Nazi 'Perfect Aryan' Poster Child Was Jewish

Hessy Taft recently presented the Yad Vashem Holocaust
Memorial in Israel with a Nazi magazine featuring her baby
photograph on the front cover, and told the story of how she
became an unlikely poster child for the Third Reich
THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: Hessy Taft's baby photograph was selected by Nazi party as the ideal Aryan infant, but Joseph Goebbels' propaganda machine never discovered that she was in fact Jewish

When Hessy Taft was six months old, she was a poster child for the Nazis. Her photograph was chosen as the image of the ideal Aryan baby, and distributed in party propaganda. But what the Nazis didn’t know was that their perfect baby was really Jewish.

“I can laugh about it now,” the 80-year-old Professor Taft told Germany’s Bild newspaper in an interview. “But if the Nazis had known who I really was, I wouldn’t be alive.”

Prof Taft recently presented the Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial in Israel with a Nazi magazine featuring her baby photograph on the front cover, and told the story of how she became an unlikely poster child for the Third Reich.

Her parents, Jacob and Pauline Levinsons, both talented singers, moved to Berlin from Latvia to pursue careers in classical music in 1928, only to find themselves caught up in the Nazis’ rise to power.

Her father lost his job at an opera company because he was Jewish, and had to find work as a door-to-door salesman.

In 1935, with the city rife with anti-semitic attacks, Pauline Levinsons took her six-month-old daughter Hessy to a well-known Berlin photographer to have her baby photograph taken.

A few months later, she was horrified to find her daughter’s picture on the front cover of Sonne ins Hause, a major Nazi family magazine. » | Justin Huggler, Berlin | Tuesday, July 01, 2014

The ISIS Map of the World: Militants Outline Chilling Five-year Plan for Global Domination as They Declare Formation of Caliphate - and Change Their Name to the Islamic State

MAIL ONLINE: Sunni militants have announced formation of Islamic state in Middle East / They demand Muslims around the world swear allegiance to the caliphate / Claim leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi now has authority over all Muslims / Group has also now changed its name from ISIS to just the Islamic State / Announcement described as 'most significant development in international jihadism since 9/11'.

ISIS has formally declared the establishment of a caliphate, or Islamic state, in the vast stretches of the Middle East that have fallen under its control, and has outlined a vision to expand into Europe.

The announcement was described as the 'most significant development in international jihadism since 9/11'.

Upon declaring a caliphate, the Sunni militants - whose brutality in attempting to establish control in Iraq and Syria has been branded too extreme even by Al Qaeda - demanded allegiance from Muslims around the world.

With brutal efficiency, ISIS has carved out a large chunk of territory that has effectively erased the border between Iraq and Syria and laid the foundations of its proto-state.

The announcement, made on the first day of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, could trigger a wave of infighting among Sunni extremist factions that have until now formed a loose rebel alliance.

A spokesman for ISIS declared the group's chief, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, as the leader of the new caliphate, or Islamic state, and called on Muslims everywhere, not just those in areas under the organization's control, to swear loyalty to him.

'The legality of all emirates, groups, states and organizations becomes null by the expansion of the caliph's authority and the arrival of its troops to their areas,' said Abu Mohammed al-Adnani.

'Listen to your caliph and obey him. Support your state, which grows every day,' he added in an audio statement posted online. Read on and comment » | John Hall | Published: Monday, June 30, 2014 | Updated: Tuesday, July 01, 2014

Tony Blair Raises Spectre That Returning British Jihadists ‘Could Use Kenya Terror Tactics’ To Disrupt UK

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: Amid fears of new undetectable bomb threat to planes, former prime minister discusses dangers posed by return of up to 1,500 “battle-hardened, determined and trained” British jihadists from Iraq and Syria

Tony Blair has raised the spectre that “battle-hardened” British jihadists returning from the Middle East could wreak the same sort of havoc as Islamic terrorists have inflicted in Kenya by targetting the tourism industry.

The former Prime Minister was talking to Yahoo News about the dangers faced by Western countries from their returning citizens who have trained and fought in Iraq and Syria.

“The important thing to realise is that they are our citizens so we cannot stop them coming back,” Mr Blair told interviewer Katie Couric when asked about fears that terrorists with Western passports could smuggle new undetectable bombs on to planes.

“We don’t know where they have been, but they will come back into our country, they have got the right to be in our country. And there are two things that worry me about this[:] » | Philip Sherwell, New York | Tuesday, July 01, 2014

Furious David Cameron kicked EU president Herman van Rompuy out of Downing Street after clashing over Brussels jobs, Downing Street confirmed today.

The Prime Minister called a dramatic halt to talks on making Jean-Claude Juncker the new President of the European Commission.

ISIS Crisis Has More Chaos to Spare

YNET NEWS: Analysis: ISIS appears ready to continue its conquests. How far can the militants reach and what will they leave behind in their wake?

The name has been on everyone’s lips recently. The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) has catalogued some truly stunning military victories in the last few weeks, threatening the very existence of Iraq and Syria through its dream of uniting the two (and other countries) into a greater Islamic Caliphate in the Middle East.

Most disturbingly, their extreme show of force was completely unexpected, a difficult feat to accomplish under the watchful eyes of the West, but one that was repeated by the ISIS attack Wednesday on Iraq’s largest air force base.

This second surprise attack came as experts were predicting that the group would begin to consolidate its control over territory already captured, instead of trying to extend its military (of only several thousand fighters) any further, raising the question of how far ISIS will get.

The Levant, stretching from Iraq in the East to Israel, Lebanon, and even Cyprus in the West, marks ISIS’ territorial claims. Can they realistically capture all that land?

The answer, in all likelihood, is no. Absolutely not. So much would have to be accomplished in such a short time by such a small group that the possibility is relatively inconceivable.

However, the gains already made by ISIS along with the stagnation and lack of political will in the West means that this crisis is far from over. Chaos and brutality has yet to abdicate their throne in the Middle East and these forces will have far reaching impacts on politics, fundamentally changing the way the modern world views humanity, terrorism, the role of the UN and the US, and the very nature of warfare. » | John-Michael Kibrick | Sunday, June 29, 2014

European Rights Court to Rule on French Burqa Ban

ARAB NEWS: STRASBOURG, France: Europe’s top rights court rules on Tuesday whether France’s controversial burqa ban is “degrading” and a breach of religious freedom in a case brought by a woman described as a “perfect French citizen.”

The 24-year-old university graduate has requested anonymity because of concern over the reaction to her lawsuit in France, where the law banning full-face veils in public spaces was approved in 2010 under former president Nicolas Sarkozy and has been fully backed by the current Socialist government.

The woman, identified only by her initials S.A.S., and her British legal team are seeking to persuade the European Court of Human Rights to categorize the French law as essentially discriminatory.

The defendant — who also has family in Britain’s second city of Birmingham — argues that the ban violates her rights to freedom of religion, expression and assembly, and is also discriminatory.

She is a “perfect French citizen with university education,” her British lawyer Tony Muman told the European court at a hearing last year.
“She speaks of her country with passion... She is a patriot,” Muman had said. » | Yann Ollivier | AFP | Monday, June 30, 2014

ISIL Declares the Establishment of the Caliphate and Changes Its Name to the "Islamic State"

The official spokesperson for the terrorist group "the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL) Abu Muhammad al-Adnani al-Shami has stated in a recent audio message that his group is now declaring the establishment of the Islamic Caliphate, with Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi (aka Ibrahim Awwad) as the Caliph of Muslims around the world. He also mentioned that the name of the group no longer contains the phrase "in Iraq and al-Sham (the Levant)" but is now simply referred to as "the Islamic State".

What Is Isis and What Are Its Aims?

Isis, the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, is a militant group so hardline that it was disavowed by al-Qaida. Recent photos and video appear to show members executing prisoners near Tikrit. Three years of civil war in Syria – and a manifesto that disavows notions of statehood and national boundaries – have helped it to claim hundreds of square miles of territory, and now it is gaining a foothold in Iraq, explains the Guardian's assistant foreign editor, Phoebe Greenwood

THE GUARDIAN: Jihadist group challenges al-Qaida as it changes name to Islamic State and pledges to free Palestine in video

Islamist militants have declared an Islamic "caliphate" in an area straddling Iraq and Syria, trumpeting the declaration in several videos.

One slick video, mostly in English, features a bearded fighter with an AK-47 on his back, explaining the new caliphate.

"This is not the first border we will break, we will break other borders," a jihadist from the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (Isis) warned in the video called End of Sykes-Picot, a reference to the agreement between France and Britain that divided up the Ottoman empire territories after the first world war.

Later the fighter pledges that jihadists will free Palestine. "We are not here to replace an Arab cahoot with a western cahoot. Rather our jihad is more lofty and higher. We are fighting to make the word of Allah the highest," the spokesman said.

He is filmed showing abandoned Iraqi army badges and vehicles left by fleeing soldiers. "There is no army in the world that can withstand the soldiers of Islam," he said.

The video features about a dozen men in a cell said to be captured troops and border police. A building, said to be a police station, is shown being blown up, as well as US-made Humvees captured from the border police. "Look how much America spends to fight Islam, and it ends up just being in our pockets," the spokesman taunted.

Isis Announces Caliphate in 'Declaration of War'

THE GUARDIAN: British academic says new statement suggests Isis is now challenging al-Qaida for global leadership of the jihad movement

The announcement of a formal Islamic state by insurgents in Syria and Iraq is a "declaration of war against the West and al Qaida", an expert has warned. The Islamic State in Iraq and Greater Syria (Isis) group has sought to solidify its leadership of worldwide jihad today by declaring that its leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, is the new caliph, or head of state.

Abu Mohammed al-Adnani, a spokesman for the group, called for those living in the area under the group's control in both countries to swear allegiance to Baghdadi.

Around 500 British-linked citizens are already thought to have travelled to the Middle East to fight with the Sunni Muslim group against its Alawite and Shia sectarian foes amid fears that more will join them.

Professor Peter Neumann, from the International Centre for the Study of Radicalisation at King's College London, said the significance of today's announcement should not be underestimated. "It's a declaration of war – not only against the west and all the countries that are currently fighting Isis, but more importantly, against al-Qaida. Isis now see themselves as the legitimate leaders of the movement and they expect everyone to fall in line.

"For ideological jihadists, the caliphate is the ultimate aim, and Isis – in their eyes – have come closer to realising that vision than anyone else. On that basis, Isis leaders believe they deserve everyone's allegiance. » | Press Association | Sunday, June 29, 2014

Isis Declares Its Captive Territories an 'Islamic Caliphate'

Isis demands all Muslims pledge obedience to its leader,
Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, left
THE SUNDAY TELEGRAPH: Jihadist group Isis demands all Muslims declare obedience to its leader as it lays claim to the mantle of the great Muslim empires of the past

Fresh from their victories over the Iraqi army and on the first night of the holy month of Ramadan, the jihadist group Isis has declared its captive territories an “Islamic Caliphate” and demanded all Muslims declare obedience to its leader.

In a recorded audio statement, the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham’s spokesman, Abu Mohammed al-Adnani, said the new caliphate ran from Aleppo to Diyala province, north-east of Baghdad, and was expanding every day.

“The time has come for the Ummah [nation] of Mohammed (peace be upon him) to wake up from its sleep, remove the garments of dishonour, and shake off the dust of humiliation and disgrace,” he says. “For the era of lamenting and moaning has gone, and the dawn of honour has emerged anew.

“The sun of jihad has risen. The glad tidings of good are shining. Triumph looms on the horizon. The signs of victory have appeared.”

Harar: The City of Beer and Mosques

BBC: Ethiopia's historic city of Harar is one of Islam's holiest centres - but in recent times it has built up another tradition and is now also known for its brewery.

As holy cities go, Harar is a colourful one. Inside the walls of the old town I find buildings in greens, purples and yellows - its women seem to take this as a challenge, dressing in veils and robes of shocking pink and the brightest orange.

Harar lies far in the east of Ethiopia, with a road that rises out of the town in the direction of Somaliland.

Pope Francis Condemns Rome's 'Moral Decay'

Pope Francis lashed out at political corruption, joblessness and
Europe's low birth rates
THE SUNDAY TELEGRAPH: Rome's prostitution and queues of people outside a soup kitchen are signs of moral decay, the Pope has said, in an attack on society in which he said people find pets easier to deal with than children

Pope Francis has condemned the "moral decay" of the city of Rome, citing the child prostitutes that ply their trade and the busy soup kitchens of the Italian capital.

In a broadside against declining moral standards in the West, the Pontiff cited the darker sides of the streets of his adopted home as an example of modern society's failings.

Despite it being the home of the Vatican, Pope Francis said, "The Eternal City, which should be a beacon to the world, is a mirror of the moral decay of society."

In a wide-ranging interview with Rome daily Il Messaggero, he also lashed out at political corruption, joblessness and Europe's low birth rates. He claimed that many Europeans found many it easier to own pets than raise children.

"This," he said, "is another phenomenon of cultural decay, because affectionate relationships with animals are easier and more controllable. An animal is not free, while having a child is complicated." » | Tom Kington, Rome | Sunday, June 29, 2014

Helmut Kohl's Wife Accused of Hijacking Husband's Political Legacy amid Memoirs Row

Helmut Kohl and Maike Kohl-Richter
THE SUNDAY TELEGRAPH: Maike Kohl-Richter, 50-year-old wife of Helmut Kohl, the 84-year-old former chancellor of Germany, criticised after reportedly ordering return of husband's political writings from foundation archive

The wife of Helmut Kohl, the 84-year-old former chancellor of Germany, has become embroiled in a bitter dispute with Angela Merkel’s ruling party about the public rights to Mr Kohl’s political writings.

Maike Kohl-Richter, 50, has been accused of “interfering” in the political legacy of her husband, who ruled Germany from 1982 to 1998 and is seen as the architect of German reunification.

Mr Kohl suffered a bad fall and injuries to his head in February 2008, and as a result cannot speak for more than ten minutes at a time and often slurs his words.

He married Mrs Kohl-Richter, an economist who worked in the chancellery, three months after his fall, and three years after presenting her as his “life partner”.

Since his fall, she has devoted most of her time to looking after the ailing former leader.

However she has been widely criticised in the German media and by Mr Kohl’s own children for allegedly hero-worshipping the former chancellor and being obsessed with protecting him. » | Tony Paterson, Berlin | Sunday, June 29, 2014

New Dark Age Alert! Isis Crucifies Nine People in Syrian Villages

THE SUNDAY TELEGRAPH: Crucifixions have been meted out by Isis across Syria as punishment to rebels

A man has survived being crucified by Isis in Syria, after the jihadists raided his village and nailed him to a cross for eight hours.

The unnamed man from Al-Bab, near the border with Turkey, was crucified as a punishment, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

He managed to survive the ordeal.

But eight others who received the same punishment did not survive. The men, from Deir Hafer in the east of Aleppo province, were subjected to the same treatment and crucified "in the main square of the village, where their bodies will remain for three days", the Britain-based monitor said.

The men were reportedly rebels fighting against both President Bashar al-Assad and jihadist groups including Isis. » | Harriet Alexander, and agencies | Sunday, June 29, 2014

A Defeat - and a Disaster

THE INDEPENDENT – EDITORIAL: David Cameron’s handling of Jean-Claude Juncker has helped to create the worst of all possible EU worlds

It was a defeat long foretold, but that does not diminish the scale of the debacle David Cameron suffered in Ypres last night. His tone afterwards was self-righteous: his fellow leaders would “live to regret” their support for Jean-Claude Juncker as the President of the European Commission, which was “a sad moment for Europe”. But his abject failure to halt the Juncker juggernaut, which gained the support of 26 out of 28 leaders, was an even sadder moment for Mr Cameron himself, and for Britain.

The candidacy of Mr Juncker, the former Prime Minister of Luxembourg, aroused enthusiasm among very few, even in the upper ranks of the Eurocrats. He is a walking, talking symbol of all that is out of date and out of touch about the union as currently constituted, and he was not even favoured by Angela Merkel, who was unimpressed by his handling of the euro crisis. But in a spectacular display of political miscalculation, Mr Cameron converted that indifference and dislike into reluctant but almost total support, painting himself into a corner which in the end he shared only with Viktor Orban, the authoritarian Prime Minister of Hungary.

As Labour’s shadow Foreign Secretary, Douglas Alexander, pointed out earlier this week, Mr Cameron had made the mistake of “playing the man, not the ball” over Mr Juncker’s appointment, taking an aggressively personal tone against a figure who is immensely well knitted into conservative forces across the bloc. Tony Blair Accused of Conflict of Interests in Middle East

Tony Blair. Rumours are circulating in London and Cairo
of plans to advise the Egyptian government under
President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi.
THE GUARDIAN: Critics unite to demand his sacking as Quartet's envoy as evidence emerges of his private business interests expanding in region

Iraq's latest bloody crisis and its links to the 2003 war brought Tony Blair back into the headlines this week, along with calls for him to step down as a Middle East peace envoy – but new evidence has emerged that his private business interests in the ever-volatile region are expanding.

Aides to the former prime minister confirmed that he was actively considering opening an office in Abu Dhabi, capital of the United Arab Emirates, which is in the frontline of the struggle against political Islam. But a spokesperson denied suggestions by a leading Arab economist that he was being considered for a job advising Oman on its long-term development, after his controversial £27m consultancy project for the Kuwaiti government in recent years.

Retired diplomats and political enemies united to demand Blair be sacked as the envoy of the Quartet – the UN, US, Russia and EU – after achieving little to promote Israeli-Palestinian peace in seven years. Read on and comment » | Ian Black and Patrick Kingsley | Friday, June 27, 2014

Poor White Pupils Put Off School by Multicultural Timetable

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: A study finds that working-class white children are being turned off school because lessons are too focused on celebrating other cultures while shunning British traditions

White working class children are being “marginalised” at school after being forced to follow a multicultural timetable that shuns British traditions, according to research.

Large numbers of schools follow a curriculum that celebrates a “diverse range of pupils” while sidelining those from poor British families, it was claimed.

Head teachers told how they ran numerous projects such as Black History Month and “cultural days” to raise awareness of countries such as Portugal, Poland and Jamaica.

But it was claimed that white British pupils from deprived homes often “cannot see themselves or their lives reflected in the curriculum”, turning them off school altogether. » | Graeme Paton, Education Editor | Friday, June 27, 2014

My comment:

Multiculturalism should be consigned to the dustbin of history. It is garbage – a failed experiment. Brits should once gain be allowed to celebrate Britishness. It was when Britishness was celebrated that Britain became great. We would never have had an empire with current thinking about political correctness and multiculturalism. Never!

Now I am not suggesting that we should desire an empire again; but what I am saying is this: We are destroying our culture in our determination to make everyone feel welcome, whilst at the same time alienating the indigenous population, from whatever class they come.

Only today, I read that Salafism is now growing in Wales. In Wales! Whoever would have thought, fifty years ago, that Salafism could grow in Wales? All I can say is this: Multiculturalism and diversity should not be celebrated; rather they should be pooh-poohed for the trashy and dangerous concepts they are. – © Mark

Ultra-conservative Branch of Islam Growing in Popularity in Wales

WALES ONLINE: Up to six Welsh mosques are now part of the Islamic movement known as Salafism, including Cardiff’s Al-Manar centre

The ultra-conservative strand of Islam followed by two young Cardiff men seen on a jihad-recruiting video from Syria has been growing in popularity in Wales.

Up to six Welsh mosques are now part of the Islamic movement known as Salafism, including Cardiff’s Al-Manar centre, where Nasser Muthana, 20, younger brother Aseel Muthana, 17, and Reyaad Khan, 20, are said to have worshipped.

Nasser and Reyaad appeared in the video by Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS), which now controls huge swathes of territory in the two countries.

Aseel is understood to have travelled to the region after his elder brother.

There is disagreement within Islamic communities in the UK as to the extent to which the growth of Salafism is a concern.

EU Backs Juncker to Head Commission in Blow to UK

Jean-Claude Juncker is the choice of the European People's Party,
which won the most seats in the European Parliament
BBC: EU leaders in Brussels have nominated former Luxembourg PM Jean-Claude Juncker to be president of the European Commission, in a blow to the UK.

Prime Minister David Cameron called it "a serious mistake". "This is going to be a long, tough fight," he said.

He had pushed for a vote on Mr Juncker - breaking with tradition - and 26 out of 28 countries backed him.

Only Mr Cameron and Hungarian PM Viktor Orban voted against him. Mr Juncker is also likely to win a vote by Euro MPs.

It is the most powerful job in Brussels - the Commission drafts EU laws, oversees national budgets, enforces EU treaties and negotiates international trade deals.

Mr Cameron believes Mr Juncker is too much in favour of closer political union and might block EU reform.

"This is a bad day for Europe... it hands new power to the European Parliament," Mr Cameron said. "This whole process has simply reinforced my conviction that the EU has to change." (+ video) » | Friday, June 27, 2014

UN Committee 'Backs Argentina' Over Falkands Dispute

The ownership of the Falkland Islands has been
disputed for nearly 200 years
THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: Decolonisation Committee approves new resolution urging UK and Argentina to negotiate a solution, despite 99 per cent of residents voting to remain as they are

A UN committee has approved a new resolution calling on Britain and Argentina to negotiate a solution to their dispute over the Falkland Islands, essentially favoring Argentina's stance in the nearly 200-year-old feud.

The 24-nation Decolonisation Committee passed the resolution by consensus despite passionate speeches from a pair of Falkland Islands representatives arguing the most islanders want to keep things as they are. The decision showed that the committee members have been largely unmoved by a referendum in the Falkland Islands last year in which more than 99 percent of voters favored remaining a British Overseas Territory.

Britain has rebuffed Argentina's calls to negotiate the sovereignty of the wind-swept south Atlantic archipelago, saying it is up to the islands to decide.

Argentinian Foreign Minister Hector Timerman railed at Britain for ignoring dozens of UN resolutions urging the two countries to sit down and talk.

"It is imperative that the United Kingdom sits down again at the negotiating table," Mr Timerman said. » | Fiona Govan in Madrid | Thursday, June 26, 2014

David Cameron talks to current European commission president,

THE GUARDIAN: Prime minister says 'railroading through' candidate for European commission will have grave impact on British public opinion

David Cameron has told EU leaders they may live to regret the appointment of Jean-Claude Juncker as president of the European commission, warning them of the grave consequences on public opinion in Britain.

The British prime minister, who told EU leaders that the appointment of Juncker marked a "sad moment", tweeted his frustrations from the summit in Brussels.

"I've told EU leaders they could live to regret the new process for choosing the Commission President. I'll always stand up for UK interests."

In some of the strongest remarks by a British prime minister at an EU summit, Cameron condemned a "backroom deal" to appoint Juncker, who was being "railroaded" through against the wishes of two EU member states; Britain and Hungary.

Cameron, who warned of "wafer thin" support for the EU in Britain, told EU leaders over lunch at their summit in Brussels: "[Jean-Claude Juncker] is the ultimate Brussels insider who has been at the table for the last two decades of decisions. If you want change is that the type of person you want for the future?"

The prime minister indicated that Juncker's appointment would increase support for a British exit from the EU. His warnings came as Ed Miliband said Cameron was facing "utter humiliation" over the issue. » | Nicholas Watt and Ian Traynor in Brussels | Friday, June 27, 2014

Iran Resistance Leader Predicts Regime Change In Exclusive Fox News Interview

FOX NEWS: It is a blunt call for regime change in Tehran.

The largest gathering of the Iranian resistance starts Friday with the annual convention of the Council of Resistance of Iran. The sponsors expect 100,000 people to assemble in a massive hall outside Paris for hours of speeches, demonstrations and protests aimed at toppling the Iranian government.

"I am confident that the mullahs' religious dictatorship ruling Iran will not last in the 21st century and will be overthrown," predicts the group's leader, Maryam Rajavi. "It really begs logic to expect this religious dictatorship, the founder of terrorism and fundamentalism in the whole of the region and is seeking nuclear weapons, to take international policy hostage, to continue and endure."

In an exclusive Fox News interview, her first for American television, Rajavi methodically laid out what she sees as Tehran's intentions: to spread radical fundamentalism, obtain a nuclear weapon and do whatever it can to eliminate opponents, including continued executions of her supporters to silence the opposition.

"The mullahs do not represent the Iranian people," she said. "What the Iranian people are yearning for and what represents them, is an Iran which the Iranian resistance envisions: an Iran which is free, democratic and where the ballot box speaks, a non-nuclear Iran, with gender equality, where women and men and youth enjoy equal rights and do not threaten and endanger the world with war and challenges." » | Eric Shawn | Friday, June 27, 2014

German Pensioner Evicted from Home of 40 Years for Smoking

Friedhelm Adolfs on his arrival at the regional court in
Duesseldorf, Germany
THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: Friedhelm Adolfs, a German pensioner evicted for smoking after neighbours filed complaints, has become the focus of intense national debate

A 75-year-old man is being thrown out of his home of 40 years in Germany after neighbours complained he was disturbing them by smoking.

In a case which has attracted national interest[ed] and divided opinion in Germany, a court in Düsseldorf has ruled that Friedhelm Adolfs, a retired caretaker, must vacate his flat by the end of the year.

Mr Adolfs, who has become known as “Smoker Adolfs” in the German press, has been fighting an eviction notice from his landlady in the courts for a year and a half.

In many countries, he would have been forced to leave long before now. But tenants’ rights are strictly protected in Germany, and Mr Adolfs’ lawyers successfully argued that he could not legally be evicted simply for smoking.

But the court upheld the eviction because the pensioner had not taken sufficient steps to ventilate his flat or prevent smoke passing into the communal hall. He had not even emptied his ashtrays, the court said, and his neighbours had been forced to endure an “unacceptable and intolerable odour”. » | Justin Huggler, Berlin | Thursday, June 26, 2014

Spain's Princess Cristina Must Face Fraud Charges, Judge Rules

Cristina is accused of complicity in the allegedly dodgy
business dealings of her husband
THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: King Felipe VI's sister Princess Cristina, accused of complicity in her husband's business dealings, to face unprecedented criminal trial

The sister of the newly-crowned King Felipe VI of Spain is to face trial on corruption charges, a judge recommended on Wednesday, in a case that has fuelled anti-monarchist sentiment and led to King Juan Carlos’s decision to abdicate in favour of his son.

Princess Cristina will face charges of tax evasion and money laundering linked to her husband’s business dealings, a Spanish judge ruled, opening the path to an unprecedented criminal trial.

Less than a week after her younger brother Felipe, 46 took over the Spanish crown, the ruling served to refocused attention on a scandal that blighted the final years of the reign of 76 year-old King Juan Carlos.

Iñaki Urdangarin, 49, the former Olympic handball champion who married Princess Cristina to become the Duke of Palma in 1997, is to face nine separate charges of criminal activity. » | Fiona Govan, Madrid | Wednesday, June 25, 2014

Isis Strengthens Grip on Iraq's Western Borders

Iraq Shiite Turkmen families fleeing the violence in the Iraqi
city of Tal Afar
THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: Trans-national 'caliphate' now closer to reality

The jihadist-led alliance now running large parts of Iraq has consolidated its control to the country’s western borders, taking a town, its airport and the key trade and transport crossing to Jordan as its transnational “caliphate” becomes a reality.

The Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham and its allies, mainly Sunni tribes and ex-Baathist remnants of the regime of Saddam Hussein, finally completed its takeover of Tal Afar in the north. The Iraqi army’s commander in the city, who had vowed to hold out speaking by telephone from the nearby airport to The Daily Telegraph earlier, was photographed fleeing under the protection of the Kurdish army.

The army had been based at the airport, now also in Isis hands.

Isis also took the Al-Waleed border crossing with Syria, though Iraqi security forces later claimed to have taken it back. A Sunni tribe meanwhile took the Turaibil crossing with Jordan nearby and was negotiating with Isis to hand it over to their control, according to reports confirmed by the Iraqi army.

The Iraqi central government now has little or no presence on its western borders, with just one border crossing with Syria, Rabia, in the hands of the Kurdish Regional Government, autonomous from but notionally loyal to Baghdad. » | Richard Spencer, Erbil | Monday, June 23, 2014

Britain’s Military 'Not Good Enough' to Deal with Jihadi Threat, Warns Ex-defence Chief

Lord Richards asked in his maiden speech in the House of Lords:
'Are our armed forces in a fit state to play their role in dealing with
these and other risks to our way of life?'
THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: Lord Richards of Hertsmonceux also calls for defence spending to increase as the economy starts to grow again and says that if plans to replace regular troops with part-time reserves must work soon or junked altogether.

Britain’s military is "not good enough” to deal with the global threat of Jihadis, according to a former head of the military.

Lord Richards of Hertsmonceux also called for defence spending to increase as the economy starts to grow again and said that if plans to replace regular troops with part-time reserves must work soon or junked altogether.

The comments from Lord Richards – who as General Sir David Richards was chief of the defence staff from October 2010 to July last year – will sound alarm bells in Whitehall.

In his maiden speech in the House of Lords on Monday evening the peer questioned whether Britain’s armed forces would be in a “fit state” to deal with threats from terrorists.

Polish MPs Ridicule Cameron's 'Stupid Propaganda' Aimed at Eurosceptics

THE GUARDIAN: Secretly taped expletive-laden conversation reveals EU fallout from prime minister's plans to curb migrants' benefits access

The Polish foreign minister believes David Cameron has "fucked up" his handling of the EU by resorting to "stupid propaganda" to appease Eurosceptics, according to an expletive-laden transcript of secretly taped conversations.

Radoslaw Sikorski, who is close to many senior Tories and as an Oxford University student was a member of the Bullingdon Club at the same time as Boris Johnson, made the comments in a conversation with the former Polish finance minister Jacek Rostowski.

The conversation between the two men, printed in Monday's edition of Wprost news magazine, reveals the extent of the fallout between Poland and the UK over Cameron's proposals to change EU migrants' access to benefits.

Downing Street responded to the leaked Polish tapes by saying that the prime minister would continue to stand up for British interests and deal with the "abuse" of free movement because support for the EU in Britain is "wafer thin". » | Philip Oltermann in Berlin, Ian Traynor in Brussels and Nicholas Watt | Monday, June 23, 2014

Al Jazeera calls on Egypt to release its journalists immediately
AL JAZEERA: Governments, social media users and journalists come together to condemn verdict against Greste, Fahmy and Mohamed.

Egypt has been widely condemned after finding three Al Jazeera English journalists guilty on charges of aiding the Muslim Brotherhood and reporting false news.

Peter Greste, Mohamed Fahmy and Baher Mohamed were found guilty by a Cairo court on Monday and jailed for seven years. Mohamed was jailed for three additional years for possessing ammunition.

The Netherlands and the UK said they would summon the Egyptian ambassador over the sentencing. The Dutch foreign ministry said that the "minimum requirements for a fair trial were not met".

"I am appalled by the guilty verdicts handed down today against Egyptian and international journalists in Egypt," the UK foreign secretary, William Hague, said in a statement.

"I am particularly concerned by unacceptable procedural shortcomings during the trial process, including that key prosecution evidence was not made available to the defence team."

The Canadian ambassador David Drake, who attended the session for Fahmy, an Egyptian-Canadian, said there were many questions over the verdict.

"We are very disappointed," he said. "We are digesting this ... We don't understand this particular verdict.'' » | Monday, June 23, 2014

Commission Crusade: Cameron Outmaneuvered in Battle over Juncker

SPIEGEL ONLINE INTERNATIONAL: British Prime Minister David Cameron is determined not to let Jean-Claude Juncker become president of the European Commission. But he is increasingly isolated. He might face his Waterloo as early as next week.

Reading the newspaper hasn't been particularly pleasurable for Jean-Claude Juncker in recent days. First, British historian Timothy Garton Ash compared him to King Louis the XVI, who was executed by the guillotine. Then, the Swiss paper Weltwoche lumped him together with Hitler and Mussolini and the British tabloid Sun described him as "the most dangerous man in Europe."

Juncker had suspected that the British press in particular would go on the attack against him, but he recently had to summon the police after paparazzi climbed over a fence into his property. Furthermore, his 90-year-old father burst into tears when a tabloid accused him of Nazi association. (The older Juncker was forceably recruited into the Wehrmacht following the occupation of Luxembourg.)

The situation is a delicate one: British Prime Minister David Cameron continues to categorically reject Juncker as the next president of the European Commission. Yet a majority in the European Parliament supports the former Luxembourg prime minister. The European Council, made up of EU heads of state and government, has the power of nomination, but the body is divided. » | SPIEGEL Staff | Thursday, June 19, 2014

Juni 2014

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: Cardiff medical student Nasser Muthana, 20, is identified as a Briton at the centre of a campaign to recruit would-be jihadists to Iraq and Syria
An aspiring Cardiff medical student was last night identified as the Briton at the centre of a campaign by an Islamic terror group to recruit would-be jihadists to Iraq and Syria.

Nasser Muthana, 20, appeared in a propaganda video by the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham [Isis] urging others to join him.

His father, Ahmed Muthana, told The Daily Telegraph last night that Nasser’s 17-year-old brother, Aseel, was fighting alongside him. He claimed his sons were “brainwashed” in Britain.

Mr Muthana said watching footage of his son had made him cry. "I wish I could hold him, hold his hand, ask him to come back," he said.

"As a father I give a message, not only to Nasser, to all the people that go from Britain to Syria to fight please stop. Come back home." » | Tom Whitehead, Claire Duffin, Philip Sherwell and Richard Spencer | Friday, June 20, 2014

Spain Moves to Protect Juan Carlos from Paternity Suits

Juan Carlos lost his immunity from prosecution when he passed
the throne on to his son, Felipe
BBC: Spain's politicians admitted Friday that they are rushing to pass new legislation to shield former King Juan Carlos from two paternity suits.

Juan Carlos, 76, lost his immunity from prosecution after handing power to his son, Felipe, following a 39-year reign.

A senior politician said amendments would be added to a package of judicial reforms so that only Spain's Supreme Court can hear cases against him.

Two separate paternity suits were filed against Juan Carlos in 2012.

Alberto Sola Jimenez from Spain's Catalonia region and Ingrid Jeanne Satiau, a Belgian national, both claim to be the former king's children.

His legal immunity meant that the suits were not processed at the time but the cases could now be brought again in ordinary courts. » | Friday, June 20, 2014

Britons Fighting for Isis in Recruitment Video

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: Three jihadists apparently from Britain urge others to martyr themselves as they head for Iraq

British jihadists are encouraged [sic] more young Muslims to head to Syria and Iraq to martyr themselves in a chilling new recruitment video for the terror group Isis.

The men urge their fellow countrymen to “answer the call” and to “fight for Allah”, while one claims “you are going to die anyway”.

Posted online on Thursday, they also claim they are about to cross the border from Syria in to [sic] Iraq to fight there – the clearest indication yet that Britons are involved in the renewed Iraqi civil conflict.

One even claims they are ready to take the fight to Jordan or Lebanon.

Islamic Army of Iraq Founder: Isis and Sunni Islamists Will March on Baghdad

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: Exclusive: Founder of Islamic Army of Iraq who was once described by the US as a top terrorist target, explains how the fight against 'American or Iranian occupation’ has united Isis and other Sunni Islamists in the Battle for Baghdad

A top commander of the Sunni insurgency in Iraq has told The Telegraph how his men are fighting alongside the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham to take back Baghdad, even if it means pushing the country to civil war.

Sheikh Ahmed al-Dabash, 47, a founder of the Islamic Army of Iraq, who fought the allied invasion in 2003, has told how thousands of his men are participating in the Isis-led insurgency that swept across northern Iraq, and which now threatens the gates of the capital.

The Islamic Army, however, does not share the same extremist ideology of Isis, Mr Dabash said in an exclusive interview with The Telegraph, and raised the prospect of his faction one day turning its guns on their jihadist comrades.

“If Maliki [the Iraqi prime minister] does not step down, then there is no doubt that we are moving on Baghdad,” said Mr Dabash. “We will go all the way.” » | Ruth Sherlock, and Carol Malouf in Erbil | Friday, June 20, 2014
