Hundreds of Gunshot Eye Injuries Found in One Iranian Hospital amid Brutal Crackdown on Protests

THE GUARDIAN: Doctors in Tehran tell of overwhelmed medical staff as violent crackdown intensifies

An ophthalmologist in Tehran has documented more than 400 eye injuries from gunshots in a single hospital, as overwhelmed medical staff struggle to cope with the toll of an increasingly violent crackdown on nationwide protests by Iranian authorities.

Three doctors, in messages forwarded to the Guardian on Monday, described overwhelmed hospitals and emergency wings overflowing with protesters who had been shot. Medical staff said the gunshot wounds were mostly concentrated on protesters’ eyes and heads – a tactic that rights groups said authorities used against demonstrators in the country’s 2022 Woman, Life, Freedom protests.

“[Security forces] are deliberately shooting at the head and the eyes. They want to damage the head and the eyes so they can no longer see, the same thing they did in [2022],” said a doctor in Tehran. The doctor added that many of the patients had to have their eyes removed and were blinded. » | Deepa Parent and William Christou | Tuesday, January 13, 2026

‘Shoot to Kill’: Accounts of Brutal Crackdown Emerge From Iran

THE NEW YORK TIMES: As many as 3,000 feared dead as witnesses describe government forces firing on unarmed protesters.

As the Iranian authorities impose a near-total communication blackout on a country convulsed by mass protests, videos and witness accounts slowly emerging suggest that the government is waging one of its deadliest crackdowns on unrest in more than a decade.

Eyewitnesses say government forces have begun opening fire, apparently with automatic weapons and at times seemingly indiscriminately, on unarmed protesters. Hospital workers say protesters had been coming in with pellet injuries but now arrive with gunshot wounds and skull fractures. One doctor called it a “mass-casualty situation.”

Despite the communications blockade, a recurring image has made its way out of Iran: rows and rows of body bags.

In videos uploaded by opposition activists on social media, families can be seen sobbing as they huddle together over bloodied corpses in unzipped bags. And in footage aired on Iranian state television, a morgue official, sheathed in blue scrubs, stands amid bags neatly arranged along the floor of a white room, under glaring fluorescent lights. » | Erika Solomon, Farnaz Fassihi, Sanam Mahoozi and Sanjana Varghese | Tuesday, January 13, 2026

ICE is Now Literally Breaking Down People’s Doors in 1930s Gestapo-style Raids

13 Jan 2026 | The scene in Minneapolis looks eerily familiar to 1930s Germany. In the aftermath of ICE’s execution of Renee Good, the ICE gestapo has threatened, harassed, assaulted, and terrorized countless others in Minneapolis and elsewhere. To boot, hordes of ICE agents are now going door to door in Minneapolis just like JD Vance said they would. In this video we’ll talk about the parallels between Germany’s 1930s gestapo and ICE. We’ll also explain why they’re ramping up their repression and why this is a ‘hair on fire’ moment for the country.

Democracy Now! "Empire in Decline": Historian Alfred McCoy on U.S. Aggression in Venezuela, Iran & Beyond

13 Jan 2026 | As President Trump threatens Iran, Venezuela, Mexico, Greenland and more, renowned historian Alfred McCoy says the United States is "an empire in decline," following a predictable pattern of militarism abroad and political instability at home as it loses power and influence on the world stage.

"American politics become increasingly contorted and irrational," says McCoy. "I think the thing to do is to realize that we are an empire in decline, … and it will continue for another decade or two, until American power finally slips away."

McCoy just published his latest book, Cold War on Five Continents: A Global History of Empire and Espionage, on the impact of U.S.-Soviet imperial proxy wars in Africa, Asia and Latin America.

Julio Iglesias Accused of Sexual Assault by Two Female Former Employees

THE GUARDIAN: Spanish singer allegedly subjected women to ‘inappropriate touching, insults and humiliation’

The Spanish singer Julio Iglesias has been accused of sexual assault by two female former employees who say they were subjected “to inappropriate touching, insults and humiliation … in an atmosphere of control and constant harassment”.

The two women – a domestic worker and a physical therapist who were employed at Iglesias’s Caribbean mansions in the Dominican Republic and the Bahamas – allege the assaults took place in 2021.

The alleged assaults came to light at the end of a three-year joint investigation by the Spanish news site elDiario.es and the Spanish-language TV network Univision Noticias, which collected testimonies from 15 former employees who worked for the 82-year-old singer between the late 1990s and 2023.

“These interviews describe the women’s conditions of isolation, labour disputes, the hierarchical structure of the staff, and the tense atmosphere created by Iglesias’s short-tempered character,” elDiario.es said in its report on Tuesday. » | Sam Jones in Madrid | Tuesday, January 13, 2026

Spanish Author Lambasts Linguistic Academy over Social Media Influence

THE GUARDIAN: Arturo Pérez-Reverte says ‘an illiterate pundit, YouTuber or influencer’ has more impact than a literary prize winner

One of Spain’s best-known novelists has launched a withering attack on the country’s leading linguistic authority, saying it ignores the opinions of writers when it comes to changes in language, and that its “anything goes Taliban” yields instead to social media, commentators and influencers.

Arturo Pérez-Reverte used a column in Monday’s El Mundo to accuse the Spanish Royal Academy (RAE) – of which he is a member – of failing to live up to the mission laid out in its celebrated motto of “cleaning, fixing and giving shine” to the Spanish language.

These days “an illiterate pundit, YouTuber or influencer can have more linguistic influence than a Cervantes prize winner”, he said. » | Sam Jones in Madrid | Tuesday, January 13, 2026

Global Central Banks Offer ‘Full Solidarity’ to US Fed’s Powell amid Trump Threats

THE GUARDIAN: Nine governors including Bank of England’s Andrew Bailey and ECB’s Christine Lagarde say independence is critical

Global central banks have issued an extraordinary joint statement offering “full solidarity” to the US Federal Reserve chair, Jerome Powell, in the face of the latest threat to his independence from Donald Trump’s White House.

“The independence of central banks is a cornerstone of price, financial and economic stability in the interest of the citizens that we serve. It is therefore critical to preserve that independence, with full respect for the rule of law and democratic accountability,” the statement said.

It was signed by nine central bank governors including the Bank of England governor, Andrew Bailey, and the chair of the European Central Bank, Christine Lagarde. It was coordinated by the Basel-based Bank for International Settlements, which added its chair and general manager to the signatories.

Other signatories to the unprecedented statement include the central bank governors of Australia, Sweden, Denmark, Switzerland, Brazil, South Korea and Canada. More names are expected to be added later on Tuesday.

They pay testament to Powell’s “integrity” and “unwavering commitment to the public interest”, calling him a “respected colleague who is held in the highest regard by all who have worked with him”. » | Heather Stewart, Economics editor | Tuesday, January 13, 2026
