump administration’s legally disputed campaign targeting suspected drug runners in the Caribbean Sea.

The U.S. military killed four men aboard a boat in international waters near Venezuela, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced on Friday, in the first such strike since the Trump administration told Congress that the United States was engaged in a formal “armed conflict” with Latin American cartels.

In his posting, Mr. Hegseth accused the four dead men of having been smuggling narcotics, without offering evidence. He also asserted that they were “affiliated” with one of the cartels and gangs that the Trump administration has designated as foreign terrorist organizations, but did not specify which.

The strike was the fourth known attack by the U.S. military on boats in the Caribbean Sea dating back to Sept. 2. In all, the military has now summarily killed 21 people it says were smuggling drugs as if they were not criminal suspects but enemy soldiers in a war zone.

“Our intelligence, without a doubt, confirmed that this vessel was trafficking narcotics, the people onboard were narco-terrorists, and they were operating on a known narco-trafficking transit route,” Mr. Hegseth wrote. “These strikes will continue until the attacks on the American people are over!!!!” » | Charlie Savage | Reporting from Washington | Friday, October 3, 2025

Trump's Speech to Military Leaders PROVES He's Dangerously Unfit as Commander-in-Chief

Oct 3, 2025 | The minute Donald Trump told the military leadership that they should use American cities and the American people as "military training grounds" every member of the military leadership instantly knew that Trump is dangerously unfit to be commander in chief of the armed forces. In fact, urging the military to conduct war training operations in American cities and on the American people - who Trump called "the enemy from within", - makes clear that Trump is a domestic enemy of the Constitution.

I spoke with military law expert, law professor, and retired Army JAG officer [Judge Advocate General’s Corps] Dan Maurer about this dangerous development.

Sanae Takaichi to Become First Female Prime Minister of Japan | BBC News

Oct 4, 2025 | Japan's ruling conservative party has elected Sanae Takaichi as its new leader, positioning the 64-year-old to be Japan's first female prime minister.

Takaichi is among the more conservative candidates leaning to the party's right.

She faces many challenges including uniting a struggling ruling party after a turbulent few years which saw it rocked by scandals and internal conflicts. She also has to contend with a sluggish economy and Japanese households struggling with relentless inflation and a stagnant wages.

Michael Lambert: Pathetic Hegseth and Deluded Trump Insult the Intelligence of 800 Generals

Oct 4, 2025 | More ego, more exaggeration, more delusion? Another speech by Donald Trump has the world shaking their heads. From the White House to rallies across the USA, it's always the same old Trump news. What will he say next?

This week he and Pete Hegseth instructed 800 of the most senior military officers to attend at Quantica, Virginia where Hegseth gave a banal and patronising speech followed by Trump who rambled utter nonsense and lies for an hour and a half.

The event, in which Trump tried to warn the generals and admirals present that the United States was facing a 'war from within' and that they should be ready to deploy troops in US cities was a disaster.

Trump Casts Shadow over Nobels as Prize-awarding Body Warns Academic Freedom at Risk

THE GUARDIAN: US president has proposed measures that Royal Swedish Academy of Science VP says will ‘have devastating effects’

One of the Nobel prize awarding bodies has warned that academic freedom is under threat in the US and elsewhere, with political interference risking long-lasting negative effects – as scientists get ready for next week’s award announcements.

Donald Trump has introduced or proposed a swathe of measures in his second term that critics argue will hamper education and scientific research.

Ylva Engstrom, vice-president of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, which awards the prizes for chemistry, physics and economics, said the Trump administration’s changes were reckless.

“I think in both the short and long term, it can have devastating effects,” she told Reuters in an interview. “Academic freedom ... is one of the pillars of the democratic system.” » | Reuters | Friday, October 3, 2025
