THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: Salman Rushdie says all religions have their extremists but "the overwhelming weight of the problem lies in the world of Islam"
Accusations of 'Islamophobia' are being levelled at anyone who dares to speak out against the "hate-filled rhetoric" of Islamic fanaticism, Salman Rushdie has claimed in a speech condemning Isil and "this new age of religious mayhem".
Rushdie voiced his fears that the language of "jihadi-cool" is seducing young British Muslims, many via Twitter and YouTube, into joining the "decapitating barbarianism" of Isil, the group also referred to as Islamic State or Isis.
In his PEN/Pinter Prize Lecture, the author said all religions have their extremists but "the overwhelming weight of the problem lies in the world of Islam". » | Anita Singh, Arts and Entertainment Editor | Thursday, October 09, 2014

Ben Affleck in Passionate Defence of Islam on Bill Maher Show
Ben Affleck appeared on HBO's television show Real Time with Bill Maher to promote his latest film, Gone Girl |
Ben Affleck, the Oscar-winning actor and director, has launched a ferocious defence of Islam, after becoming involved in a heated argument when he appeared on an American chat show.
Affleck, the star of Good Will Hunting and director of Argo, appeared on HBO’s television show Real Time with Bill Maher to promote his latest film, Gone Girl.
But instead of talking about the film, the 42-year-old found himself in a furious discussion with both Maher and Sam Harris, the author of a series of books on religion.
Maher, an outspoken atheist and critic of Islam, said last week in his show that “vast numbers of Muslims around the world believe that humans deserve to die for merely holding a different idea, or drawing a cartoon, or writing a book, or eloping with the wrong person.”
He said: “Not only does the Muslim world have something in common with ISIS, it has too much in common with ISIS.” » | Harriet Alexander | Sunday, October 05, 2014

Peter Kassig: Idealistic Aid Worker Who Converted to Islam in Captivity
THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: Parents of former US Army Ranger, the latest Western hostage to be threatened with murder by Isil extremists, says "Our hearts ache for you to be granted your freedom"
Peter Kassig, the latest hostage to be threatened with murder by Islamist extremists, is an American veteran who served in Iraq and whose decision to convert to Islam in captivity has so far failed to save his life.
Mr Kassig, 26, is shown kneeling on the ground in an orange jumpsuit at the end of footage showing the murder of Alan Henning, a British aid worker.
A masked member of the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (Isil) says he will become the fifth Westerner to be killed if the US-led coalition does not halt its bombing campaign in Iraq and Syria.
Yet like Mr Henning, who was kidnapped delivering aid to Syrians, Mr Kassig's path to the Middle East suggests Isil's propaganda machine will have to to gloss over his humanitarian work in the region. And it will also have to contend with his desire to learn more about the Middle East and conversion to Islam. » | Rob Crilly, New York, and Josie Ensor | Saturday, October 04, 2014

British Jihadist Calls for Terror Attacks in UK
A British-accented jihadist has released a video urging Muslim men in the UK to rise up and "cause terror in the hearts" of the British people |
A British-accented jihadist has released a video urging Muslim men in UK to rise up and "cause terror in the hearts" of the British people.
The unidentified fighter calls David Cameron "a despicable swine" and challenges him to send British ground troops against the Islamic State so the jihadists can "send them back one-by-one in coffins".
"You're fighting people who love death more than you love life," the jihadist says.
Unlike the masked British man featured in the beheading videos of two American journalists and a British aid worker, the man in the most-recent video leaves his face defiantly uncovered. » | Raf Sanchez, Washington | Friday, October 03, 2014

British Isis Fighter Calls David Cameron a ‘Despicable Swine’ in Online Video
A still from the Isis propaganda video in which an apparent British Islamic State fighter calls the prime minister a 'despicable swine'. |
An apparent British Islamic State (Isis) fighter has appeared unmasked in a video posted online in which he calls the prime minister, David Cameron, a “despicable swine”.
Dressed in camouflage fatigues and with a bandaged right arm, the bespectacled man challenges western governments to “send all your forces on the ground” in the high-quality footage.
Sitting in front of a wall with an AK-47 rifle propped up beside him, he said: “This is a message to that despicable swine David Cameron. You along with all the other western governments have decided to bomb the Islamic State.
“If you were real men, you would send all your forces down on the ground. You would not bomb us from the sky – you would send them all on the ground fighting us one by one. But you know in the hearts of your men, they’re cowards.” » | Jamie Orme | Saturday, October 04, 2014

How Qatar Is Funding the Rise of Islamist Extremists
Few outsiders have noticed, but radical Islamists now control Libya's capital. These militias stormed Tripoli last month, forcing the official government to flee and hastening the country's collapse into a failed state.
Moreover, the new overlords of Tripoli are allies of Ansar al-Sharia, a brutal jihadist movement suspected of killing America's then ambassador to Libya, Christopher Stevens, and of trying to murder his British counterpart, Sir Dominic Asquith.
Barely three years after Britain helped to free Libya from Col Gaddafi's tyranny, anti-Western radicals hold sway. How could Britain's goal of a stable and friendly Libya have been thwarted so completely?
Step forward a fabulously wealthy Gulf state that owns an array of London landmarks and claims to be one of our best friends in the Middle East.
Qatar, the owner of Harrods, has dispatched cargo planes laden with weapons to the victorious Islamist coalition, styling itself "Libya Dawn".
Western officials have tracked the Qatari arms flights as they land in the city of Misrata, about 100 miles east of Tripoli, where the Islamist militias have their stronghold. Even after the fall of the capital and the removal of Libya's government, Qatar is "still flying in weapons straight to Misrata airport", said a senior Western official.
So it is that Qatar buys London property while working against British interests in Libya and arming friends of the jihadists who tried to kill one of our ambassadors. A state that partly owns 1 Hyde Park, London's most expensive apartment block, and the Shard, the city's tallest building, is working with people who would gladly destroy Western society. » | David Blair and Richard Spencer | Saturday, September 20, 2014

Australia Raids Foil Reported ISIS Beheading Plots
About 800 federal and state police officers raided more than a dozen properties across 12 Sydney suburbs as part of the operation -- the largest in Australian history, Australian Federal Police Deputy Commissioner Andrew Colvin told the Associated Press. Separate raids in the eastern cities of Brisbane and Logan were also conducted.
The Australian Broadcasting Corporation reported that the plan involved kidnapping randomly selected members of the public off the streets in Sydney and Brisbane, beheading them on camera, and releasing the recordings through Islamic State's propaganda arm in the Middle East. » | FoxNews.com | Thursday, September 18, 2014

Dozens of Christians 'Including Women and Children' Are Arrested in Saudi Arabia after Tip-off to State's Islamist Police Force
Islamist police in Saudi Arabia have stormed a Christian prayer meeting and arrested its entire congregation, including women and children, and confiscated their bibles, it has been reported.
The raid was the latest incident of a swingeing crackdown on religious minorities in Saudi Arabia by the country's hard-line Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice.
The 28 Christians were said to be worshipping at the home of an Indian national in the eastern city of Khafji, when the police entered the building and took them into custody. They have not been seen or heard from since, raising concerns among human rights groups as to their whereabouts.
Nina Shea, director of the Washington-based Hudson Institute's Center for Religious Freedom, told FoxNews.com: 'Saudi Arabia is continuing the religious cleansing that has always been its official policy.
'It is the only nation state in the world with the official policy of banning all churches.
'This is enforced even though there are over two million Christian foreign workers in that country. Those victimized are typically poor, from Asian and African countries with weak governments.'
Activists are now calling on the U.S. to use its considerable influence in the region to help secure the release of the incarcerated Christians. Read on and comment » | Matthew Blake for MailOnline | Monday, September 15, 2014

Salafists Form 'Sharia Police' In Order To Enforce Sharia Law in Germany
"These people's intention is to provoke and intimidate and force their ideology (upon others)," claimed Peter Jung, Wuppertal's mayor, adding that Wuppertal has always been an "open and tolerant city, which is proud of the fact that people of different religions and convictions live together in peace," as cited by Deutsche Welle.
The followers of Salafism, a fundamentalist form of Islam were seen on Wednesday, September 3, dressed in orange traffic safety vests with the words 'Sharia Police' on their backs, 'patrolling' the streets of Wuppertal. The Salafi volunteers have declared the nightlife areas of Wuppertal to be a 'Sharia Controlled Zone,' and persuaded young people "to refrain from alcohol, drugs, gambling, attending concerts, watching pornography or visiting prostitutes," the media source notes. » | Saturday, September 06, 2014

Does Moderate Islam Exist?
The guiding principle of the Islamic State (IS) is that Muslims must fight non-Muslims all over the world and offer them the following choices: Convert to Islam, pay a humiliating tax called “Jijya,” or be killed. This violent doctrine was the primary justification for the Islamic conquests by the early Muslims.
Following the latest in a long string of inhumane and barbaric attacks by the IS, who only offer these three options to non-Muslims, it becomes mandatory to ask whether this principle IS uses is Islamic or Un-Islamic.
In other words, can a young Muslim become more religious—and more obedient to Allah—without subscribing to this ancient brutality? Will he be able to find an approved Islamic theological source or interpretation that clearly contradicts this principle, or at least teaches it in a different way (i.e., contextualizing it in time and place)?
The sad answer is: No, he cannot.
Traditionally there are five sources for Islamic Law: the Koran, the Hadith of Prophet Mohamed (such as Sahih Al-Buchakry [sic]), the actions of the disciples of Mohamed (Sahaba), the four schools of Islamic jurisprudence, and the Tafseer (or Interpretations) of the Koran.
If a young Muslim were to do some research to examine whether what the IS is doing is in fact Islamic or Un-Islamic, he would find some shocking results. » | Tawfik Hamid | Sunday, September 14, 2014

Anjem Choudary: The British Extremist Who Backs the Caliphate
THE OBSERVER: Anjem Choudary, the radical Muslim linked to many Britons who have fought in Syria, talks about stoning women, rejecting democracy and freedom, and why executions are OK
Anjem Choudary is well practised in the art of making contentious or provocative statements. An acolyte of the extremist cleric Omar Bakri Muhammed, who fled the UK for Lebanon, the 47-year-old former lawyer was a founding member of Al-Muhajiroun, which celebrated the 9/11 attacks, and was proscribed along with several other groups that Choudary has fronted, including Islam4UK.
So it's no surprise that when I spoke to him last week he dismissed all allegations of Islamic State (Isis) atrocities, defended the use of crucifixion, and acknowledged Isis leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi as "the caliph of all Muslims and the prince of the believers".
Because of his large claims and small following, Choudary has often been derided, not least by fellow Muslims, as a joke figure of no significance. Yet he is known to have had links with a number of people convicted under anti-terrorism laws, as well as the killer of Lee Rigby, Michael Adebolajo.
His views may be unpalatable but, with as many as several hundred British-born Muslims thought to be fighting in Syria and Iraq with Isis and other jihadi groups, they cannot be ignored. Some reports suggest that many of the British jihadis want to return home, having grown disillusioned with the internecine warfare between rebel forces – which prompts the question of what or who inspired them to go in the first place.
Last year a report by the anti-racist organisation Hope Not Hate said that the network of groups run by Choudary has become "the single biggest gateway to terrorism in recent British history" and had "facilitated or encouraged" hundreds of young Muslims across Europe to join the more extreme militants fighting the Assad regime in Syria. While the report noted that there was no evidence that Choudary had instigated any terrorist plots, he was, it said, "a serious player on the international Islamist scene".
In reply, Choudary points out that the security services are well aware of him, and he has never been convicted or charged with a terrorism-related crime.
Whatever people may think of Choudary, it is now clear that a motivated minority of young Muslims share his views. Never was this more chillingly illustrated than in the videos of the beheadings of American journalist James Foley and his fellow hostage, US-Israeli journalist Steven Sotloff, in which a masked young man speaking with a distinct British accent wields a knife and seems to revel in a theatre of sadism. » | Andrew Anthony | Sunday, September 07, 2014

The Political Class Has Created This Terror in Our Midst
DAILY EXPRESS: THE cold-blooded murder of American journalist James Foley has once more exposed the pitiless barbarity of Islamic extremism.
What makes this atrocity all the more shocking is that it was apparently perpetrated by one of our own citizens, probably a fanatic from London.
For all its cruelty this killing is just part of a pattern of butchery and violence carried out by British-born jihadists. It has been estimated that about 1,000 British Muslims have fought for the Islamist groups in Syria and Iraq, while more than 4,000 joined the cause of the Taliban in Afghanistan.
In a chilling statistic that reflects the murderous disdain for patriotism among followers of radical Islam, there are thought to be more British Muslims in the Islamic State terror network than in our Armed Forces.
Politicians from all sides have fiercely condemned the murder of James Foley, attacking the ideology of extremism that fuels such lethal savagery. Yet our political and civic leaders also bear a terrible responsibility for the phenomenon of British jihadism. Their dangerously misguided, destructive policies have helped create this monster.
The fact is that extremism has flourished in a climate formed by the twin strategies of mass immigration and multiculturalism. Open borders have led to a phenomenal expansion in Britain's Muslim population to almost three million, many of the new arrivals hailing from parts of Africa, the Middle East and Asia where Islamic sectarianism is rife.
At the same time the dogma of cultural diversity has become one of the central obsessions of the state. We are constantly told that we must celebrate the vibrant enrichment of our society. But, by its emphasis on cultural differences and its loathing for traditional British values the doctrine of diversity has been a catastrophe for Britain.
In place of integration it has promoted division and separatism. We are a land increasingly without a mutual sense of belonging or shared national identity. It is little wonder that, according to one recent survey, 26 per cent of Muslims here said they feel no loyalty to Britain. Read on and comment » | Leo McKinstry | Fridaay, Augusts 22, 2014

Islamic State Says Vladimir Putin's Throne Is 'Under Threat and Will Fall When We Come to You'
The General Prosecutor's Office of Russia demanded that access to the address, which was posted on YouTube on Tuesday and features what jihadists say is a Russian-supplied fighter jet, be blocked.

Isis Master Plan Revealed: Islamic 'Caliphate' Will Rule Spain, China and Balkans
INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS TIMES: As the Isis (now known as Islamic State) terror group continues to consolidate its self-declared "caliphate" in territory seized in its march across north-eastern Syria and northern Iraq, a map has been released that details the "ten-state solution" it hopes to achieve over the next decade.
Walid Shoebat, a former Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) terrorist turned Islamic scholar, has translated the Arabic map of the expansionist caliphate to show the Balkans, Spain and Portugal are long-term targets for the militants.
The group, which stemmed from al-Qaeda and the Salafist ideology, rejects the notion of nationalism, aiming to remove secular governments and replace them with a pan-Islamic caliphate. » | Jack Moore | Wednesday, September 03, 2014

OJ Simpson Converts to Islam
TVNZ: O.J. Simpson is set to convert to Islam.
The former American footballer and movie star has been imprisoned in Nevada since 2008 on charges of kidnapping and armed robbery in relation to an armed robbery that took place at the Palace Station hotel-and-casino in Las Vegas in which sports memorabilia was taken.
After seeing his appeal for a re-trial quashed last and being informed in July 2013 he will serve at least another four years, Simpson has embraced the religion in a bid to change his life.
A source told National Enquirer magazine: "O.J. really thought that he was going to be successful in a bid for a new trial and eventually be released from prison.
"But now he's not eligible for parole until late 2017, which has angered him."

A source told National Enquirer magazine: "O.J. really thought that he was going to be successful in a bid for a new trial and eventually be released from prison.
"But now he's not eligible for parole until late 2017, which has angered him."

Turkey’s New Hitler
Rather than being a country relegated to the periphery of Europe and Nato, Turkey should seize on historical, geographical and cultural links with its neighbours, Mr Davutoglu believed.
Its “Muslim” and not “backslidden Christian western” neighbors that Turkey wants to rebuild relations with. It[’]s the Arian Heresy that they follow and not the Trinitarian God and defiantly not the One who built Solomon’s Temple on top of Zion’s hill.
In Mr Erdogan, whom he advised on foreign policy issues since 2003, he found an eager disciple and partner. To make the case for re-establishing Turkey’s bygone glory, the quiet thinker and the fiery populist often invoked Turkey’s Islamic heritage and anti-colonialist discourse. » | Walid Shoebat (Shoebat Exclusive) | Monday, September 01, 2014

Syria Will Help US Fight Terrorism, Says Walid Muallem
Walid Muallem said Syria was "the centre of the international coalition to fight Islamic State".
The US has already bombed IS fighters in Iraq and has hinted it would be willing to take action in Syria.
Western powers generally shun Syria's government, accusing it of carrying out atrocities in its three-year civil war.
But Mr Muallem warned that the US must co-ordinate with the Syrian government before launching any air strikes on its territory.
"Anything outside this is considered aggression," he said. (+ BBC video) » | Monday, August 25, 2014

West Poised to Join Forces with Assad in Face of Islamic State
THE INDEPENDENT: Covert co-operation may signal the beginning of a once unthinkable alliance
Islamist forces are fighting their way into western Syria from bases further east, bringing forward the prospect of US military intervention to stop their advance. If Isis, which styles itself Islamic State, threatens to take all or part of Aleppo, establishing complete dominance over the anti-government rebels, the US may be compelled to act publicly or secretly in concert with President Bashar al-Assad, whom it has been trying to displace. » | Patrick Cockburn | Friday, August 22, 2014

Brigitte Bardot Calls Marine Le Pen 'Modern Joan of Arc'
THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: Former actress Brigitte Bardot says she hopes the far-right leader will be the saviour of France in a Paris-Match interview before her 80th birthday
Brigitte Bardot, the 1960s icon of liberated, bikini-clad French womanhood, has described the far-right leader Marine Le Pen as "the Joan of Arc of the 21st century" in an interview with Paris-Match.
The magazine published a topless photo of the former actress, taken in 1967 when she was 33, on its cover this week as she prepares to celebrate her 80th birthday in September.
"I am a native Frenchwoman and proud of it," Bardot said. "I mourn the fact that my beautiful country has deteriorated in every way. It's criminal to submit to these depths."
Now an animal rights activist, she is an outspoken supporter of Ms Le Pen's anti-immigration Front National party, which topped the vote in European elections earlier this year amid widespread discontent with the Socialist government over record unemployment and the stagnant economy.
"I hope she [Ms Le Pen] saves France. She is the Joan of Arc of the 21st century," Bardot said. Burned at the stake for heresy in 1431, Joan of Arc is a Roman Catholic saint, sometimes referred to as the "mother of the French nation". » | David Chazan, Paris | Friday, August 22, 2014

Steven Sotloff: The American Journalist Whose Life Fanatics Say Is In Obama’s Hands
An IS militant with a man purported to be US journalist Steven Sotloff in a still from the group's video |
His friend Anne Marloe put it best on Twitter: “Steve Sotloff lived in Yemen for years, spoke good Arabic, deeply loved Islamic world.. for this he is threatened with beheading.”
Originally from Miami, Florida, freelance reporter Steven Joel Sotloff had been based in the Libyan city of Benghazi when he went on assignment to Syria just over a year ago.
Captured close to the Turkish border near Aleppo, he is believed to have been held in Raqqa.
Today he finds himself in the hands of Islamic State fundamentalists whose capacity for bloodshed and murder was made horrifically clear in the video released Tuesday night purportedly showing the beheading of Mr Sotloff’s fellow journalist, James Foley.
Sotloff himself appears at the end of the same video, clad in a similar orange outfit to that worn by Foley and with a knife to his throat.
Addressing the US President directly, the black-robed figure beside him warns: “The life of this American citizen, Obama, depends on your next decision.” » | Rosa Prince, New York | Wednesday, August 20, 2014

Time to Bomb ISIS
NEW YORK POST: The time for games is over.
On Tuesday, America got a horrific wake-up call: Islamic State terrorists released a gruesome video that shows them beheading James Wright Foley, an American photojournalist held in Syria since 2012. The group also showed another US journalist held hostage, Steven Joel Sotloff, and threatened to murder him as well.
“The life of this American citizen, Obama, depends on your next decision,” declares the masked terrorist as he holds Sotloff by the neck.
True, that puts President Obama in a difficult spot. But the president must do whatever it takes to counter this vicious savagery: that is, launch full-throttled airstrikes against ISIS and its “caliphate” in Iraq and Syria — until the threat is gone. » | Post Editorial Board | Wednesday, August 20, 2014

I Fear Our Panic[-]stricken Politicians Are Leading Us into Another Bloody Shambles in Iraq, Says General Sir Michael Rose
DAILY MAIL: Amid the rising tide of horror stories coming from Iraq, there seems to be little constructive thought emerging from Western politicians on how to solve the political and humanitarian issues that confront the country.
Like panic-stricken rabbits caught in the headlights, our political leaders do not appear to know which way to go.
The only thing that they do know is that something must be done. But developing a viable, effective strategy against the brutal campaign of the Islamic State has, so far, clearly been beyond their competence.
Although I strongly believe that military intervention must be instigated only as a matter of last resort and I firmly opposed the invasion of Iraq in 2003, I am convinced that there is a powerful moral — and practical — case for intervening now against the Islamic State.
For what we are witnessing is the terrible consequences of the so-called Arab Spring, so naively celebrated by our leaders just a few months ago.
As I have watched and read news reports from this embattled and disintegrating region, I have reluctantly come to the conclusion that we must intervene to protect the lives of Iraqis and hold back the rising tide of the Islamic State. ‘ISIS Is Enemy No. 1 of Islam,’ Says Saudi Grand Mufti
"The ideas of extremism, radicalism and terrorism ... have nothing to do with Islam and (their proponents) are the enemy number one of Islam," the kingdom's top cleric said in a statement[.]

Last Wednesday, Saudi Arabia donated $100 million to the United Nations Counter-Terrorism Centre (UNCCT) to help combat terrorism. » | Tuesday, August 19, 2014
Caliphate of Fear: The Curse of the Islamic State
In Raqqa, Syria, the Islamic State's "caliphate" has already become a reality. All women in the city are required to wear the niqab veil and pants are banned. Thieves have their hands hacked off and opponents are publicly crucified or beheaded, with the images of these horrific acts then posted on social networks.
The few hair salons that are still open are required to black out the pictures of women on the packaging for hair dye solutions. Weddings are only permitted to take place without music. And at livestock markets, the hindquarters of goats and sheep must be covered in order to prevent men from viewing their genitalia and having uncomely thoughts.
Any person caught out on the street during the five daily prayer times is risking his or her life.
The jihadists with the Islamic State, or IS, are acting out their fantasies of omnipotence in the name of God. They're murdering, torturing and forcing families to give their daughters away for marriage to Islamist fighters coming in from abroad. One girl whose family agreed to marry her off took her own life. » | Spiegel Staff | Tuesday, August 19, 2014

British Extremists among 'Most Vicious' in Isis, Expert Says
British extremists are among the "most vicious and vociferous fighters" in Islamic State (Isis) ranks in Syria and Iraq, a jihadism expert has said.
Sunni Muslims from the UK are taking part in the conflicts "in every way", according to Shiraz Maher from King's College London's International Centre for the Study of Radicalisation.
That includes acting as suicide bombers and executioners, he told BBC Radio 4's Today programme on Wednesday after a video purporting to show a US journalist being beheaded by an Isis fighter with a British accent was placed online.
The black-clothed and masked man, who spoke with traces of a London accent, threatened bloodshed in the gruesome video, accusing America of plotting against Muslims and interfering in their affairs before taking a knife to his victim's throat. » | Press Association | Wednesday, August 20, 2014

Anti-Semitism in Britain: "Sit Up and Take Notice"
It is never the person who commits these sorts of crimes that is held morally responsible by Britain's media or politicians. That honor is reserved for a nation over 2,000 miles away, Israel.
What if Christians objecting to the genocide being carried out by ISIS in Iraq, say, went around in mobs violently menacing Muslim businesses?
A striking feature of the rising tide of anti-Semitism in Britain is the silence with which the country's leaders are choosing to respond to a growing climate of hatred and intimidation, directed not only at Jews themselves, but increasingly anything remotely Jewish.
According to a report published in July by the Community Security Trust, a charity established to ensure the safety of the Jewish community in 1994, even though four out of every five anti-Semitic attacks usually take place "in the main Jewish centers of Greater London and Greater Manchester," violent assaults against Jews and symbols of Judaism are also now taking place nationwide. » | George Igler | Wednesday, August 20, 2014

Hunt Begins for 'British' Islamic State Executioner of US Journalist James Foley
Intelligence agencies are trying to identify the executioner of American journalist James Foley after he spoke with what appeared to be an English accent.
The Islamic State jihadi, clad all in black with his face covered, addressed the camera during a five-minute video and delivered an anti-American rant in what appeared to be an accent from London or southern England.
It will raise fears about the role of extremists from the UK in Islamic State, which now controls large swathes of Syria and Iraq.
One tweet from an account dedicated to the "upcoming conquest of the Americas" described the man as a "foreign muhaji, British, who climbed the ranks and shook America to its knees." However, it was unclear if the author knew his identity or was simply responding to media reports.
In the video the masked man points a knife at the camera with his left hand and says: "This is James Wright Foley, an American citizen, of your country. As a government, you have been at the forefront of the aggression towards the Islamic State.
"Today, your military air force is attacking us daily in Iraq...any attempt by you, Obama, to deny the Muslims their rights of living in safety under the Islamic Caliphate will result in the bloodshed of your people." » | Nick Allen and Philip Sherwell | Wednesday, August 20, 2014

Removing Kosher Food from Shelves Is Giving In to Hatred
Terrorism takes many forms. But whether it is Islamist extremists on the streets of London or IS beheadings in Syria and Iraq, it has one common thread – it is designed to instil such fear that a society or community changes its very way of life.
On Saturday, a branch of Sainsbury’s removed all kosher food from its shelves over fears that anti-Israel protesters picketing outside would attack the shop. Compared with the impact of the 7/7 murders, Sainsbury’s behaviour was certainly banal. But it was more than that, because in its way it was both giving in to, and colluding with, a form of terrorism.
In response to those protesters outside Sainsbury’s Holborn branch calling for a boycott of its Israeli goods, the manager ordered his staff to clear the shop of all its kosher goods. Clearly the manager is not the brightest spark in the firmament, since kosher produce – which is the only food observant Jews are allowed to eat – is not the same as Israeli produce – which is simply food produced in Israel. The kosher produce in the shop was apparently made in the UK and Poland, and had never been near Israel. » | Stephen Pollard* | Tuesday, August 19, 2014

Britain Is Target for Islamic State Warns Former MI6 Chief
Britain’s history in the Middle East makes it a target for Islamic State terrorists and it must deal with the threat from jihadists for “some considerable time to come”, a former deputy head of MI6 has warned.
Nigel Inkster said Britain’s role drawing up the modern map of the region made it a target for the Islamic militants who want to wipe away those borders for a new religious state.
But he said there is no case for America or Britain to send troops into Iraq to help the Baghdad government defeat fighters who have seized swathes of the country.
A “small but potentially significant” number of British and Europeans jihadists who can easily travel to the UK are already fighting in Iraq and Syria.
He said: “From a longer term perspective, I think the Islamic State would see it as part of its strategy to undertake attacks against former colonial powers.” » | Ben Farmer, Defence Correspondent | Tuesday, August 19, 2014

Why Western Democracy Can Never Work in the Middle East
As I write, the immediate crisis on Mount Sinjar appears to have been resolved but the appalling scenes which have dominated our television screens in recent weeks and the graphic reports in newspapers have galvanised public opionion. People demand that we do all in our power to help the Christians and the Yasidis who are being so viciously persecuted. And they are right to do so. This is a problem that will not go away. One million people have been displaced since Islamic State militants took over swathes of Northern Iraq. Yesterday, the governor of Dohuk province warned of a “genocide”, as hundreds of thousands sought refuge there.
So what exactly is in our power? This requires a realistic appraisal of the situation on the ground and of our capacity to change it. Certainly, the situation across the Middle East is now more chaotic and dangerous than it has been for half a century.
The enthusiasm of yester-year for the “Arab Spring” has proved entirely misguided. It has led to chaos in Egypt and anarchy in Libya. Those determined to be “on the right side of history” now find themselves on the wrong side of the argument. Democracy is empathically not the solution for extremely complex societies and Western meddling only makes matters immeasurably worse. The fundamental reason for our failure is that democracy, as we understand it, simply doesn’t work in Middle Eastern countries where family, tribe, sect and personal friendships trump the apparatus of the state. These are certainly not societies governed by the rule of law. On the contrary, they are better described as “favour for favour” societies. When you have a problem of any kind, you look for someone related to you by family, tribe or region to help you out and requests are most unlikely to be refused since these ties are especially powerful. In countries where there is no effective social security, your future security lies only in the often extensive family. Anti-Israel Shop Protests Risk Bringing Middle Eastern Violence to High Streets – Jewish leaders
Protest groups targeting supermarkets over the sale of Israeli products risk importing Middle Eastern violence to British high streets, Jewish have leaders insisted.
In a joint statement the leaders of Britain’s main Jewish community organisations condemned a series of incidents at shops selling Israeli goods and kosher food accusing the organisers of intimidation and stirring up tensions.
They specifically challenged trades unions to distance themselves from the protests which prompted one branch of Sainsbury’s in central London temporarily to clear its shelves of kosher food amid fears that anti-Israel protesters were about to ransack the shop.
On Monday night the TUC spoke out against intimidation of shop workers and Usdaw, which represents retailers, said it supported its members in protecting their safety and their livelihoods.
It comes amid an upsurge of anti-Semitic incidents in Britain and other parts of Europe since the outbreak of fighting in Gaza this summer. » | John Bingham, Religious Affairs Editor | Monday, August 18, 2014
