FULL SPEECH: Pete Hegseth Rails against the 'Woke,' Lays Out Standards to Top Generals, Admirals

Sep 30, 2025 | In a speech Tuesday morning before an auditorium packed with several hundred of the nation's most seasoned military commanders, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth called for an end to "woke" culture in the military and railed against a litany of complaints such as diversity and probes into hazing.

Hegseth called for "no more division, distraction or gender delusions" in an extraordinarily blunt speech on the importance of the "warrior ethos," a term he uses to describe the spirit that makes combat units effective.

Note: There is some profanity in the language.

Sep 30, 2025 | Prime Minister Keir Starmer is set to warn the country that it faces a "defining choice" between "decency" and "division" as he delivers his speech to the Labour Party conference on Tuesday.

Starmer’s speech comes at a challenging moment for the PM, who faces questions about his leadership and speculation about a challenge from Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham.

The government is also facing numerous difficult decisions around the nation's finances, with Chancellor Rachel Reeves laying the groundwork for more tax rises in the budget due in November.

What I find appalling and perplexing is that the beleaguered and besieged Palestinians themselves have not been given any say in their own future, in the future of their own homeland. Surely, after the genocide that has been perpetrated upon these poor people, the very least the world could do is give them a say in their own future, and future homeland.

The world was generous to the then Jews who had suffered persecution in the Third Reich. And understandably so. They were given a homeland. Because of this generosity, one would have hoped that these self-same people would show the same generosity to the Palestinians now. Palestinians deserve a place to call their own as well. — © Mark Alexander

How Spain Bankrupted the World’s Largest Empire

Sep 27, 2025 | Spain once ruled the world. In the 16th century, it built the first true global empire, stretching across Europe, the Americas, Africa, and Asia. Mountains of gold and silver from Mexico and Peru poured into its treasuries — more wealth than any empire had ever controlled. And yet, within a century, Spain was bankrupt.

In this episode of The Financial Historian, we uncover how Spain — the richest empire on earth — destroyed itself with bad economics. From the Price Revolution that triggered Europe’s first wave of inflation, to endless religious wars that drained the crown’s coffers, to pirates and privateers who turned Spain’s treasure fleets into floating banks ripe for plunder, the story is both epic and familiar. Spain confused treasure with real wealth, and its rivals — England and the Dutch — used Spanish silver to build navies, banks, and trade systems that would outlast the empire itself.

The lesson is urgent today. Floods of money — whether from debt, credit, or money-printing — don’t guarantee prosperity. Without systems, discipline, and investment in real productivity, wealth corrodes from within. Spain’s empire collapsed because it mistook treasure for security. Are we making the same mistake now?
