Occupy Wall Street: Protesters Vow to Fight On

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: Protesters have flooded back into the New York park where police demolished their two-month-old tent camp, vowing to step up the Occupy Wall Street campaign despite a ban on camping out there.

The movement to protest alleged corporate greed and political dysfunction was thrown into crisis during a turbulent 24 hours on Tuesday that began with a surprise early morning police raid on the privately-owned Zuccotti Park.

Protesters then spent the day playing cat-and-mouse with authorities as they sought to re-establish their base near Wall Street, the symbolic epicenter of a movement that has inspired similar protests in other US cities and abroad.

In the evening, police reopened the park and let the protesters back in one-by-one - but only after a New York judge backed a ban on pitching tents, rejecting the demonstrators' legal challenge to the dismantling of the camp.

"No one will be denied entry," a police officer said at the gate, as people began to wander back in. Organisers put the number at 1,200. Once inside, the crowd began to chant: "All day, all week, occupy Wall Street."

Both sides were claiming victory after judge Michael Stallman ruled that the owners of the park and the authorities were not denying protesters their constitutional right to freedom of speech by banning them from camping out.

"Zuccotti Park will remain open to all who want to enjoy it, as long as they abide by the park's rules," Mayor Michael Bloomberg said in a statement. » | November 16, 2011

Starkey: ‘Britain Is a White Mono-culture and Schools Should Focus on Our Own History’

MAIL ONLINE: David Starkey has sparked controversy by claiming Britain is a white 'mono-culture' and that children should focus on studying the history of their 'own culture'.

It comes just three months after the historian blamed the summer riots in England on the import of a 'violent, destructive, nihilistic' black 'gangsta' culture.

He then further stoked the flames by adding that Enoch Powell was right in warning, more than 40 years ago, that immigration would ultimately cause conflict across our cities.

Speaking at a historians' conference in London, Dr Starkey attacked the notion of British children studying world history, according to The Times [£]. Read on and comment » | Daily Mail Reporter | Tuesday, November 15, 2011
Muhammad Cartoon Plot Trial Opens in Norway

THE GUARDIAN: Three men accused of plotting to bomb the offices of Denmark's Jyllands-Posten newspaper plead not guilty on opening day

Three Norwegians accused of plotting, with al-Qaida's help, to bomb a Danish newspaper for printing cartoons of the prophet Muhammad, have pleaded not guilty to the charges in an Oslo court.

The alleged ringleader, Mikael Davud, learned how to use explosives at an al-Qaida camp in Pakistan and made "an agreement" with [the] group to blow up the offices of the daily Jyllands-Posten newspaper, prosecutor Geir Evanger said on the first day of the trial.

The three acquired bomb-making ingredients such as hydrogen peroxide and acetone, and two of them may also have planned to kill a Danish cartoonist who had drawn Muhammad with a bomb in his turban, Evanger said in his opening statement.

"This is a ground-breaking case in Norway," Davud's lawyer, Arild Karl Humlen, said. "It is the first full-scale test of new [Norwegian] terror laws and the first time they [the prosecutors] are linking a terror conspiracy to an international organisation."

Jyllands-Posten was the first of several European publications to print cartoons lampooning the prophet in late 2005 and early 2006, sparking violent protests in the Middle East and Africa and a widespread debate about press freedom.

As recently as 2 November a firebomb attack gutted the headquarters of French satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo after it put an image of the prophet on its cover. » | Reuters | Tuesday, November 15, 2011

Nicolas Sarkozy Sends Letter of Condolence to Benjamin Netanyahu Following 'Liar' Dig

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: Nicolas Sarkozy sent a letter of condolence to Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli premier, after having reportedly called him a "liar", according to a senior Israeli official.

Mr Sarkozy, the French president, suffered embarrassment last week when he reportedly made the remarks to US President Barack Obama during the G20 summit in Cannes.

The conversation was overheard by a number of journalists after it was inadvertently transmitted over a system used for translation, media website Arret Sur Images reported. "I can't stand him anymore, he's a liar," Mr Sarkozy was heard to say in French.

The Israeli official said: "President (Nicolas) Sarkozy sent a personal letter in his and his wife Carla's name in which he expresses his condolences to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his spouse Sarah after the death of the latter's father. » | Monday, November 14, 2011
The Iron Lady's Success Will Be Difficult for David Cameron to Bear

TELEGRAPH – BLOGS – BENEDICT BROGAN: According to those who have seen it, there's a delicious moment in The Iron Lady set in the present when Margaret Thatcher is at a dinner party and we hear her say "I don't like coalitions". Another guest suggests the Prime Minister performed well, at which point she agrees then adds: "He's quite a smoothie." The PM is left unnamed, but presumably the director and the author could not resist a dig at modern politics and current incumbent of No10. The bad news for David Cameron is that the film in fact could do more than just tweak his tail. If it's the success it looks like it might be, it will invite some difficult comparisons. Will it become a rallying point for disgruntled Conservatives? » | Benedict Brogan | Tuesday, November 15, 2011
David Cameron's Imitation of Julia Gillard 'Worst Australian Accent Ever'

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: David Cameron's imitation of Julia Gillard's broad nasal inflection has been panned in Australia as a diplomatic insult and "perhaps one of the worst Aussie accents in history".

Ms Gillard, who was born in Wales, has frequently made self-deprecating remarks about her own accent – which is deeply nasal and consonant-swallowing, even by Australian standards.

But Mr Cameron's imitation, during a speech at the Lord Mayor of London's banquet, was roundly denounced, drawing unfavourable comparisons with James Coburn's accent in The Great Escape and Meryl Streep's in Evil Angels.

Mr Cameron attempted his impersonation – albeit with a disclaimer – while recounting a conversation he had with the Australian Prime Minister during the recent Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting in Perth about the move to scrap laws that bar firstborn daughters from inheriting the British throne.

"I turned to the Australian prime minister and said, 'thank you very much Julia for allowing us to have this meeting in Australia,'" Mr Cameron said. "And she said, I can't quite do the accent but I'll try – 'Not a bit David, this is good news for sheilas everywhere'." Nick Clegg Warns European In-fighting Will Play into Hands of 'Chauvinists'

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: Nick Clegg has warned European leaders not to give ammunition to "chauvinists and demagogues" by getting caught up with in-fighting over the economic crisis.

The Deputy Prime Minister urged European countries trying to sort out their financial problems not [to] “disappear into a windowless room” to discuss changes to treaties that millions of people do not care about.

In an outspoken attack, he suggested that this bureaucracy will only play into the hands of Eurosceptics, such as backbench Conservative MPs, who want to withdraw from the Union.

“If the whole political establishment is about to disappear in to a windowless room in Brussels discussing things that no one understands, it means absolutely nothing to millions of ordinary people who are worried about their jobs, worried about economic security, worried about prospects for their children,” he said.

“I tell you the only people who will benefit are populists, chauvinists and demagogues who will exploit that lack of political leadership… At the moment, our priority is the economy, the economy, the economy.” Read on and comment » | Rowena Mason, Political Correspondent | Tuesday, November 15, 2011

Herman Cain's Wife Gloria Rejects Sexual Harassment Allegations

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: Herman Cain's wife Gloria has rejected accusations of sexual harassment against her husband, a leading Republican presidential candidate, insisting: "He totally respects women."

Speaking publicly for the first time, Mrs Cain told Fox News: "You hear the graphic allegations and we know that would have been something that's totally disrespectful of her as a woman. And I know the type of person he is."

After listening to the string of accusations about her husband levelled by at least four women, Mrs Cain said, "I'm thinking he would have to have a split personality to do the things that were said."

The most lurid allegations came from Sharon Bialek, 50, who said that in 1997 Mr Cain lunged at her in a parked car, putting his hand up her skirt and pushing her head down towards his crotch.

Mr Cain has said that his wife of 43 years, who suffers from a serious heart condition, was already aware of allegations made back in 1999, when he ran the National Restaurant Association, where Miss Bialek had worked. Two other women from the association received severance payments after making allegations against Mr Cain. Read on and comment » | Toby Harnden, Washington | Monday, November 14, 2011

» | AFP | lundi 14 novembre 2011
