Elon Musk’s Father Accused of Child Sexual Abuse
THE NEW YORK TIMES: Errol Musk has been accused of sexually abusing five of his children and stepchildren since 1993, a Times investigation found. Family members have appealed to Elon Musk for help.
Elon Musk has not been shy about putting much of his life on public display. The tech billionaire posts daily on his social network X, has cooperated with two biographies and often speaks on podcasts and at conferences.
But there is one part of his life that he has not revealed much about — his longtime estrangement from his father, Errol Musk, who has become increasingly outspoken about his family and business ventures tied to the Musk name.
A New York Times investigation found that a significant factor in Elon Musk’s rupture with his father stems from accusations against Errol Musk of child sex abuse. The allegations have repeatedly spilled over into Elon Musk’s life as relatives have contacted him for help and he has sometimes taken action to intercede, according to personal letters, emails and interviews with family members.
The family’s troubles have entangled Elon Musk in a painful three-decade multigenerational saga that continues to trail him. The fallout has kept the 54-year-old mogul tethered to South Africa, where he was born and where Errol Musk lives, even as he has built a business empire in the United States and briefly ascended to political power as a close adviser to President Trump.
The allegations against Errol Musk involve five of his children and stepchildren, whom he was accused of abusing in South Africa and California, according to police and court records, personal correspondence, social workers and interviews with family members. » | Kirsten Grind and John Eligon | Kirsten Grind reported from San Francisco. The Guardian View on Donald Trump’s Hate for Opponents: Practising Politics the Wrong Way
THE GUARDIAN — EDITORIAL: The president’s admission is more than bravado. By blurring truth and criminalising dissent, he is dismantling the US’s free-speech order from within
At Sunday’s memorial for the rightwing activist Charlie Kirk, Donald Trump paid a peculiar tribute. Having quoted Mr Kirk’s words of forgiveness, he put aside the script. “That’s where I disagreed with Charlie,” he said. “I hate my opponents, and I don’t want the best for them.” It was a stark and clarifying admission. Mr Trump does not seek to criminalise hate speech so much as to criminalise speech he hates.
The US is being dragged into a state of emergency. Speech is framed as terrorism. Satire is rebranded as enemy propaganda. Employers punish workers for personal posts. The predictable result is a chilling climate of surveillance and reprisal, in which citizens learn to keep quiet. The assassination is not just being used to police manners; it is being used to reconstruct the public square so that dissent equals disloyalty, and disloyalty is treated as a security threat.
Hannah Arendt warned of the existential peril in blurring the line between truth and lies: then truth doesn’t stand; it becomes optional. Mr Trump’s reported falsehoods about paracetamol and autism will harm mothers, stigmatise families and erode trust in medicine. But in Trumpland such costs are outweighed by the political payoff of pitting supporters against the scientific “establishment”. » | Editorial | Monday, September 22, 2025

Jimmy Kimmel’s Show to Return to ABC on Tuesday Night
THE NEW YORK TIMES: The network’s removal of Mr. Kimmel’s show last week almost immediately morphed into a flashpoint for free speech in America.
Jimmy Kimmel is coming back.
ABC said on Monday that “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” would return to its airwaves on Tuesday, ending an impasse that began last week.
“Last Wednesday, we made the decision to suspend production on the show to avoid further inflaming a tense situation at an emotional moment for our country,” the Walt Disney Company, which owns ABC, said in a statement.
“It is a decision we made because we felt some of the comments were ill-timed and thus insensitive,” the statement said. “We have spent the last days having thoughtful conversations with Jimmy, and after those conversations, we reached the decision to return the show on Tuesday.”
Disney did not say whether all ABC affiliates, some of which balked at carrying “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” last week, would carry Tuesday’s show. » | John Koblin, Brooks Barnes, Michael M. Grynbaum and Benjamin Mullin | Monday, September 22, 2025

Donald Trump has turned a one-time GREAT nation into a SHITSHOW! Nigel Farage Roundly Condemned over Plan to Abolish Indefinite Leave to Remain
THE GUARDIAN: Cross-party criticism after Reform UK leader threatens hundreds of thousands of legal immigrants with deportation
Nigel Farage has faced cross-party condemnation after threatening hundreds of thousands of legal immigrants with deportation by pledging to abolish the main route towards permanent settlement in the UK.
The Reform UK leader was roundly criticised over the principle and practicality of his proposals, with Labour figures accusing him of seeking to “break up families” and “foster division”.
At a tetchy press conference on Monday, Farage claimed the policy was aimed at stopping 800,000 people from becoming eligible for indefinite leave to remain (ILR) between 2026 and 2030.
Farage said this group – which he called the “Boriswave” because they arrived under post-Brexit changes made by Boris Johnson – tended to be young and low-skilled and were “going to be a huge burden on the state” by claiming benefits.
Speaking alongside his policy chief, Zia Yusuf, Farage pledged to abolish ILR and force people to reapply for visas every five years, with stringent salary and English language requirements and tougher rules around bringing dependants.
He left open the possibility that families in the UK could be broken up and that Ukrainians and Hongkongers who moved here using special resettlement routes could have their rights to remain revoked. » | Eleni Courea, Political correspondent | Monday, September 22, 2025

Sep 22, 2025 | In the run-up to Moldova’s crucial election on Sunday 28 September, BBC Eye Investigations has been undercover in a fake news network hoping to swing the result.
The BBC has established that posts from this one network - designed to erode confidence in the ruling government - have been seen over 20 million times on social media.
Moldovan authorities say millions in Russian cash has flooded into the country with the aim of convincing citizens to vote out the current pro-EU government. Russia denies it is interfering with Moldova's electoral process.

British-Egyptian Activist Alaa Abd el-Fattah to Be Freed from Prison
THE GUARDIAN: Reports say writer, who has served six years for liking a Facebook post, has also been given a presidential pardon
The British-Egyptian human rights activist Alaa Abd el-Fattah will be released from jail after serving six years for liking a Facebook post, Egyptian state media have reported.
Egypt’s president, Abdel Fatah al-Sisi, granted him his freedom after intensive lobbying by the UK government and pressure from Egypt’s national human rights council.
The UK prime minister, Keir Starmer, is known to have telephoned Sisi three times to lobby for Abd el-Fattah’s release. His national security adviser, Jonathan Powell, also called for his release as did the former foreign secretary David Lammy. It appears a growing warmth in British-Egyptian official relations – including over how to handle the Palestine question – may have played a role in the president’s decision.
Abd el-Fattah’s 69-year-old mother, Laila Soueif, has been admitted to hospital in London twice after going on hunger strikes to try to secure his release. The prominent activist and maths professor also held vigils outside the Foreign Office and Downing Street, saying she was prepared to die to achieve her son’s release. » | Patrick Wintour, Diplomatic editor | Monday, September 22, 2025

Democracy Now! can be supported here.
I have news for you, Mr President! This side of the Atlantic, I have never heard anyone say a good word about you! Most people I have heard speaking about you seem to despise you. At best, I have heard people laugh about you! Put that in your pipe and smoke it! Perhaps it is high time that you took a long, hard look at yourself in the mirror, Mr President!
Tip: The answer to this problem is not to clamp down on people’s right to freedom of speech; but to change your yourself and your behaviour enough for people to start liking you. — © Mark Alexander
