Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said that she does not believe the United States will use military force to take over the island. She called for a stronger NATO presence in the Arctic and warned that any American move on Greenland would have major implications for the alliance.

Why Is the US Quitting International Organisations? | Inside Story
9 Jan 2026 | There are yet more signs that the US is disengaging from the global order established after World War Two. President Donald Trump has ordered his administration to pull out of more than 60 agencies, half of them part of the United Nations. Trump argues that being a member of these organisations is contrary to his country's interests. The Secretary of State went as far as saying they're useless or wasteful. This move has prompted global outrage, with the UN saying its 'responsibility to deliver’ will not waver. So, where does this all leave the multilateral global order?

Iran’s Supreme Leader Signals Harsher Crackdown as Protest Movement Swells
THE GUARDIAN: Ayatollah Ali Khamenei calls protesters ‘vandals’ and ‘saboteurs’ and blames the US for instigating the unrest
Iran’s supreme leader has vowed that authorities will “not back down” in the face of growing protests, blaming the US for instigating demonstrations that started over economic conditions and have since expanded to calls for political reform.
In his first speech since the protests started 13 days ago, the supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, signalled on Friday that a greater crackdown was coming. He described protesters as “vandals” and “saboteurs”, and accused them of working on behalf of foreign agendas.
Protesters are “ruining their own streets to make the president of another country happy … because he said he would come to their aid”, Khamenei said – a reference to Donald Trump, who has threatened American intervention in Iran if authorities kill protesters.
The US president, in an interview with Fox News on Thursday, suggested the supreme leader was preparing to flee Iran. “He’s looking to go somewhere. It’s getting very bad,” Trump said.
In a separate speech, the head of Iran’s judiciary, Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei, said consequences for demonstrators would be “decisive, maximum and without any legal leniency”. » | William Christou and Deepa Parent | Friday, January 9, 2026

‘We Are Not For Sale’: Chair of Greenland’s Top Labor Union Rebukes Trump’s Call for Annexation
THE GUARDIAN: Exclusive: SIK leader Jess Berthelsen rejects Trump claim that the US needs Greenland for ‘national security’
Greenland “will not be annexed”, the longtime leader of its largest labor union has declared, refuting Donald Trump’s claims that the Arctic territory’s current status poses a national security threat to the US.
In an interview with the Guardian, Jess Berthelsen, chair of SIK, Greenland’s national trade union confederation, said people in the territory do not recognize the US president’s allegations that Russian and Chinese ships are scattered throughout its waters. “We can’t see it, we can’t recognize it and we can’t understand it,” he said.
The Trump administration has renewed its threats to seize Greenland in recent days, and claimed that officials are even considering using military force as an option, following a raid in Venezuela that culminated in the arrest and ouster of the nation’s president Nicolás Maduro, and his wife Cilia Flores. » | Michael Sainato | Friday, January 9, 2026
