"Iran, Grönland, Venezuela – Trumps neue Weltordnung?" | maybrit illner vom 15. Januar 2026

Will Congress Stop Trump’s Power Grab? Or Are Republicans Complicit in the Downfall of NATO?
ANTHONY DAVIS can be supported on Patreon here.
Trump and his cronies don’t give a damn about the Constitution! One of the best ways to think about Trump and his MAGA movement is to think of cancer, a malign primary growth, a primary tumour, and metastasized growths or tumours springing up all over the body politics of other western nations. One can also think of the movement as a pox on the West. Think of how quickly mushrooms in a field spring up after a night of rain.
As for some of MAGA’s characters, there are too many to mention here. But Stephen Miller is America’s very own Joseph Goebbels, its very own Minister of Propaganda, or as he would have been known in Hitler’s Third Reich, Reichsminister für Volksaufklärung und Propaganda. As for little Mike Johnson, well, he is just a queer little fellow. — © Mark Alexander

Whether or Not Trump Invades Greenland, This Much Is Clear: The Western Order We Once Knew Is History
THE GUARDIAN: The EU must be more robust in order to stem the tide of international disorder, or it risks falling to authoritarian imperialism
Donald Trump is threatening to take over Greenland, the territory of a Nato ally, possibly by military force, as Vladimir Putin is trying to take over Ukraine. Even if he doesn’t actually do it, this is a new era: a post-western world of illiberal international disorder.
The task now for liberal democracies in general, and Europe in particular, is twofold: to see this world as it is and to work out what the hell we’re going to do about it.
A global public opinion poll published today is a useful starting point. It was conducted last November in 21 countries for the European Council on Foreign Relations, in partnership with our Europe in a Changing World research project at the University of Oxford (and do please read the full report, which I have written with Ivan Krastev and Mark Leonard). This is the fourth in a series of polls we’ve done every year since Putin’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, so we can see how things have evolved from very bad then to critical now.
Back in 2022, we found a transatlantic west united in outrage at the full-scale invasion of Ukraine but divided from other great and middle powers, such as China, India and Turkey, who were quite happy to go on doing business as usual with Russia. The Russian economy was surviving unprecedented western sanctions because those other states now had sufficient wealth and power between them to counterbalance even a united west. So this was already a post-western world, but still with a west acting in it.
Trump 2.0 has changed all that. Now we have a post-western world, but with no coherent geopolitical west acting in it. To the extent that any strategic coherence should be attributed to the erratic narcissism of Trump, his approach is closer to that of Putin than it is to that of any US president since 1945. As his right-hand man Stephen Miller frankly explains, they believe the world is “governed by strength … by force … by power”. » | Timothy Garton Ash | Thursday, January 15, 2026

Reza Pahlavi: Is the Last Shah's Son a Viable Opposition Leader for Iran? – Video Explainer
Rightwing Leaders Endorse Viktor Orbán in Hungarian Election Campaign Video
THE GUARDIAN: Italy’s Giorgia Meloni and France’s Marine Le Pen among figures showing support for Hungary’s prime minister
Rightwing leaders from around the world have come together to endorse Hungary’s Viktor Orbán, hinting at the symbolism that the country’s elections hold for global far-right movements even as the populist leader lags in the polls.
A campaign video published online by Orbán this week includes endorsements from nearly a dozen leaders including Italy’s Giorgia Meloni and Matteo Salvini, France’s Marine Le Pen and Germany’s Alice Weidel.
“Europe needs Viktor Orbán,” Weidel, a co-leader of the far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD), tells viewers.
Le Pen, the former leader of France’s far-right National Rally party, piles praise on the leader who once described Hungary as a “petri dish for illiberalism”. “Thanks to leaders like Viktor Orbán, the camp of patriots and defenders of nations and sovereign peoples is achieving ever greater success in Europe,” she says.
Meloni, in turn, seeks to highlight the similarities she shares with Orbán: “Together we stand for a Europe that respects national sovereignty [and] is proud of its cultural and religious roots.”
…
Orbán, who has long faced criticism for weakening democratic institutions, eroding media freedom and undermining the rule of law, is facing an unprecedented challenge from a former top member of his own party, Péter Magyar. » | Ashifa Kassam | Friday, January 16, 2026
One thing I notice is that Giorgia Meloni and these other politicians endorsing traditional lifestyles are no strangers to hypocrisy. It seems to be a case of… ‘don’t do as I do; do as I say.’
If Hungarians are wise, they will replace Viktor Orbán with a more moderate leader. Orbán needs a rest from politics; and Europe needs a rest from his politics! Europeans are surely tired of his fossilized thinking. As for those endorsements, I am not so sure that an endorsement from Javier Milei, the leader of Argentina with his anarcho-capitalistic ideas, is very reassuring to the Hungarian electorate! And do the others really live up to the principles they espouse? A quick Google-search of these characters tells you all you need to know. — © Mark Alexander

The Real Iran Is a Beautiful, Peace-loving, and Flourishing Iran
15 Jan 2026 | To all of our friends around the world.
Under the yoke of the Islamic Republic, Iran is identified in your minds with terrorism, extremism, and poverty. The real Iran is a different Iran. A beautiful, peace-loving, and flourishing Iran. It is the Iran that existed before the Islamic Republic, and it is the Iran that will rise again from its ashes the day the Islamic Republic falls.
So let me be clear about how a free Iran will act toward its neighbors and the world, after the fall of this regime. In security and foreign policy, Iran’s nuclear military program will end. Support for terrorist groups will cease immediately. A free Iran will work with regional and global partners to confront terrorism, organized crime, drug trafficking, and extremist Islamism. Iran will act as a friend and a stabilizing force in the region. And it will be a responsible partner in global security.
In diplomacy, relations with the United States will be normalized and our friendship with America and her people will be restored. The State of Israel will be recognized immediately. We will pursue the expansion of the Abraham Accords into the Cyrus accords bringing together a free Iran, Israel, and the Arab world. A new chapter will begin, grounded in mutual recognition, sovereignty, and national interest.
In energy, Iran holds some of the largest oil and gas reserves in the world. A free Iran will become a reliable energy supplier to the free world. Policy-making will be transparent. Iran’s actions will be responsible. Prices will be predictable. In transparency and governance, Iran will adopt and enforce international standards. Money laundering will be confronted. Organized corruption will be dismantled. Public institutions will answer to the people. In the economy, Iran is one of the world’s last great untapped markets. Our population is educated, modern, with a diaspora that connects it to the four corners of the world. A democratic Iran will open its economy to trade, investment, and innovation. And Iran will seek to invest in the world. Opportunity will replace isolation.
This is not an abstract vision. It is a practical one. Grounded in national interest, stability, and cooperation. To achieve this, now is the time to stand with the Iranian people.
The fall of the Islamic Republic and the establishment of a secular, democratic government in Iran will not only restore dignity to my people, it will benefit the region and the world. A free Iran will be a force for peace. For prosperity. And for partnership.

María Corina Machado Says She Presented Trump with Her Nobel Peace Prize Medal
THE GUARDIAN: The Venezuelan opposition leader did not confirm whether the US president accepted the award
The Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado has said she “presented” her gold Nobel peace prize medal to Donald Trump after meeting him in the White House, nearly a fortnight after he ordered the abduction of Venezuela’s president, Nicolás Maduro.
Machado, who received the award last year for her struggle against Maduro’s “brutal, authoritarian state”, told reporters she had done so “in recognition [of] his unique commitment [to] our freedom”. It was not immediately clear whether Trump had accepted the gift.
Earlier in the day the Nobel organizers posted on X: “A medal can change owners, but the title of a Nobel peace prize laureate cannot.” » | Tom Phillips and Hugo Lowell | Thursday, January 15, 2026

Anger in Iceland over Incoming US Ambassador’s ‘52nd State’ Joke
THE GUARDIAN: Thousands sign petition calling on Iceland’s foreign minister to reject Trump ally Billy Long’s nomination
Thousands of people have signed a petition expressing anger after Donald Trump’s nominee for ambassador to Iceland reportedly joked that the Nordic country should become the 52nd US state.
On Wednesday, hours before top officials from Greenland and Denmark were to meet with the US in the hope of warding off Trump’s threats to seize the Arctic island, the news outlet Politico said it had heard of musings regarding another Nordic island.
“We heard that former Rep Billy Long, Trump’s nominee for ambassador to Iceland, joked to members on the floor last night that Iceland will be the 52nd state and he’ll be governor,” Politico wrote in its morning newsletter.
The reaction in Reykjavík was swift. In a statement to the Guardian, Iceland’s foreign ministry said it had contacted the US embassy for clarification. “The ministry for foreign affairs contacted the US embassy in Iceland to verify the veracity of the alleged comments,” it said. » | Ashifa Kassam, European community affairs correspondent | Thursday, January 15, 2026

Grönland: Würde Deutschland helfen, wenn Trump militärisch agiert? | Markus Lanz vom 14. Januar 2026

Canada and Denmark's Shocking Greenland Deal Leaves US Reeling
Donald Trump’s Trump Greenland Threats have detonated a diplomatic crisis inside NATO—and Canada just drew a bright red line in Paris. In this video, we break down how Trump Greenland Threats to take Greenland “by force” triggered a unified European response, pushed Denmark to warn NATO itself could collapse, and prompted Canada’s new Prime Minister Mark Carney to publicly side with Denmark—then back it up with a concrete move: a Canadian consulate in Nuuk, Greenland.
You’ll hear why Carney’s language mattered, how NATO allies coordinated their message that Greenland’s future belongs to Greenlanders and Denmark alone, and why this moment could reshape Arctic security cooperation for years. We also explain the strategic stakes—from Pituffik (Thule) Space Force Base to Arctic shipping lanes and critical minerals—and why Trump Greenland Threats may be doing Russia and China a massive favor.
If you care about NATO, Arctic geopolitics, and how presidential rhetoric can fracture alliances, this is the story you can’t ignore.

USA gegen Dänemark: Marschiert Trump jetzt in Grönland ein? | Weltspiegel

Under Trump, a Shift Toward ‘Absolute Immunity’ for ICE
THE NEW YORK TIMES: The instructions to Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents explain in clear terms how to defuse dangerous encounters: Use “minimal force” when trying to remove people from cars. Issue commands in “professional,” “firm,” “courteous” voices.
“First step in arresting an occupant of a vehicle is NOT to reach in and grab him, unless there are specific circumstances requiring that action,” reads one internal ICE document providing legal guidance for uses of force during vehicle stops. It was reviewed by The New York Times, along with other training materials. ICE officials will thoroughly investigate any encounter, but “deadly force” is allowed only when agents believe lives are in danger.
The fatal shooting of Renee Good last week by an ICE agent in Minneapolis — and the quick reaction by Trump administration officials to declare the agent a hero and Ms. Good a villain — has put a new focus on whether federal agents enforcing President Trump’s deportation drive have been properly prepared for confrontations on city streets. The response of Mr. Trump and his top lieutenants to the killing has also underscored how they have embraced what is supposed to be a last resort under the written standards: using lethal force in self-defense.
Rather than encourage agents to de-escalate combustible encounters, as the agency guidelines emphasize, Mr. Trump and his lieutenants have provided tacit approval for more aggressive tactics. » | Hamed Aleaziz and Nicholas Nehamas | Reporting from Washington | Thursday, January 15, 2026

Here in Greenland We Are Scared, But Certain of One Thing: Our Home Is Not For Sale
THE GUARDIAN: A summit between Greenland, Denmark and Washington has done nothing to calm our fears as the US steps up its efforts to take control of my country
The year has started out in familiar fashion for Kalaallit – the people of Greenland. The US president has once again threatened to take control of the world’s biggest island, just like he did back in 2019 and in 2024/25. Yet it feels different this time.
This time it seems as if there are more concrete plans being shaped within the Trump administration to annex Greenland. Trump wants to “take” it “whether they like it or not”, as he stated at a recent White House press conference. And the only option he seems to be offering currently is to do it “either the nice way or the more difficult way” – whatever that means. These are obviously plans for the forceful theft of Indigenous land and a self-governing territory; they are loud threats against our democracy – threats that are coming directly from the US president, again and again, through the media. That is scary. And the Greenlandic people do not feel safe. » | Malu Rosing | Thursday, January 15, 2026
