» | Alexander Schmalz | Montag, 15. September 2025

Why Tariffs Won’t Bring Back Manufacturing Jobs, Krugman Explains

Sep 13, 2025 | Nobel laureate Paul Krugman argues that tariff “chaos” and Trump's immigration policies are the real drag on growth by raising costs, freezing investment, and ultimately hitting consumers. He says a 1950s-style manufacturing revival is illusory, tariff revenue won’t fix the deficit, and U.S. trade-rule credibility has suffered lasting damage. On New York City politics, he expects only marginal policy shifts if Democratic nominee for mayor Zohran Mamdani wins.

Israel's Strike on Doha: A Turning Point for the Alliance between Gulf States and the US? | DW News

Sep 14, 2025 | Arab and Muslim leaders are meeting in Doha on Sunday and Monday to discuss the implications of Israel’s strike on the Qatari capital. Qatar's Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani hopes to rally support from Doha's allies over Israel’s breach of the nation's sovereignty. The White House said it had not received prior notice from Israel of its planned attack on Hamas leaders, and that US President Donald Trump was upset by the Israeli move.

Pope Leo Says He Cannot Broker a Peace Deal for Ukraine

THE NEW YORK TIMES: Pope Leo XIV said that while popes can be advocates for peace, it was less “realistic” for them to serve as mediators.

Despite some early media chatter about the pope helping broker peace between Russia and Ukraine, the Vatican is unlikely to act as a mediator in the search for a peace deal, Pope Leo XIV said in excerpts from an interview published Sunday.

“I’d make a distinction in terms of the voice of the Holy See in advocating for peace and a role as mediator, which I think is very different and is not as realistic as the first one,” Leo said in the interview, parts of which were published in Crux, a Catholic news outlet.

The pope, who was elected as the first pontiff from the United States in May, said the Vatican was making “great efforts to maintain a position” that did not take “one side or the other" but was “truly neutral.”

“Some things I’ve said have been interpreted in one way or the other, and that’s all right, but I think that the realistic part of it is not primary right now,” he said in the interview with Elise Ann Allen, senior correspondent for Crux. » | Motoko Rich | Reporting from Rome | Sunday, September 14, 2025

This is strange! Why should the Vatican remain “neutral” in this? Ukraine was attacked by Russia. So, clearly we know which side caused this war. Neutrality shouldn’t come into it. — © Mark Alexander

Assassination of Charlie Kirk Strips Maga of the Man Who Brought the Youth Vote to Trump

THE OBSERVER: The first family mourn the White House insider whose extremist views reflected the Republican party’s major shift to the right

At the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee last year, an atmosphere of divine providence suffused the gathering of GOP faithful.

Days before he was set to accept the Republican presidential nomination for the third time, Donald Trump had barely escaped with his life, grazed by an assassin’s bullet at a rally in Pennsylvania.

The former president’s deliverance lent a miraculous air to the week. After Trump swaggered into the arena in Milwaukee sporting a dressing over his wounded right ear, imitation bandages appeared on the ears of scores of supporters. T-shirts sporting the iconic image of Trump’s bloodied face and his clenched fist in the air were the most sought-after item on the merch stands surrounding the venue.

One of the first to lay his hands on one was Charlie Kirk. While Trump and his family watched from the VIP box each evening, the Turning Point USA co-founder remained on the floor of the convention centre, soaking up the atmosphere and fielding good wishes from a stream of supporters and Maga grandees.

Troubled Starmer ‘Reeks of Defeat’ after Mandelson Fiasco

THE OBSERVER: Pressure mounts on the prime minister as Epstein scandal reaches the doors of No 10

Keir Starmer’s grip on his premiership is under stress, with Labour MPs increasingly speculating about leadership challenges and calling for his chief of staff to be removed.

An already fractious party, with MPs furious about everything from the handling of Gaza and the welfare rebellion to the departure of Angela Rayner and subsequent reshuffle, came to boiling point last week over Starmer’s handling of the scandal surrounding Peter Mandelson.

Starmer and his chief of staff, Morgan McSweeney, are being dogged by questions about when the prime minister learned the details of a cache of emails published by Bloomberg, in which Lord Mandelson expressed support for the convicted child sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. » | Catherine Neilan, Whitehall Editor | Sunday, September 14, 2025

Exclusive: TVP World in Finland – the Country with NATO's Longest Russia Border | News in Depth

Sep 11, 2025 | Finland, home to 5.5 million people sharing NATO’s longest border with Russia, is strengthening its defenses after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. While many Finns feel confident in their preparedness, others remain wary of the Kremlin’s threats and hybrid tactics, such as the weaponization of migrants. Along the border, Finnish guards remain calm yet vigilant, even though military installations are limited, and most crossings have been closed since 2023. The country has built extensive civil defense infrastructure, including over 50,000 shelters capable of housing 87% of its population in a crisis. Finland also maintains nearly 900,000 reservists and emphasizes self-reliance, viewing NATO as only a third line of defense after its own forces and regional allies. Officials stress that preparations began decades ago, reflecting Finland’s long and often tense history with Russia.
