LE TEMPS: Dans une interview publiée sur le site internet du quotidien alémanique Tages Anzeiger, Tariq Ramadan s’exprime sur le vote anti-minarets et l’intégration des musulmans. Il se prononce contre la création d’un parti islamique démocratique en Suisse

Trois mois après le vote par lequel les Suisses ont refusé la construction de nouveaux minarets, l’intellectuel Tariq Ramadan dédramatise les conséquences de ce scrutin dans une longue interview publiée sur le site internet du Tages Anzeiger. Il s’exprime aussi sur les défis posés par la présence des musulmans en Suisse et en Europe, ainsi que par la construction d’une société pluriculturelle.

Après le vote du 29 novembre, certains avaient prophétisé qu’une tempête de protestations se lèverait dans le monde islamique. Or il ne s’est rien passé. Cela n’étonne pas Tariq Ramadan: «Tous les érudits musulmans du monde savent que les minarets ne sont pas prescrits par les Ecritures. Il s’agit d’une question architecturale». L’intellectuel suisse dénonce néanmoins l’attitude de l’UDC, qui a cherché à attiser le conflit, sans y parvenir. «Les musulmans ont réagi de manière réfléchie. Tariq Ramadan n’est plus interdit d’entrée aux Etats-Unis
TRIBUNE DE GENÈVE: LEVÉE D'INTERDICTION | L’intellectuel genevois Tariq Ramadan a fait savoir hier qu’il n’était plus interdit d’entrée aux Etats-Unis. L’American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) a confirmé dans un communiqué que la secrétaire d’Etat Hillary Clinton avait signé des ordres qui mettent fin à l’interdiction.

L’intellectuel genevois Tariq Ramadan a fait savoir hier qu’il n’était plus interdit d’entrée aux Etats-Unis. L’American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) a confirmé dans un communiqué que la secrétaire d’Etat Hillary Clinton avait signé des ordres qui mettent fin à l’interdiction.

Tariq Ramadan a imploré mercredi les députés français de ne pas interdire le port de la burqa, estimant qu’une telle mesure pousserait les musulmans à s’isoler encore plus, au moment où l’interdiction de la construction des minarets en Suisse semble aggraver le fossé entre islam et Occident.

«En ce qui me concerne, je pense que la burqa et le niqâb [sa version saoudienne] ne sont pas des prescriptions islamiques», alors que le simple foulard «en est une», a déclaré l’intellectuel suisse devant la mission parlementaire d’information sur le port du voile intégral.

Mais «une loi qui serait simplement perçue comme stigmatisante ne résoudrait pas le problème». D’autant que pour les femmes qui ont adopté le voile intégral, «l’autorité de ce qui se dit ici n’a absolument pas de poids par rapport à ce qui se dit là-bas» – c’est-à-dire en Arabie saoudite, d’où prêchent, par Internet, la plupart des religieux qui considèrent la burqa comme une obligation. Reporting from London - Liberal Muslim or closet fundamentalist? Peaceful intellectual or militant in sheep's clothing?

Tariq Ramadan has been called all these things -- and more -- by his friends and foes. Whatever the truth, the Swiss-born Oxford University professor ranks among the most influential thinkers in the Muslim world.

The grandson of the man who founded the radical Muslim Brotherhood, Ramadan drew attention in the United States in 2004 when he was denied a visa to take up a post at the University of Notre Dame because he had given money to a Swiss-based charity that the U.S. later alleged had linked to the militant group Hamas. (In July, a federal appeals court ordered that Ramadan's case be revisited.)

Another controversy erupted last month when Ramadan was fired as an integration advisor to the Dutch city of Rotterdam, which said that his hosting of a show on an Iranian state television network could be seen as an endorsement of the Tehran government. Ramadan calls his dismissal a politically motivated decision to appease Rotterdam's anti-Muslim populist party.

Die einen halten ihn für den Vordenker eines Euro-Islam, andere für einen Scharlatan. Die Universität Rotterdam entzog ihm nun die Gastprofessur, weil er eine Sendung im iranischen Fernsehen moderiert.

An Tariq Ramadan scheiden sich die Geister. Für die einen ist der 46 Jahre alte Schweizer Staatsbürger einer der wenigen islamischen Intellektuellen, die eine diskussionsfähige Vision eines modernen „Euro-Islams“ vertreten. Für die anderen ist er ein Scharlatan, der westlichen Medien erzählt, was sie hören wollen und vor Glaubensgenossen aufklärungsfeindliche Positionen vertritt.

n der vergangenen Woche hat die Erasmus-Universität Rotterdam Ramadan die Gastprofessur entzogen, die er dort seit Januar 2007 ausübte. Zugleich war Ramadan in der niederländischen Stadt, die einen Ausländeranteil von 49 Prozent hat und einen Bürgermeister, der aus Marokko stammt, Berater für Integrationsfragen. Auch diesen Posten ist er nun los. Der Grund: Ramadan moderiert auf dem englischsprachigen iranischen Nachrichtensender Press TV eine Sendung mit dem Titel „Islam and Life“. Der Sender wird von der iranischen Regierung finanziert. La ville de Rotterdam a annoncé mercredi qu'elle poursuivait sa collaboration avec l'intellectuel genevois controversé Tariq Ramadan, conseiller de la mairie depuis 2007. Son poste était remis en question après des propos homophobes qui lui avaient été attribués par les médias néerlandais.

M. Ramadan "a, au sujet de l'homosexualité, un point de vue relativement conservateur", a reconnu Rik Grasshof, conseiller municipal à la Culture, lors d'une conférence de presse à Rotterdam. "Mais il a toujours été dans la même logique", a-t-il ajouté en présence de M. Ramadan, à savoir que "l'homosexualité est difficile à accepter en islam, mais le respect pour la personne prime" sur la religion. 
Voulant étouffer dans l'oeuf toute controverse, le conseil municipal a demandé une traduction assermentée de certains discours de M. Ramadan, reproduits fin mars dans De Gay Krant, un magazine pour homosexuels. >>> ATS/AFP | Mercredi 15 Avril 2009

SPIEGELONLINE INTERNATIONAL: Dutch City Rules 'Euro Islam' Proponent Is not Homophobic

Rotterdam has exonerated Muslim scholar Tariq Ramadan in an investigation over alleged homophobic and misogynistic statements he made in tapes aimed at immigrants. Holland's second largest city says it will retain him as an adviser to build bridges between its immigrant communities.

Last month, the Gay Krant, a newspaper for the homosexual community in the Netherlands, accused Tariq Ramadan of making homophobic and mysogenistic statements on tapes in Arabic destined for immigrant communities in Europe.

Ramadan, 46, a Swiss philosopher and theologist of Egyptian descent, was hired by the city of Rotterdam two years ago to "help lift the multicultural dialogue to a higher level". He dismissed the Gay Krant's accusations as slander.

The city of Rotterdam has since carried out its own investigation, the results of which were presented on Wednesday. The city had 54 Arabic-language cassette tapes translated and examined. According to council executive Rik Grasshof of the Green party GroenLinks, the Gay Krant's reporting was incomplete en [sic] inaccurate.

As a result, Ramadan's contract with the city will be extended for another two years, during which time he will lead public debates in an effort to bring the various communities in Rotterdam closer together. >>> By Mark Hoogstad | Thursday, April 16, 2009
