THE GUARDIAN: Exclusive: Group’s open letter says Reform UK leader must take responsibility for behaviour as a schoolboy
A group of Holocaust survivors have demanded Nigel Farage tell the truth and apologise for the antisemitic comments that fellow pupils of Dulwich College allege he made toward Jewish pupils.
The Reform UK leader has said he never racially abused anyone with intent but may have engaged in “banter in a playground”.
But in a letter to Farage seen by the Guardian, the 11 survivors said: “As Holocaust survivors, we understand the danger of hateful words – because we have seen where such words lead.
“Let us be clear: praising Hitler, mocking gas chambers, or hurling racist abuse is not banter. Not in a playground. Not anywhere.
“When allegations arise about invoking Nazi attitudes toward Jewish children, the responsible response is honesty, reflection, and commitment to truth.
“So we ask you: did you say ‘Hitler was right’ and ‘gas them,’ mimicking gas chambers? Did you subject your classmates to antisemitic abuse?”
The survivors include Hedi Argent, who lost 27 members of her family in the Holocaust. Another member of the group, Simon Winston, was held in a ghetto before escaping in September 1942 and spending the rest of the war in hiding.
Another signatory is Anita Lasker-Wallfisch, who was sent to Auschwitz-Birkenau where she spent nearly a year. In October 1944, she was moved to Bergen-Belsen, where she was liberated by the British in April 1945. » | Henry Dyer and Daniel Boffey | Friday, December 5, 2025

Stricken Thomas Markle Rushed Into Intensive Care – Meghan Silent
Dec 3, 2025 | Thomas Markle, the 81-year-old father of Meghan Markle, has been rushed into intensive care after suffering a sudden medical emergency at his home in the Philippines.
According to his son, doctors warned that his life was in “imminent danger,” prompting an ambulance dash to a larger hospital where he underwent emergency surgery. He is now in the ICU, with a second operation expected to address a blood clot.
His children, Thomas Jr and Samantha, have issued emotional updates, asking the world to keep their father in their thoughts and prayers as he faces a long and difficult recovery.
Thomas Markle has endured years of serious health battles, including two heart attacks and a major stroke in 2022 which left him temporarily unable to speak.
His fragile health has been compounded by the pain of his estrangement from Meghan and the emotional strain of recent years.
As Thomas continues to fight in hospital, his family say they remain hopeful — but deeply worried. …

For My 60th Birthday, I’m Taking Up Smoking
THE SPECTATOR: It's a selfish, unhealthy decision – and a joyous, life-affirming one
Next month I will be 60. It’s an unwelcome landmark birthday as far as I’m concerned but they say that taking up a new hobby or pastime is a good way to combat the advances of old age. So I’ve decided to take up smoking.
It was either that or something physical such as cycling or jogging or walking football but, to quote Ronnie Barker in Porridge: ‘What, with these feet?’ Besides, older cyclists look ridiculous, serious runners tend to look ten years older than they really are and as for walking football… what’s the point? No, smoking is easier, more pleasurable, more relaxing and even allows me to multi-task. I can enjoy a Camel Blue while birdwatching, walking the dog or listening to Northern Soul – all of which I also plan to do more of in my sixties. » | Mark Solomons | Monday, November 14, 2022

What’s the Point in a Generational Smoking Ban?
THE SPCTATOR: With the Tobacco and Vapes Bill travelling through the House of Lords, I think it’s high time we looked at the data justifying this almost unprecedented assault on liberty. Public health lobbyists and their politicians argue that without the incoming Generational Smoking Ban, smoking would continue to be prevalent amongst young people (16-24), which is when the vast majority of smokers initiate their lifetime consumption habit. » | Maxwell Marlow | Sunday, November 9, 2025

Half of Europeans See Trump as Enemy of Europe, Survey Finds
THE GUARDIAN: Nine-country poll finds half of people believe risk of war with Russia is high and three-quarters want to stay in EU
Nearly half of Europeans see Donald Trump as “an enemy of Europe”, rather more rate the risk of war with Russia as high and more than two-thirds believe their country would not be able to defend itself in the event of such a war, a survey has found.
The nine-country poll for the Paris-based European affairs debate platform Le Grand Continent also found that nearly three-quarters of respondents wanted their country to stay in the EU, with almost as many saying leaving the union had harmed the UK.
Jean-Yves Dormagen, a political science professor and founder of the polling agency Cluster17, said: “Europe is not only facing growing risks, it is also undergoing a transformation of its historical, geopolitical and political environment. The overall picture [of the survey] portrays a Europe that is anxious, that is deeply aware of its vulnerabilities and that is struggling to project itself positively into the future.”
The polling found that an average of 48% of people across the nine countries see Trump as an outright foe – ranging from highs of 62% in Belgium and 57% in France to lows of 37% in Croatia and 19% in Poland. » | Jon Henley, Europe correspondent | Thursday, December 4, 2025
Enemy of Europe? That’s EXACTLY what Trump is! The sooner he is kicked out of office, the better! The better it will be for Europe, the better it will be for America, and the better it will be for the world. — © Mark Alexander
