WELT ONLINE: Er war mit der einzige, der den libyschen Revolutionsführer Muammar al-Gaddafi ungestraft kritisieren durfte: Seif al-Islam Gaddafi, Sohn des umstrittenen Potentaten. Der Westen hätte in ihm gerne Gaddafis Nachfolger gesehen. Doch Seif al-Islam gab seinen Rückzug aus der Politik bekannt – auf Druck seines Vaters.

Ob beim Friseur oder im Basar, in Damaskus, Beirut oder Rabat – wo immer man nach Muammar al-Gaddafi fragt, wird der Finger unter die Nase gehalten und das Schnupfen eines Kokainsüchtigen simuliert. Was der Mann von der Straße dem libyschen Revolutionsführer unterstellt, würde seinen unausgeschlafenen Eindruck sowie seine Unberechenbarkeit erklären.

Anfang August stoppte Gaddafi alle Öllieferungen an die Schweiz, nachdem dort einer seiner sechs Söhne wegen Misshandlung der eigenen Angestellten verhaftet worden war. Schweizer Firmen in Libyen, inklusive Nestlé, wurden geschlossen, zwei Schweizer Staatsbürger verhaftet.

Für Muammar Gaddafi ist das alles business as usual, schließlich diktiert er die Rechtsstaatlichkeit. Politisch Andersdenkende werden verfolgt, unliebsame Presseberichte bestraft und unabhängige Nichtregierungsorganisationen nicht zugelassen. Punkte, die Seif al-Islam Gaddafi, der zweitgeborene und politisch engagierte Sohn des Revolutionsführers – im Gegensatz zu vielen anderen Libyern – ungestraft kritisierte.

Vergangene Woche hielt er in Sebah, einer Wüstensiedlung im Süden des Landes, eine seiner kritischen live im Fernsehen übertragenen Reden. Seif al-Islam forderte bessere Lebensbedingungen für die Bevölkerung, den Aufbau der nicht existenten Zivilgesellschaft, eine rechtschaffene Justiz und eine freie Presse. New York, (Ap) - La Libia è pronta a investire negli Stati Uniti parte del suo fondo sovrano, pari a circa 100 miliardi di dollari. Lo ha confermato il figlio di Muammar Gheddafi, Seif al Islam, senza precisare l'entità della cifra che Tripoli intende stanziare per i suoi investimenti.

"Siamo brave persone, piacevoli. Ci piace lavorare. Investiremo. Abbiamo amici negli States e apriremo un nuovo capitolo nelle nostre relazioni" con gli Stati Uniti, ha detto Seif al Islam Gheddafi in un'intervista all'Associated Press.

Il figlio del leader libico ha confermato che il fondo sovrano di Tripoli "intende investire in America" nonostante l'attuale crisi finanziaria. Senza precisare la cifra, Seif al Islam ha aggiunto che il fondo sovrano libico "ha evitato lo tsunami" finanziario perché si tratta di un fondo nuovo. "Siamo sfuggiti al rischio e adesso siamo in una buona posizione per investire", ha aggiunto.

LE FIGARO: Le fils du guide libyen a annoncé la libération de trois chefs djihadistes et de deux cents militants.

Le régime libyen est décidé à pardonner à ses islamistes. Tripoli a annoncé mardi soir la libération de 214 militants de la cause djihadiste dont certains étaient incarcérés depuis plus de dix ans.

«C'est un moment historique», a affirmé Seif al-Islam, le fils de Mouammar Kadhafi, à l'origine de cet élargissement de masse des membres du Groupe islamique des combattants libyens (Gicl). Ce mouvement, un temps rallié à al-Qaida, fut très actif dans les années 1990. À ses côtés, en guise de symbole, s'affichaient Abdelhakim Belhaj, l'émir du Gicl, Khaled Chrif, son chef militaire, et Sami Saadi, l'idéologue, tous fraîchement libérés.

Seif Al-Islam Reported Willing to Surrender to War Crimes Court
THE TRIPOLI POST: A senior National Transitional Council military official, has said that the second son of the former Libyan leader Muammar Al Qathafi, 39-year-old Seif al-Islam, wants to turn himself in to the Hague war crimes court.

It seems that Seif, his father's heir apparent, who is reportedly travelling with his relative, former intelligence chief Abdullah al-Senussi, is fearing for his life after the capture of his father and his brother Muatassim that led to their death. Instead, fearing he might not be able to find a safe haven across an African border, sees a jail cell in a Dutch jail as his best option.

Both Libyans are indicted by the International Criminal Court, ICC, for crimes against humanity after their crackdown on the popular revolt the began mid-February. Nombre de personnalités et institutions dans le monde occidental sont plongées dans l’embarras après la révélation au grand jour de leurs relations avec le régime de Mouammar Kadhafi, en butte à une révolte populaire dans son pays et à la réprobation internationale.

La prestigieuse London School of Economics (LSE) vient ainsi de payer au prix fort les liens qu’elle entretenait depuis plusieurs années avec la famille du chef de l’Etat libyen, dont le fils, Seif al-Islam, est diplômé de cette université. Rattrapé par le scandale, son directeur a démissionné jeudi soir.

En ligne de mire notamment: une dotation de 1,5 million de livres, dont 300.000 (350.000 euros) ont déjà été versées, faite à cet établissement d’excellence par la fondation dirigée par le cadet des fils Kadhafi.

S’y ajoute une série de contrats, dont une mission menée par le directeur de l’établissement, pour contribuer à la modernisation des institutions financières libyennes. Since their European Union-brokered release last month (more...), the six have given interviews with the European press, including SPIEGEL, citing specific torture techniques and methods used on them while being held on charges of infecting Libyan children with HIV.

In an interview with Al-Jazeera released in excerpts on Wednesday, Seif Al-Islam Gadhafi, considered by some analysts to be a reformer, confirmed most of the allegations.

"Yes, they were tortured by electricity and they were threatened that their family members would be targeted," he said. Gadhafi did not apologize for their treatment, and even said allegations made by Palestinian-Bulgarian doctor Sharaf al-Hazouz, who was arrested with the five nurses and later awarded Bulgarian citizenship, were false. THE NEW YORK TIMES: WASHINGTON — After New Year’s Day 2009, Western media reported that Seif al-Islam el-Qaddafi, a son of the Libyan leader Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi, had paid Mariah Carey $1 million to sing just four songs at a bash on the Caribbean island of St. Barts.

In the newspaper he controlled, Seif indignantly denied the report — the big spender, he said, was his brother, Muatassim, Libya’s national security adviser, according to an American diplomatic cable from the capital, Tripoli.

It was Muatassim, too, the cable said, who had demanded $1.2 billion in 2008 from the chairman of Libya’s national oil corporation, reportedly to establish his own militia. That would let him keep up with yet another brother, Khamis, commander of a special-forces group that “effectively serves as a regime protection unit.”

As the Qaddafi clan conducts a bloody struggle to hold onto power in Libya, cables obtained by WikiLeaks offer a vivid account of the lavish spending, rampant nepotism and bitter rivalries that have defined what a 2006 cable called “Qadhafi Incorporated,” using the State Department’s preference from the multiple spellings for Libya’s troubled first family.

The glimpses of the clan’s antics in recent years that have reached Libyans despite Col. Qaddafi’s tight control of the media have added to the public anger now boiling over. And the tensions between siblings could emerge as a factor in the chaos in the oil-rich African country.

Libya Trial Pledge Over Gaddafi Son

THE INDEPENDENT: David Cameron revealed tonight that he has received assurances from Libyan leaders that captured fugitive Seif al-Islam will be tried in line with international standards.

Britain will offer "every assistance" to Libya's government to ensure Muammar Gaddafi's son is brought to justice over his role in the "barbaric" reign of terror, the Prime Minister added.

Al-Islam was seized in southern Libya with two aides, who were trying to smuggle him out to neighbouring Niger, officials confirmed today.

Mr Cameron said: "The Libyan government's announcement of Seif al-Islam's arrest shows we are near the end of the final chapter of the Gaddafi regime.

"It is a great achievement for the Libyan people and must now become a victory for international justice too.

"He could have contributed to a more open and decent future for his country, but instead chose to lead a bloody and barbaric campaign against his own people. The fate of the Gaddafis should act as a warning to brutal dictators everywhere.

THE NEW YORK TIMES: CAIRO — A five-day-old uprising in Libya took control of its second-largest city of Benghazi and spread for the first time to the capital of Tripoli late on Sunday as the heir-apparent son of its strongman, Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi, warned Libyans in a televised speech that their oil-rich country would fall into civil war and even renewed Western “colonization” if they threw off his father’s 40-year-long rule.

Libya: Col Gaddafi Buried at Dawn

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: Col Muammar Gaddafi was buried at an unknown location at dawn on Tuesday, according to NTC officials.

Officials said earlier that the ousted Libyan leader would be buried in a secret desert grave, ending a wrangle over his rotting corpse that led many to fear for the country's governability.

Transitional government forces had put the body on show in a cold store in Misurata while they argued over what to do with it, until its decay forced them on Monday to end the display.

His son Mutassim is thought to have been buried in the same ceremony. A few relatives and officials were in attendance, according to a Misurata military council official.

Qadhafi has gone. Cameron was determined that he should go. He got his way. Now Islamism will take over instead. It's already happened in Tunisia, and the introduction of sharia law has already begun in Libya. Seif ul-Islam said that if his father were toppled, it would make way for exactly what the West didn't want: Islamism. And he was right.

This in no way means that either Col. Qadhafi or his son were desirable. They were not. But what has really been achieved in Libya? And what has the Arab Spring bought to north Africa? Gaddafi lobte die Entscheidung der schottischen Regierung als "mutig" und deutete an, dass die Freilassung des todkranken Terroristen bei wirtschaftlichen Verhandlungen eine Rolle gespielt habe.

Einen Tag nach der Freilassung des Lockerbie-Attentäters Abdelbasset Ali Mohammed al-Megrahi aus schottischer Haft hat Libyens Machthaber Muammar al-Gaddafi den schwer krebskranken Ex-Terroristen empfangen. Wie die libysche Nachrichtenagentur Jana am Samstag berichtete, dankte Gaddafi bei dem Treffen der schottischen Regierung für ihren Mut. Bei dem Treffen mit dem 57-jährigen Megrahi und seiner Familie am Freitagabend lobte Gaddafi laut Jana vor allem den „Mut“ der schottischen Behörden. Sie hätten angesichts des „nicht akzeptablen und nicht angemessenen“ Drucks ihre Unabhängigkeit bewiesen. Die US-Regierung und Angehörige der 270 Opfer des Attentats auf ein US-Linienflugzeug über dem schottischen Lockerbie 1988 hatten sich vehement gegen eine Freilassung des Attentäters ausgesprochen.

Gaddafi verglich die Freilassung al Megrahis mit der Freilassung von fünf bulgarischen Krankenschwestern und einem palästinensischen Arzt vor zwei Jahren. Ihnen war vorgeworfen worden, mehr als 400 libysche Kinder vorsätzlich mit HIV infiziert zu haben.

Der libysche Staatschef bedankte sich dem Bericht zufolge auch beim britischen Premierminister Gordon Brown, bei Queen Elizabeth II. und ihrem zweitältesten Sohn Prinz Andrew. Alle drei hätten die schottische Regierung ermutigt, die „historische und mutige Entscheidung“ zu treffen, Megrahi freizulassen. Dieser Schritt werde „positive Auswirkungen“ auf die Beziehungen zwischen beiden Ländern und alle Bereiche der Zusammenarbeit haben, sagte Gaddafi.

Gaddafis Sohn Seif al-Islam hatte zuvor in einem Fernseh-Interview gesagt, dass die Freilassung Megrahis bei wirtschaftlichen Verhandlungen mit Großbritannien eine Rolle gespielt habe. Bei Verhandlungen über Öl- und Gaslieferungen sei auch der Fall des Lockerbie-Attentäters auf den Verhandlungstisch gekommen, sagte Islam, der ein wichtiger Unterhändler in den Gesprächen mit der schottischen Regierung war und Megrahi bei seiner Rückkehr begleitete. >>> | Samstag, 22.
