Can the UAE Recover from the Iran War?
How Trump's Plan to End the Iran War Differs from Netanyahu | Richard Spencer
Mar 20, 2026 | “Even if Trump did voluntarily and wholeheartedly go into this war, they might have different visions of how to end it, and that’s becoming an important point.”
Amid growing signs the US and Israel are not aligned on their aims for the Iran war, The Times’s Richard Spencer lays out the “two very different ways” Trump and Netanyahu are campaigning to proceed with in the conflict.

Is Russian Oil Headed for Cuba, Testing the U.S. Blockade?
THE NEW YORK TIMES: A Russian oil tanker is being closely tracked to see if it will challenge the Trump administration’s blockade on Cuba.
A Russian tanker full of oil is moving through the Atlantic Ocean and drawing scrutiny to see if it is heading to Cuba, a potential test of the U.S. oil blockade of the island, according to shipping data and industry analysts.
The ultimate destination of the tanker is still unknown. But if Russia is attempting to send oil to Cuba, as some analysts suspect, it could represent a critical lifeline for the Cuban government — and a new potential showdown between two superpowers over the small island nation.
Cuba has not received a significant shipment of fuel since Jan. 9, soon after the United States captured Venezuela’s president and took control of its oil exports, which once largely powered Cuba.
That is causing a severe crisis for Cuba. The Trump administration has threatened other nations not to send fuel, hoping to choke Cuba’s government into submission.
The tanker, called the Anatoly Kolodkin and owned by the Russian government, is carrying an estimated 730,000 barrels of crude oil, which analysts estimate could buy Cuba weeks of energy. » | Christiaan Triebert and Jack Nicas | The reporters analyzed ship-tracking data and satellite images and spoke to oil-shipping analysts for this article. | Thursday, March 19, 2026

“Brazen Aggression!” Norman Finkelstein vs Jonathan Conricus on Israel-Lebanon Operation + Iran War
Mar 19, 2026 | Israel has launched a ground operation in Lebanon, opening a major second front in its war against Iran and its proxies - raising the stakes in an already volatile region.
While the risks of escalation are enormous, some argue the potential strategic gains for Israel are just as significant: reduced threats from hostile neighbours, stronger ties with Gulf states, and an even more dominant position in the region militarily and politically.
As the conflict intensifies, questions are mounting over the role of the United States. President Donald Trump, who campaigned on a promise of peace, now faces criticism for backing a costly and controversial war - one that could carry serious political consequences at home.
At the same time, divisions are growing across political and media circles, with prominent voices fiercely debating the motivations behind the war and the extent to which U.S. interests align with Israel’s objectives.
Piers Morgan is joined by political scientist Professor John Mearsheimer for his analysis on the conflict. Piers then speaks to activist Norman Finkelstein and retired lieutenant colonel and IDF international spokesman Jonathan Conricus.

Iran Says It Will Show ‘Zero Restraint’ If Energy Infrastructure Is Targeted Again
THE GUARDIAN: Foreign minister issues warning after Israeli attack on South Pars gasfield and as Qatar reels from retaliatory strike
Iran said on Thursday it would show “zero restraint” if its energy infrastructure was targeted again as Qatar revealed that almost a fifth of its liquefied natural gas export capacity had been knocked out in an Iranian strike that is likely to have a years-long impact.
The warning, delivered by the Iranian foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, followed Israel’s attack on Iran’s massive South Pars gasfield – which it shares with Qatar – which triggered Iranian retaliatory strikes on Qatar’s Ras Laffan gas complex and other Gulf neighbours, sending stock markets tumbling globally and triggering sharp increases in gas prices.
Ras Laffan supplies about 20% of the world’s liquefied natural gas. Israel also confirmed on Thursday that the Bazan Group refinery in Haifa had been hit and damaged in a claimed Iranian strike.
Araghchi said in a post on X: “Our response to Israel’s attack on our infrastructure employed FRACTION of our power. The ONLY reason for restraint was respect for requested de-escalation. ZERO restraint if our infrastructures are struck again.” » | Peter Beaumont, Lorenzo Tondo in Jerusalem and Hannah Ellis-Petersen in Dubai | Thursday, March 19, 2026

Iran War: Trump White House at ‘Panic Stations’ over Strait of Hormuz Crisis
Mar 19, 2026 | Saudi Arabia is warning it may retaliate against Iran after fresh threats to oil and gas infrastructure as Donald Trump’s administration desperately tries to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
With strikes hitting key energy facilities across the Gulf, this conflict is no longer just military - it’s an economic war with global consequences.
So how far could this escalate? And what does it mean for energy prices, inflation and the world economy?
On this episode of The Fourcast Matt Frei is joined by The Economists defence editor Shashank Joshi and Channel 4 News’ economics editor Helia Ebrahimi.

Farage Called Welsh People ‘Foreign Speakers’ in Paid-for Video Message
THE GUARDIAN: Reform UK leader’s remarks in Cameo clip risk damaging party’s ambitions in upcoming Welsh elections
Nigel Farage described Welsh people as “foreign speakers” in a paid-for personalised video message that could prove awkward for Reform UK in forthcoming elections in the country.
Farage made the remarks in a video he was paid to make on Cameo, a personalised video platform, to celebrate a wedding.
The video was unearthed by the Guardian among a tranche of more than 4,000 clips the Reform leader has produced on the platform, which enables public figures and celebrities to sell recorded messages for members of the public.
Farage’s use of the platform has already come under intense scrutiny after a Guardian investigation revealed he had recorded videos supporting a rioter, repeating extremist slogans, and endorsing a neo-Nazi event. » | Henry Dyer and Michael Goodier | Thursday, March 19, 2026

Five New Meningitis Cases Found in Kent | BBC News
Mar 18, 2026 | Five new meningitis cases have been found in Kent, UK, taking the total number of confirmed and suspected cases to 20.
Officials are "proactively managing" the spread of the infection, adding the "general risk is low, even if the disease itself is extremely serious", Health Secretary Wes Streeting told the BBC.
Two people have died - a 21-year-old university student and Juliette, a sixth form pupil.
Susan Hopkins, chief executive of the UK Health Security Agency, said there was an "explosive nature" to the outbreak, while deputy chief medical officer Dr Thomas Waite said it was the quickest growing outbreak he had seen in his career.
A targeted vaccine programme for 5,000 students is being set up at the University of Kent in Canterbury.

Trump Threatens to ‘Massively Blow Up’ Major Iranian Gas Field after Strikes in Qatar | BBC News
Mar 19, 2026 | US President Donald Trump threatened to “massively blow up” a major Iranian gas field, after Iran attacked Qatar's Ras Laffan in retaliation to an Israeli attack on its South Pars gas field.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the US "knew nothing" of Israel's strike, and threatened an escalation if Iran attacks Qatar again.
If Iran does strike Qatar again, Trump said the US will "will massively blow up the entirety of the South Pars Gas Field at an amount of strength and power that Iran has never seen or witnessed before".
Iran's South Pars is part of the world's largest natural gas field, with both Qatar and Iran operating facilities in the area - Israel is yet to comment.
The price of gas has risen sharply in the UK and Europe following the attack on Qatar's Ras Laffan.

Leo Varadkar: LGBTQ+ Rights in Europe Face ‘Chill Wind’ from East and West
THE GUARDIAN: Ireland’s former taoiseach warns of conservative Russian influence and says US is now ‘off the pitch’ under Trump

LGBTQ+ rights in Europe are caught in a “chill wind” from east and west as Vladimir Putin’s Russia exports its conservative agenda and the “Americans are off the pitch” under Donald Trump, Ireland’s former taoiseach Leo Varadkar has said.
Varadkar, who in 2017 became Ireland’s first out gay prime minister, said Europe needed to “step up” to avoid the continent becoming further squeezed by global forces seeking to chip away at recent progress.
“I’m afraid of where things are going,” he said. “Europe is still the light when it comes to human rights and democracy and freedom of expression, given what else is going on in the world – but it’s a flickering light.” » | Ashifa Kassam | European community affairs correspondent | Thursday, March 19, 2026
Trump’s negative influence on LGBTQ+ diminishing rights can be blamed particularly on Goldilocks himself. The man is a fossil and a hypocrite, especially as he likes “pussy” a lot and especially because he is known to be a convicted sex offender. Is a person loving another person of the same gender as bad as that? Here’s a video clip of Trump talking about pussy. That he could be elected and then re-elected to the highest office in the land after all that beggars belief! As for Orbán, he’s just a dangerous Russophile who wants to turn the clock back. These tw*ts (use the vowel of your own choosing) might intimidate others; but they won’t intimidate me. I am absolutely and totally secure in my sexual identity and no Trump or Orbán will ever change that! It is imperative that we fight this benightedness to the end! — © Mark Alexander

Palestinian Man Recounts Brutal Sexual Assault by Israeli Settlers
THE NEW YORK TIMES: The man said his attackers stripped him naked, beat him and zip-tied his genitalia, an account corroborated by family members and a rights activist who were also beaten.

Israeli settlers beat a Palestinian man in the occupied West Bank, stripped him naked, tied his arms and legs and then zip-tied his penis, he, his family members and another witness said on Wednesday.
“I thought I was going to die,” the man, Suhaib Abualkebash, a 29-year-old shepherd, told The New York Times. “I thought this was the end.”
Several family members and an American woman corroborated details of Mr. Abualkebash’s account, saying they witnessed the sexual assault on Friday by several men among a group of more than 20 settlers who marauded though a Bedouin encampment. The relatives and the American said they had been beaten, too, adding that the assailants had kicked and slapped children during the attack. Family members also shared copies of reports they had filed to the Israeli police.
Israeli settlers have been waging an escalating campaign of violence and land theft against Palestinians across much of the West Bank. It has intensified as Israeli attitudes toward Palestinians have hardened since the Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, and the war that ensued. The attacks have increased while international attention has been focused on the U.S.-Israel war with Iran. Settlers have killed seven West Bank Palestinians so far this year, six of them since the war began on Feb. 28. » | David M. Halbfinger and Fatima AbdulKarim | Reporting from Khirbet Humsa in the West Bank | Wednesday, March 18, 2026
This is truly a heart-rending story. Is there no limit or end to the cruelty in this world? Are people now totally bereft of compassion and feeling for others?
Many years ago, when I worked in the Middle East, I had many Palestinian colleagues. I have very fond memories of them, too. In work, I spent a lot of time with them. They were gentle and kind colleagues, always willing to help when help was needed. Even on weekends if, for example, I needed help moving house. And they would never take money for the assistance they gave me; in fact, they couldn’t do enough for you. I shall never forget their kindness toward me. So, when I read of Palestinians suffering like this, it touches and moves me greatly. — © Mark Alexander

Giovanni Siracusa: Italian Easter Cake – Ciambella rustica
Mar 18, 2026 | Italian Easter Cake (Made with meats and cheeses!)
This is what Easter looks like at our house! ciambella rustica is a savory Italian cake that somehow always ends up in the center of the table every Easter. I’m not even sure if it’s an appetizer, a snack, or a main course, but it’s always there, and everyone just cuts their own piece as they go.
This isn't a sweet cake; it’s a rustic, savory bread packed with Italian flavor: salami, mortadella, and provolone.
Grandmas all over Italy have their own family version of this recipe. I grew up watching my grandma "eye up" the batter until it felt right, but for this video, I’ve written everything down so you can get it perfect every time.
It’s a simple one-bowl recipe. Everything goes in, it gets a quick mix, and you’re ready to bake. If you want to bring a piece of a real Italian Easter to your table this year, this is the one.
Click here for the recipe. Then click on ‘more’.

Mar 18, 2026 | "If you've got a car that runs on petrol you should fill up as quickly as possible."
There is speculation that Trump may try to call time on the war in the coming days, but Iran is braced for impact and will not surrender "anytime soon", says senior fellow at the Middle East Institute, Brian Katulis.

Cuba Abandoned by Allies as Trump Considers Takeover
Mar 17, 2026 | “They’re all hamstrung.”
Cuba’s neighbours Brazil, Mexico and Colombia, as well as it’s traditional allies in China and Russia have been quiet as the US has stopped Venezuelan oil going to Cuba, leading Trump to consider whether he could ‘take’ Cuba, says Jon Bonfiglio, Latin America correspondent.

Iran Threatens Gulf Energy Facilities after Israeli Attack on Its Largest Gasfield
THE GUARDIAN: Revolutionary Guards say they will strike infrastructure in Saudi Arabia, UAE and Qatar after South Pars field hit
Iran has threatened to attack energy infrastructure across the Gulf region in retaliation for Israeli strikes on its largest gasfield, the first targeted attacks on its fossil fuel production since the war began.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guards have threatened counterstrikes on several energy facilities across Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Qatar “in the coming hours” after state media reports that missiles had targeted its gas facilities at the giant South Pars field, the largest gas reserves in the world.
The strikes on Iran’s South Pars gasfield, which it shares with Qatar, were widely reported in Israeli media to have been carried out by Israel with the consent of the US.
The attack against the heart of Iran’s gas infrastructure marks a key escalation in US and Israeli military operations. The two countries have until now largely spared Iran’s oil and gas sector and helped to keep a lid on the global oil price surge. » | Jillian Ambrose | Wednesday, March 18, 2026

Iran Is Playing Chess, Trump Doesn't Know Where the Board Is | David Hearst | UNAPOLOGETIC
Mar 16, 2026 | David Hearst, editor in chief of Middle East Eye, appeared on the UNAPOLOGETIC podcast to discuss how Donald Trump may be losing control of the war he started against Iran.
When will the war end? Will Benjamin Netanyahu and Trump achieve their goals? What will happen to the Iranian government? What is the future of relations between the GCC and Iran? Could the conflict escalate into a regional war - and could Israel resort to using a nuclear weapon if it finds itself losing?

Netanyahu Hopes Strikes on Iran Will Lead to Uprising and Regime Change
THE NEW YORK TIMES: Israeli attacks have targeted the command centers of Iran’s repressive, internal security forces in hopes that Iranians will overthrow their rulers. Some see that as wishful thinking.
Israeli attacks on Iran have been targeting the country’s internal security services as part of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s strategy to destabilize the authoritarian government and create the conditions for a popular uprising.
Israel has already killed Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and announced on Tuesday that it killed the country’s top security official, Ali Larijani. Beyond that, the Israeli military has been heavily bombing the security forces that have quashed wave after wave of anti-government protests in Iran.
Some former Israeli military officials dismissed Mr. Netanyahu’s strategy as unrealistic, arguing that Iran’s internal security services are too deeply entrenched and powerful. Other experts, however, argue that Israel should try to bring about a change in leadership, while acknowledging that airstrikes alone will not be enough without a popular uprising.
Mr. Netanyahu has said that Israel’s air campaign has delivered “crushing blows” to Iran’s security apparatus and will create “optimal” conditions for Iranians to oust their government.
“I’m telling the Iranian people,” Mr. Netanyahu said at a news conference last week. “The moment you can come out for freedom is getting closer. We are standing beside you and helping you. But at the end of the day, it’s up to you.” » | Adam Rasgon, Ronen Bergman and David M. Halbfinger | Adam Rasgon and David M.
