Paris Police Station Attacker Lived in German Refugee Shelter

THE SUNDAY TELEGRAPH: Revelation raises futher questions about country's liberal stance on refugees

A man who attacked a Paris police station last week had lived in a centre for asylum-seekers in Germany, German investigators say, a finding likely to fuel criticism of Chancellor Angela Merkel's liberal stance towards war refugees.

The individual was shot dead by French police on Thursday after he tried to storm a police station in northern Paris, brandishing a meat cleaver and wearing a fake suicide vest.

The assault took place exactly one year since the start of a series of jihadist attacks in France, marked by the killing of 12 people at the Charlie Hebdo satirical magazine on January 7 2015.

On Saturday, German investigators assisting the probe into the police-station attack raided an apartment at a shelter for asylum-seekers in Recklinghausen, in the west of the country.

Their statement gave no other details except to say no indications were found that other attacks had been planned.

A source close to the matter told AFP that the suspect had been registered as an asylum-seeker. » | AFP | Sunday, January 10, 2016

Too Little, Too Late! Germany: Merkel Backs Stronger Deportation Laws After Cologne Sexual Assaults

German Chancellor Angela Merkel backed stronger deportation laws in regards to prosecuting those suspected of committing sexual assault in Cologne on New Year's Eve during a presser in Mainz, Saturday, stating that even those asylum seekers who have been given suspended sentences should leave Germany.

Hungary Says Migrant Influx to Europe Must Be Stopped Altogether

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán
THE TELEGRAPH: Hungarian prime minister calls for fences to be built on Greece's northern border to stem flow of refugees

Hungary’s prime minister on Friday said that the flow of refugees and migrants pouring into Europe must be halted altogether, not just reduced, and called for new border fences to be built in northern Greece.

Viktor Orban, who has maintained one of the hardest lines of any European leader against the unprecedented influx, called for the building of what he called a “European defence line” on Greece’s borders with Bulgaria and Macedonia.

He told Hungarian state radio that stopping the flow of migrants - the biggest refugee crisis in Europe since the Second World War - would be “the decisive issue of 2016”. » | Nick Squires, Rome | Friday, Janury 8, 2016

German Women Report String of Sexual Assaults by 'Arab and North African Men'

THE TELEGRAPH: Mayor of Cologne to investigate "outrageous" series of New Year's Eve attacks on women by large gangs of men “of Arab or North African appearance”

Police in Germany are investigating an alarming series of sexual assaults on women trying to celebrate the New Year by large groups of single men “of Arab or North African appearance”.

Authorities in the city of Cologne are to hold a crisis meeting on Tuesday after police described a group of some 1,000 men who took over the area around the main station on New Year’s Eve.

Women were robbed, groped, and had their underwear torn from their bodies, while couples had fireworks thrown at them.

Police have received 90 criminal complaints, around a quarter of them for sexual assault, including one case of rape.

Police in Hamburg say there was a series of similar incidents in the city’s Reeperbahn red-light area. Witnesses described groups of five to 15 men of who “hunted” women in the streets.

In Cologne, the attacks took place around the main station, opposite the cathedral, a traditional gathering spot to see in the New Year. » | Justin Huggler, Berlin | Tuesday, January 5, 2015

Czech President: Migrants Should Be Fighting Isis, Not 'Invading' Europe

Milos Zeman's Christmas message was criticised
by the Czech prime minister
THE GUARDIAN: Milos Zeman says children, the old and sick deserve compassion but young single men fleeing Middle East should stay behind and take up arms

The Czech president, Milos Zeman, has called the movement of refugees into Europe “an organised invasion” and declared that young men from Syria and Iraq should stay in their countries to “take up arms” against Isis.

“I am profoundly convinced that we are facing an organised invasion and not a spontaneous movement of refugees,” said Zeman in his Christmas message to the Czech Republic.

Compassion was “possible” for refugees who were old or sick, and for children, he said but not for young men who should be back home fighting against jihadists.

“A large majority of the illegal migrants are young men in good health and single. I wonder why these men are not taking up arms to go fight for the freedom of their countries against the Islamic State,” said Zeman, who was elected Czech president in early 2013.

Fleeing their war-torn countries only served to strengthen Isis, he said. » | Agence France-Presse in Prague | Sunday, December 27, 2015

'Secret' German Plan to Resettle 500,000 Syrian Refugees across Europe Unveiled This Week

EXPRESS: SECRET plans to bring up to 500,000 Syrian refugees into the European Union (EU) from Turkey are to be unveiled by Germany this week.

According to the Hungarian prime minister, EU and Turkish leaders are set to announce a behind-the-scenes agreement to resettle hundreds of thousands of people displaced by the war in Syria.

It is not known how many of the 500,000 will arrive in Britain, but fears have been raised that a significant number could be drawn to the UK by its relatively generous welfare system.

It comes just days after the EU agreed a €3billion (£2.1bn) funding package for Turkey in return for their help in stemming the flow of migrants passing through on their way to Europe.

Hungary's PM Viktor Orban warned of a "nasty surprise" for Europeans when the deal is announced in the coming days.

He said: "The issue [of resettlement] will be a hot potato in the coming period because even though this could be kept in a semi-secret state...someone somewhere - I think in Berlin this week - will announce that 400,000-500,000 Syrian refugees could be brought straight from Turkey to the EU.

"This nasty surprise still awaits Europeans." » | Tom Batchelor | Wednesday, December 2, 2015

German Council of Jews Calls for Limit on Migrant Influx Because They Come from ‘Islamic Cultures Where Hatred of Jews and Intolerance Are an Integral Part’

MAIL ONLINE: Central Council of Jews says Germany should limit number of migrants / Add many come from cultures where Jewish religion is not tolerated / They fear a growing risk of anti-Semitism from Middle Eastern migrants / But human rights activists have criticised their comments on migration

A Jewish organisation in Germany has called for a limit to be placed on migrants saying they often come from cultures where there is a hatred of Jews.

The Central Council of Jews in Germany warned of growing anti-Semitism explaining many migrants come from Islamic countries where there is an intolerance to the Jewish religion.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel's government has opened the doors to asylum seekers fleeing conflict in Syria, and arrivals from the war-torn country and other trouble spots are expected to reach one million this year.

And the council's president Josef Schuster told Die Welt daily: 'Sooner or later we won't have a choice but to set an upper limit. » | Jennifer Newton for Mail Online | Monday, November 23, 2015

Interview: ‘All the Terrorists Are Migrants’

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán on the balcony of his office
at the Hungarian Parliament, November 19.
POLITICO: Viktor Orbán on how to protect Europe from terror, save Schengen, and get along with Putin’s Russia.

BUDAPEST — “Of course it’s not accepted, but the factual point is that all the terrorists are basically migrants,” says Viktor Orbán. “The question is when they migrated to the European Union.”

In his office at the Hungarian parliament, the prime minister points toward the flowing Danube. In another era, an aide notes, the Turks followed this river into the heart of Europe. Behind Orbán hang two maps: One shows a short stretch of Hungary’s border with Croatia and another gives a panoramic view of the Balkans toward Turkey, from where hundreds of thousands of migrants have made their way north this year.

In a wide-ranging 90-minute interview a week after the Paris terrorist attacks, Orbán lays out his prescriptions for Europe’s ailments: An impenetrable external border to boost security and save the Schengen treaty on passport-less travel within the EU; a new EU constitutional convention that strengthens the power of nation states and weakens Brussels; and normalized relations with Russia.

Thinking of Paris and its aftermath, the Hungarian leader posits an “overwhelming logical” connection between terrorism and the movement of Muslims into Europe — in the last few months as well as over recent decades — that to him and many Europeans is “an obvious fact,” whether “you like it or not.”

“The majority of our leaders in the West deny the fact,” he adds. That denial of the “obvious” — which the Hungarian leader blames on political correctness run amok — destabilizes European politics by increasing “the gap between the leaders and the people.” Read on and comment » | Matthew Kaminski | Monday, November 23, 2015

Germany Investigates Suspected Terrorists Posing as Migrants

THE TELEGRAPH: Migrants pose a domestic security threat as thousands continue to enter Germany, says the German police chief

Germany is examining 10 cases of refugees accused of being a member of a terror organisation or taking part in war crimes abroad in an admission by the country’s police chief that will raise fears of terrorists among migrants.

Holger Muench, head of the BKA federal police, said that the influx of refugees posed a domestic security threat as migrants continued to cross into the country.

More than 8,000 streamed over the Austrian border to Bavaria on Wednesday and officials believe up to 800,000 migrants could enter the country by the end of year. Some predict it could be as high as one million.

Many of the migrants coming to Europe via the western Balkans route through central and eastern Europe are from war zones in the Middle East. Those fleeing to Germany were encouraged by Angela Merkel’s welcoming comments earlier this year, saying that Syrians would be given refugee status. » | Raziye Akkoc, and Melanie Hall, Berlin | Thursday, October 29, 2015

Eurotunnel Services Suspended as Migrants Storm Tunnel

THE TELEGRAPH: Eurotunnel services were suspended after a "large and co-ordinated" group" of migrants stormed the tracks, services won't resume until after 10am

Eurotunnel services were suspended on Saturday after more than 200 migrants broke into its French terminal in a “massive and organised” assault.

Passenger and freight services through the tunnel were halted for several hours while French police struggled to contain the invasion and remove the migrants.

Two police officers and four migrants suffered minor injuries during scuffles, local authorities of the Pas-de-Calais region said.

Around 100 of the migrants managed to walk as far as 15 kilometres into the Channel Tunnel during the mass break-in before police intervened to stop them getting any further.

"The migrants entered the south tunnel and went quite far, around 15 kilometres," said the top official for the region, Fabienne Buccio.

A Eurotunnel spokesman described the latest incident at its Calais terminal as a "massive invasion and intrusion by a very large and co-ordinated group". » | Patrick Sawer | Saturday, October 3, 2015

'Leaving Syria Is a Big Mistake' - Not All Syrians Want to Seek Asylum

The mass exodus is of great concern to Syrians who stay behind. Many believe the number of highly qualified professionals leaving is draining Syria of its best minds. Seeking asylum elsewhere also means separation from families.
