Zohran Mamdani Wins New York City Mayoral Election | BBC News

Nov 5, 2025 | Zohran Mamdani, 34, has won New York City's race for mayor in a contest that rallied young voters and sparked debate about the future direction of the Democratic Party.

The Ugandan-born Mamdani, a Democrat, beat former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, running as an independent, to become the youngest person in over a century to lead the largest city in the US.

"My friends, we have toppled a political dynasty," he told the crowd during a victory speech, touting voters' "mandate for change" and "mandate for a city we can afford".

A self-described democratic socialist, he made affordability the central message of his campaign, pledging to expand social programmes paid for by new taxes on high earners and corporations.

Democrats also won governor races in Virginia and New Jersey, and in California voters backed a proposition to redraw the congressional electoral map ahead of next year's midterm elections.

How Zohran Mamdani Beat Back New York’s Elite and Was Elected Mayor

THE NEW YORK TIMES: The 34-year-old assemblyman won the Democratic primary by defying the city’s all-powerful establishment. He secured the mayoralty by delicately disarming it.

Zohran Mamdani was still asleep early in the morning after June’s Democratic primary when the phone calls started flooding in. There were the usual congratulations, certainly, but also signs of something more worrying.

A young democratic socialist, Mr. Mamdani had just toppled former Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo, upending New York’s power structure in an upset so stunning and so swift that even he had not fully seen it coming.

Now, titans of the city establishment were clogging up the phones of the candidate and his small team, looking for belated introductions. Most did not sound happy.

“It’s a great day in New York,” Morris Katz, Mr. Mamdani’s 26-year-old political adviser, told the real estate magnate William C. Rudin in one of the conversations. » | Nicholas Fandos | Tuesday, November 4, 2025

The progressive Queens assemblyman defeated former governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa in a stunning upset that marks a major shift in city politics. Mamdani’s campaign focused on affordability, rent freezes, free childcare, and public transit, drawing massive grassroots support from young voters and working-class communities across the five boroughs.

‘Turn the Volume Up’: Mamdani Invokes Trump in Fiery Speech that Laid Out Plan of Action

Zohran Mamdani, the newly elected mayor of New York City, issued a direct call to Donald Trump in his victory speech on Tuesday night, saying he would enter City Hall with a firm plan to counter the politics of division and cronyism that helped elevate him to the White House.

Mamdani, speaking to supporters in Brooklyn after a decisive victory over Andrew Cuomo, the former governor, said New York had shown it would be the “light” in a “moment of political darkness”.

“Here we believe in standing up for those we love, whether you are an immigrant, a member of the trans community, one of the many Black women that Donald Trump has fired from a federal job, a single mom still waiting for the cost of groceries to go down, or anyone else with their back against the wall,” Mamdani, who will be the city’s first Muslim mayor, said. “No more will New York be a city where you can traffic in Islamophobia and win an election.”

The mayor-elect then issued a direct message to the president, saying if any city could show the nation how to defeat Trump, it was the “city that gave rise to him”.

“So, if there is any way to terrify a despot, it is by dismantling the very conditions that allowed him to accumulate power. This is not only how we stop Trump, it’s how we stop the next one. So, Donald Trump, since I know you’re watching, I have four words for you: Turn the volume up,” Mamdani said, to raucous applause. » | Nick Visser | Wednesday, November 5, 2025

Trump Threatens to Cut Funds If ‘Communist’ Mamdani Wins Mayoral Election

THE GUARDIAN: President backs Cuomo in election eve Truth Social post as Mamdani hits back at Trump’s ‘threat – it is not the law’

On the eve of New York’s well-watched mayoral election, President Donald Trump issued a threat to its voters: stop Zohran Mamdani or pay.

“If Communist Candidate Zohran Mamdani wins the Election for Mayor of New York City, it is highly unlikely that I will be contributing Federal Funds, other than the very minimum as required, to my beloved first home,” Trump said in a post on Truth Social. “I don’t want to send, as President, good money after bad.”

Trump’s comments echo those broadcast on Sunday during his appearance on CBS’s 60 minutes, in which he said: “It’s gonna be hard for me as the president to give a lot of money to New York, because if you have a communist running New York, all you’re doing is wasting the money you’re sending there.” » | George Chidi | Tuesday, November 4, 2025

Democracy Now! "Master Plan": David Sirota on the Elite Plot to Legalize Corruption in the U.S.

Oct 29, 2025 | We speak with journalist David Sirota about his new book, Master Plan: The Hidden Plot to Legalize Corruption in America. Co-authored with Jared Jacang Maher, the book is based on their award-winning investigative podcast of the same name for The Lever.

Sirota says that while the United States is now "immersed in corruption" in a way that seems like an inevitable part of politics, it is the result of a decades-long agenda by the wealthy to deregulate the campaign finance system and to essentially make anti-bribery laws unenforceable. "This is all part of a plan by a corporate movement that sees democracy — the government providing what people want — sees that as a threat."

HUNGRY MAN KITCHEN: Turkish Doner Kebab You Can Actually Make At Home, Even on the Stove-top!

Jun 9, 2021 | Doner [also döner] is a worldwide known Turkish delicacy and is usually cooked on special vertical rotisseries designed for doner kebab. It's also quite easy to make doner at home, even better than the ones you can find in European or American kebab shops. In this video, I'll show you how to make an amazingly flavorful doner at home with a mix of lamb and beef, which will definitely impress you and your friends. Get ready for the best homemade doner kebab recipe!

Information about the lamb fat: Lamb fat is traditionally used in kebabs and doners for its unique taste and is a signature ingredient in Turkish meat dishes. In Turkey, traditionally "fail fat" from the lamb is used, however this part of the lamb is usually not available in Europe or U.S. Instead, you can also ask your butcher for lamb fat trimmed from the belly or ribs of the lamb. This will also add a very similar flavor to your kebabs and doner.
