EU Officials Implicated in Leak of Uber's Ruthless Growth Tactics | DW News

Jul 11, 2022 A joint investigation by DW and more than 40 media outlets has revealed how Uber aggressively lobbied governments and potentially even skirted some laws as it expanded its ride-sharing service.

A trove of leaked documents suggests Uber hid information from investigators in the Netherlands by remotely killing internal devices in its Amsterdam office. It also details the close relationship between Uber and then French Economy Minister Emmanuel Macron at a time when the company was trying to avoid French regulations. Macron gave the company direct access to his staff.

Johnson: Europe Should Be Modeled after the Roman Empire

Jul 2, 2022 French President Macron is making plans for new European cooperation beyond the EU. British Prime Minister Johnson reacted enthusiastically.

BoJo is a tosser! Bringing Turkey into any European community would be an absolute and utter disaster, especially when it is governed by the Islam-leaning, truculent Erdogan. Under Atatürk, it might have been a slightly different story; but Erdogan has been busy over the years unpicking Atatürk’s secular legacy.

But more than this: The European Union needs to remain a Judæo-Christian community, even though it is largely (and correctly) secular. To introduce a country such as Turkey into any form of European community would be asking for trouble. The population of Turkey is approximately 86 million. Does Europe really want to be taken over by Muslims and Islam? Listening to this video talking about BoJo’s crackpot idea of bringing Turkey into the European fold, one really has to ask oneself a fundamental question about Boris: How much of a grip on geo-politics does this man have?

Am I against Islam? No, certainly not! But, having spent years studying Islam and writing on the subject, I do understand it.

We refer to Islam as a religion, but the English word 'religion' does not correctly or accurately capture its meaning. More accurately, it should be called a deen (sometimes din or dean). This is the word that is used in Arabic to describe Islam. One often hears Arabs refer very proudly to the Deen (الْدِّين). Whereas the word 'religion' deals with the private spirituality of the adherent of the the faith, deen encapsulates all aspects of life, the private and the collective. The deen is a religious/spiritual, social, political and economic coherent whole.

Concerning BoJo's half-baked idea... it is little wonder that he wants to bring Turkey into the European family. Turkish blood courses through his veins. Ali Kemal, a newspaper editor, poet and politician, was Boris's great-grandfather. There is an interesting article in Reuters about the Turks welcoming the 'Ottoman grandson' as British leader. These facts should be borne in mind when we listen to the silly ideas that Boris spouts. For your information, BoJo also has Russian blood coursing through his veins; so, does Boris—a quintessential Russian first name if ever I heard one—want to bring Russia into this new-fangled European community as well? What a clown BoJo truly is! – © Mark Alexander

President Macron Loses Majority in Split French Vote - BBC News

Jun 20, 2022 • President Emmanuel Macron has lost control of the French National Assembly following a strong performance by a left alliance and the far right in the elections. His centrist coalition lost dozens of seats in an election that has left French politics fragmented.

The prime minister he had only recently appointed, Elisabeth Borne, who said the situation was unprecedented. "This situation represents a risk for our country, given the risks we're facing nationally and internationally," she said. "We will work as of tomorrow to build a working majority."

French PM under Pressure after Macron’s Alliance Loses Absolute Majority

THE GUARDIAN: Élisabeth Borne faces calls to resign after legislative election result throws French politics into turmoil

France’s prime minister, Élisabeth Borne, is facing calls for her resignation after Emmanuel Macron’s centrist alliance lost its absolute majority in parliament in the legislative election at the weekend.

Borne, who was appointed only a month ago, said the result created an unusual situation that posed “a risk for our country”.

After five years of controlling the Assemblée Nationale, Macron now faces a challenge on delivering key policies, including raising the retirement age and a shake-up of the country’s benefits and welfare system. His government will need to seek alliances and compromises to push measures through.

Macron had insisted before the election that all ministers who lost their seats would have to stand down. Borne, who escaped having to resign by narrowly winning her Normandy constituency, said on Sunday night: “The situation is a risk for our country, given the challenges we have to face at the national and international level. We have to draw the consequences of this vote. » | Kim Willsher and Angelique Chrisafis in Paris | Monday, June 20, 2022

Ukraine Anger as Macron Says 'Don't Humiliate Russia'

Mr Macron told French regional media that Russia's leader had "isolated himself" | EPA

BBC: Ukraine's foreign minister has hit out at French President Emmanuel Macron after he said it was vital that Russia was not humiliated over its invasion.

Mr Macron said it was crucial President Vladimir Putin had a way out of what he called a "fundamental error".

But Dmytro Kuleba said allies should "better focus on how to put Russia in its place" as it "humiliates itself".

Mr Macron has repeatedly spoken to Mr Putin by phone in an effort to broker a ceasefire and negotiations.

Ukraine Bid to Join EU Will Take Decades Says Macron

BBC: It will take decades for Ukraine to be accepted into the European Union, France's Emmanuel Macron has said.

In a speech to the EU's parliament in Strasbourg, he instead suggested Ukraine could join a "parallel European community" while it awaited a decision.

This would allow non-EU members to join Europe's security architecture in other ways, said President Macron.

His words came as fierce fighting continued in the eastern Donbas region, where Russia is trying to make gains. » | BBC | Tuesday, May 10, 2022

Emmanuel Macron’s Win Was Also a Win for French Fashion

THE NEW YORK TIMES: Brigitte Macron continues to champion Louis Vuitton.

Emmanuel Macron’s victory in the French presidential election on Sunday was not just a victory for the young president’s vision of France and its role in the world, or centrism versus the far-right wing, though it was both of those things.

It was also a victory for fashion, especially high fashion, and the role it plays in reflecting French culture and heritage to the world.

If in doubt, simply consider the election night outfit of Brigitte Macron: a custom-made cropped Louis Vuitton navy jacket with silver military detailing and matching pants, perfectly coordinated with her husband’s navy suit. It was a choice that reflected the couple’s united front as well as the ideological battleground the election had become. And it acted as a subtle signal from an administration with a bent toward big business and the free market that those relations will continue to flourish in its second term.

Luxury, after all, has been cozying up to Mr. Macron since his first run for president, in 2017, and Louis Vuitton has been Mrs. Macron’s brand of choice since she became first lady. » | Vanessa Friedman | Published: Monday, April 25, 2022 ; Updated: Wednesday, April 27, 2022

Macron Dodges Tomatoes in Post-election Walkabout

THE GUARDIAN: Triumphant French president promises to listen as he chooses working-class Cergy for first public appearance since vote

Emmanuel Macron narrowly missed being hit by a bag of tomatoes during a surprise visit to a working-class area north of Paris, as he promised a new style of “listening to people” after his re-election as president.

In his first public appearance since Sunday’s vote, Macron strolled around a food market in the town of Cergy, north-west of Paris, shaking hands and posing for selfies. Most people were friendly, some shouted congratulations and others asked for help in finding a job, dealing with health problems or making ends meet.

But at one point there were briefly boos, and a bag of tomatoes was thrown towards Macron’s back but missed. A bodyguard opened an umbrella to shield the president, who quickly sidestepped the projectile and continued to greet people and shake hands.

The Élysée Palace said the trip was Macron’s way of “listening to people’s concerns, expectations and needs”. He told local young people that he wanted to get out on the ground “from the start”. One young woman replied: “Don’t just come here for the photos.” Another onlooker said: “It’s good that he’s getting out of the Élysée.” » | Angelique Chrisafis in Paris | Wednesday, April 27, 2022

Victorious Macron Vows to Unite France after Fending Off Le Pen Threat

THE GUARDIAN: President acknowledges divisions after historic 13 million votes for Le Pen’s anti-immigration party

The pro-European centrist Emmanuel Macron has vowed to unite a divided France after winning a second term as French president in a decisive victory against the far-right’s Marine Le Pen, who nonetheless won more than 13 million votes in a historic high for her anti-immigration party.

Macron became the first French leader to win re-election for 20 years, scoring 58.54% to Le Pen’s 41.46%.

Addressing a victory rally at the foot of the Eiffel Tower, where his supporters waved French and European flags, Macron vowed to respond “efficiently” to the “anger and disagreement” of voters who chose the far right.

“I know that a number of French people have voted for me today, not to support my ideas but to stop the ideas of the far right,” he said and called on supporters to be “kind and respectful” to others, because the country was riven by “so much doubt, so much division”.

He added: “I’m not the candidate of one camp any more, but the president of all of us.” » | Angelique Chrisafis in Paris | Monday, April 25, 2022

Michael Settle: France Leaning to the Far-right Is a Stark Warning for All European Nations

Russian President Vladimir Putin, right, shakes hands with French far-right presidential candidate Marine Le Pen, in the Kremlin in Moscow, Russia, Friday, March 24, 2017. Le Pen has made multiple visits to Russia, as have her father, niece and other[s]

THE HERALD: A disunited France today goes to the polling stations to choose its new or not so new president but as voters in many cases hold their noses, Europe will be holding its breath.

A remarkable intervention ahead of the vote underlined people’s fears that the very future of the European Union could be at stake. In a joint article in Le Monde, the leaders of Germany, Spain and Portugal issued a stark warning to French voters and urged them to back Centrist Emmanuel Macron.

In a direct attack on his rival, Marine Le Pen, they highlighted her previous links to the tyrant in the Kremlin, saying people should not forget “populists and the Far Right in all our countries have made Vladimir Putin an ideological and political model…even if these politicians are now trying to distance themselves from the Russian aggressor”.

They added: “It is a choice between a democratic candidate, who believes France is stronger in a powerful and autonomous EU and a Far Right candidate, who openly sides with those who attack our freedom and democracy; fundamental values that come directly from the French Enlightenment.”

Macron, fiercely pro-EU, wants to strengthen the 27-member bloc while Le Pen, although she has ditched her Frexit ambitions, wants the EU to become more of an association of nation states. » | Michael Settle | Sunday, April 24, 2022

The Debate: Le Pen Confirms Plan to Ban Muslim Headscarf in Public • FRANCE 24 English

Apr 20, 2022 • The far-right candidate has reiterated her pledge to ban headscarves in public spaces, calling them a “symbol of women’s submission”.

“I don’t attack a religion, Islam, which has every right to be in France,” she says. “The real issue is Islamist terrorism. We must pass legislation against the Islamist ideology that is attacking the very foundations of our Republic.”

“I’m not in favour of banning religious symbols in public. Secularism is a freedom,” Macron says. If Le Pen were to implement such a measure, “France, the cradle of the Enlightenment, would be the first country in the world to ban religious symbols in public.”
