Hamburger Helper Sales Rise as Americans Try to Stretch Their Food Dollars

THE NEW YORK TIMES: The price of beef and other grocery items are climbing, and consumers are turning to canned meats and a 1970s staple.

In the 1970s, Hamburger Helper became a staple on American dinner tables as families, strained by inflation and soaring beef prices, looked to turn a pound of ground beef into an entire meal.

These days, those same pressures are why the flavored pasta mix is coming to the rescue again.

While most food companies are seeing declines in consumer demand for their products, sales of Hamburger Helper are up 14.5 percent in the year through August, getting an extra bump from its appearance on an episode of “The Bear” in June, according to the company that owns the brand, Eagle Foods.

And it’s not just Hamburger Helper. Sales of foods commonly purchased by consumers when financial times get tough are on the rise, according to industry analysts. Purchases of rice are up 7.5 percent this year. Distressed shoppers are also buying more cans of tuna, salmon and sardines. Sales of beans and boxes of macaroni and cheese are also strong, based on data from the research firm Circana.

Uncertainty about the economy and higher tariffs levied on goods from a variety of countries have led many consumers to refocus their spending on essentials or items that are good values, while cutting back on extras or unnecessary spending. » | Julie Creswell | Saturday, September 20, 2025

How can this be? I thought that the economics genius now in the driving seat in America was going to bring down the price of eggs for the beleaguered American consumer, and fix the US economy BIGLY! This must be another one of the president's failures. — © Mark Alexander

Republicans: Stop Using the Word “Freedom”

September 20, 2025

I have said this time and time again… this is the gentleman who should be president of the United States. Were the American electorate to get smart and elect him to the highest office in the land, we would see a very different America emerge — a much more civilised, caring America, giving all Americans much better opportunities to succeed, and a far better quality of life. That means to say, a fairer society for all. It would be a much nicer country to live in, even for the very rich, and Americans in general would start to feel comfortable with themselves, comfortable in their skins. By the way, Bernie Sanders is no socialist that any sensible European could recognise. Bernie Sanders is simply a man with good, sound, fair principles who wants justice for all. — © Mark Alexander

» | Sophie Barkey | Freitag, 19. Dutch Police Clash with Anti-immigration Protesters in The Hague

THE GUARDIAN: Police use teargas and water cannon to disperse violent demonstrators who block highway and smash windows at centre-left D66 party’s HQ

Dutch police have used teargas and a water cannon to disperse violent anti-immigration protesters in The Hague on Saturday, a local government spokesperson has said.

Thousands of people joined a protest organised by a rightwing activist demanding stricter immigration policies and a clampdown on asylum seekers, just over a month before a national election.

Large groups of protesters, many waving Dutch flags and flags associated with far-right groups, clashed violently with the police, throwing rocks and bottles, footage from broadcaster NOS showed.

A police car was set on fire and a group of protesters briefly blocked a highway near the site of the demonstration. » | Agencies | Saturday, September 20, 2025

Trump Orders DOJ to Prosecute Women Who Yell at Him

Sep 20, 2025 | Donald Trump was so shaken by the fact that a female protester yelled at him during his dinner last week that he announced that he's asked his Attorney General, Pam Bondi, to look into charging the woman under RICO laws. Conservatives, like Trump, are still operating under the false belief that everyone on the Left that protests anything is being paid to do it, partly because they can't wrap their heads around caring so much about something that it drives you to action. Either way, this is a dangerous assault on our First Amendment freedoms, as Farron Cousins explains.

King Made More Than £1m Selling Land for Leg of HS2 That Was Scrapped

THE GUARDIAN: Exclusive: Duchy of Lancaster has maximised profits on land deals despite claiming it ‘does not rely on taxpayers’ money’

King Charles’s private property estate has made more than £1m at taxpayers’ expense from the sale of land for projects linked to the leg of HS2 which will no longer be built, the Guardian can reveal.

The Duchy of Lancaster negotiated payments totalling £1,132,400 by selling land for road works near a proposed hub station in Crewe, Cheshire, in a deal that has emerged despite the organisation’s assertion that it is “completely self-financing and does not rely on taxpayers’ money”.
The duchy – which has been controlled by reigning monarchs since medieval times and exists to provide them with a private income – acquired a sprawling, 1,400-hectare (3,450-acre) estate set around the Jacobean mansion of Crewe Hall in 1936.

In recent years, some of the land has been sold to make way for new roads and housing developments. It is able to maximise its profits on these deals because it is exempt from most business taxes. » | Geraldine McKelvie, Senior correspondent | Saturday, September 20, 2025

Security Guarantees for Ukraine Require Readiness to Fight Russia, Says Finland’s President

THE GUARDIAN: Exclusive: Alexander Stubb says a plausible deterrent and ‘American backstop’ are needed in the event of a future peace deal

Finland’s president, Alexander Stubb, has said security guarantees for Ukraine, which are being discussed by the so-called “coalition of the willing”, would compel the European countries that sign to fight Russia if Moscow launched military action against Ukraine again in future.

“Security guarantees in essence are a deterrent. That deterrent has to be plausible and in order for it to be plausible it has to be strong,” Stubb told the Guardian, in an interview in Helsinki before travelling to New York for the UN general assembly.

He said the guarantees would only come into effect after a future deal between Ukraine and Russia, but insisted that Russia would have no veto over their format.

“Russia has absolutely no say in the sovereign decisions of an independent nation state … So for me it’s not an issue will Russia agree or not. Of course they won’t, but that’s not the point,” he said. » | Shaun Walker in Helsinki | Saturday, September 20, 2025

Mussolini's Fall from Grace | Documentary | Part 2

May 16, 2024 | In the mid-1930s, after 15 years in power, Mussolini remained unsatisfied with his accomplishments. Becoming increasingly radical, he was consumed by a singular obsession: to transform Italians into "new men" and Italy into a warrior nation.

By 1938, having already defeated the Left in the 1920s and the Ethiopians in the mid-1930s, he identified a new enemy: the Jews.

Aligning himself with Hitler, whom he believed would assist him in establishing a new empire along the Mediterranean shores, Mussolini found Italy less willing to rally behind him.

Rise to Power: Mussolini's March on Rome I Documentary | Part 1

May 19, 2024 | In the fall of 1922, former teacher and journalist Benito Mussolini had only recently been elected to parliament when he seized power. His legal coup d’état, which began on 24 October in Naples, was a masterstroke. Standing before 40,000 Fascist party members, he issued an ultimatum to the fragile Italian parliamentary monarchy: “Either they hand us the power, or we will descend on Rome!”

The militants, wearing black shirts and armed with clubs, headed for the capital. Following on from this legendary march on Rome, Mussolini headed up a totalitarian regime that lasted two decades.

The first episode of this portrait of Il Duce will explore how Mussolini took power and consolidated it until the Second Italo-Ethiopian War in the mid-1930s.

He was a populist leader in terms of how he spoke to the Italian people, and a dictator in terms of how he exerted his power. He came from the extreme left but governed from the extreme right. Mussolini invented the new ideology of fascism and was helped in his mission by the business community who wanted an end to left-wing rule.

Despite his brutality, he sought to please the Italian people, promising them a return to the grandeur of Rome. He enjoyed undeniable success for several years, both at home and abroad, until his inevitable downfall.

Outgoing MI6 Chief Says Putin Has ‘Bitten Off More Than He Can Chew’ in Ukraine

THE GUARDIAN: Richard Moore says Russia is unlikely to win on battlefield as his agency launched call to recruit spies

The outgoing head of MI6 has issued a damning indictment of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, saying that Vladimir Putin has “bitten off more than he can chew”.

Richard Moore, known within MI6 as C, used his farewell speech in Istanbul to say that while Russia was unlikely to win on the battlefield, his agency was seeking to recruit spies inside Russia and worldwide in order to fight back.

“Putin has sought to convince the world that Russian victory is inevitable, but he lies. He lies to the world. He lies to his people. Perhaps he even lies to himself,” said Moore. “But we should not believe him. Or credit him with strength he does not have.”

Any Russian victories on the battlefield remained incremental, said Moore, and incurred massive costs as the president’s army fell far short of its original aims to swiftly capture all of Ukraine. » | Ruth Michaelson in Istanbul | Friday, September 19, 2025
