Nicolas Sarkozy Says He Wants to ‘Prove His Innocence’ as He Is Released from Prison

THE GUARDIAN: Former French president, who said his three weeks in jail had been a ‘nightmare’, will serve rest of sentence outside pending appeal

Nicolas Sarkozy has said he wants to “prove his innocence” after being released from prison while he appeals against his conviction for criminal conspiracy over a scheme to obtain election campaign funds from Libya.

After 20 days in jail that he had earlier described as “gruelling” and a “nightmare”, the former French president was driven away from La Santé prison in Paris on Monday accompanied by his wife, the singer Carla Bruni-Sarkozy.

The 70-year-old wrote on social media: “The law has been applied. I will now prepare for an appeal. My energy is focused solely on proving my innocence. The truth will prevail.” » | Angelique Chrisafis in Paris | Monday, November 10, 2025

» | Raphael Schmeller | Sonntag, 9. Book Burnings: How the Nazis First Burned Books and Then People

May 7, 2023 | Book burnings - in the past and the present - stand as one of the most powerful symbols of intolerance and censorship. On May 10, 1933, only a few months after Hitler's rise to power, tens of thousands of books were burned in more than twenty German cities. Most books were works by Jewish authors. But works by political dissidents were also blacklisted. Numerous writers were forced to go into exile, while many of those who stayed in Germany were imprisoned or murdered. The Nazis replaced the Weimar Republic’s once vibrant culture with Nazi propaganda and a carefully tailored concept of what they wanted “German culture” to be.

In this episode of "Arts Unveiled", DW History Reporter Susanne Spröer sets forth to investigate why the idea to burn books took hold of universities across Germany in 1933. What role did the symbolism of fire play? Which authors were blacklisted? What happened to them afterwards? And what do young people today think about these acts of cultural destruction?

Antisemitismus 1938 - Verbotene Bilder vom Pogrom | Terra X

November 9: A Day of Destiny?

Nov 8, 2025 | Why is November 9th such a significant date in Germany and what does it have to do with German democracy? In this History Story we explore the questions: Why did the Nazis choose November 9th, of all days, for marches, festivities - and for their first major violent attack on Jews, known internationally as "Kristallnacht" or "The Night of Broken Glass"? How did the date come to symbolize new beginnings, and freedom? And why is November 9th a day of mourning for so many people? The date, known in Germany as “Schicksalstag” or “Day of Destiny”, has been instrumentalized to overwrite history and decide the fates of German citizens.

We talk to historian and author Wolfgang Niess, who in his book "Der 9. November - Die Deutschen und ihr Schicksalstag", explains the background and historical context of this day. Israeli filmmaker Yael Reuveny shares the feelings and associations that November 9th evokes and how Jewish people feel living in Germany. For many years, Berlin was a refuge for Israelis dissatisfied with their home country's politics. However, since the October 7th multi-front terror attacks on Israel by the militant group Hamas and the ensuing Israeli bombardment of Gaza, Germany is experiencing a wave of antisemitic crimes. Although state policy upholds the protection of Jewish life, antisemitism is nonetheless deeply rooted, and on the rise.

German democracy - a fragile achievement. It's been fought for time and again in Germany. On November 9th, we are reminded of the need to remain vigilant in its defence.

Andrew Asked to Appear before US Congress for Questioning on Jeffrey Epstein Links | BBC News

Nov 7, 2025 | Andrew Mountbatten Windsor has been asked by Democrats in US Congress to answer questions as part of its investigation into paedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein.

Members of the House Oversight Committee wrote to Andrew in a letter addressed to Royal Lodge, the Windsor mansion from which he was ordered to move when he was stripped of his title as a prince on 30 October.

The committee does not have the power to compel Andrew to appear in front of them, but said it intends to ask questions related to Epstein's network and associates based on the pair's "longstanding" friendship.

Andrew was stripped of his titles following months of pressure over his ties to Epstein, but he has always denied wrongdoing.

I am no defender of the former Prince Andrew. His behaviour has been despicable. But this comes over as very hypocritical to me. These Congressmen/women are so quick to call for Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor to testify under oath, but let their own president completely off the hook. The witch-hunt should begin at home and then move on. Trump, if he is honest under oath, will surely be able to shed much light on the seedy goings on in these sex orgies. Then, by all means bring Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor into the ‘inquisition’! But start with the most powerful man in the world. He must surely know far more than he is letting on. — © Mark Alexander

Death of Iranian Activist Who Burned Picture of Supreme Leader Causes Outcry

THE GUARDIAN: Iran’s police say Omid Sarlak, 22, shot himself, but fellow activists suspect he may have been killed for his views

The death of a young Iranian man who had filmed himself burning a photograph of the country’s supreme leader has sparked a war of words between state media and activists over how he died.

Government-sanctioned news websites reported that Omid Sarlak, who was in his 20s, had been found in his car on Saturday in western Iran with a gunshot wound to his head and traces of gunpowder on his hands. Iranian police said Sarlak had “died by suicide”.

But anti-government media and activists say the timing of the death, so soon after he made a public outcry against the government, raises suspicions about whether he was killed for his views.

Hours before Sarlak’s body was found, a video posted on his social media account showed him burning the photo of the Islamic Republic’s leader, Ali Khamenei. » | Deepa Parent | Saturday, November 8, 2025
