THE TELEGRAPH: Sacrifices of British soldiers and their families should be spoken about ‘truthfully’, says Duke
The Duke of Sussex has hit back at Donald Trump, saying the “sacrifices” of British soldiers who served and died in Afghanistan “deserve to be spoken about truthfully and with respect”.
Prince Harry, who served on two front-line tours in Afghanistan and spent 10 years in the British Army, said he had “lost friends” in the conflict and that “thousands of lives were changed forever”.
His intervention came after the Prime Minister denounced the US president for saying Nato troops had “stayed a little back” during two decades of fighting against the Taliban, adding that he would apologise if he had said the words used by Mr Trump. » | Victoria Ward Deputy Royal Editor.
» | Sophie Barkey | Freitag, 23. Januar 2026

Trump Has ‘No Strategy’ on Greenland | Anne Applebaum
Jan 20, 2026 | “We're beyond strategy, where we now have to talk about one man's obsession and maybe madness.”
Donald Trump’s threats to Greenland reflect “one man’s obsession” rather than any coherent foreign-policy strategy, and risk distracting from Russia’s intensifying war in Ukraine, says Pulitzer Prize winning American journalist and historian Anne Applebaum.

Politicians React as Trump Claims NATO Troops Avoided Front Lines | BBC Question Time
Jan 23, 2026 | Following a tense week for European nations over Donald Trump’s threats to Greenland, fresh outrage has been sparked as the US President claimed NATO troops avoided Afghanistan's front line.
Trump told Fox News on Thursday: "They'll say they sent some troops to Afghanistan... and they did, they stayed a little back, a little off the front lines.”
The UK was among several allies to join the US in Afghanistan from 2001, and a total of 457 British service personnel were killed in the conflict.

Europe’s Trust in America Is Fundamentally Damaged | Mark Urban
Jan 22, 2026 | “The Belgian prime minister… was saying ‘we don’t want to live like slaves.’”
The deeper realisation following the World Economic Forum meeting in Davos and Donald Trump’s Greenland manoeuvring is that the US President marks a turning point in Europe’s ability to trust America, says Sunday Times columnist Mark Urban.

Denmark Bristles at Idea of Giving Up Any Sovereignty in Greenland
THE NEW YORK TIMES: American and NATO officials have discussed giving the United States sovereignty over U.S. military bases in Greenland. The Danes don’t seem to like that.
Danish officials pushed back on Thursday against any talk of compromising on the sovereignty of Greenland amid confusion over what kind of deal NATO leaders may have struck with President Trump over the future of the Arctic island.
“We can negotiate on everything political; security, investments, economy. But we cannot negotiate on our sovereignty,” Mette Frederiksen, Denmark’s prime minister, said in a statement on Thursday about Greenland.
Greenland has been part of the Danish kingdom for more than 300 years, and “only Denmark and Greenland themselves can make decisions on issues concerning Denmark and Greenland,” Ms. Frederiksen said. It is not clear whether Denmark’s position could scuttle any possible agreement over Greenland that Mr. Trump said he had reached with Mark Rutte, NATO’s secretary general, on Wednesday evening.
Mr. Trump had been insisting that the United States take over the island, despite resistance from Denmark and Greenland. He did not reveal the details of a possible breakthrough though he called it “the ultimate long term deal.” » | Jeffrey Gettleman, Maya Tekeli and Amelia Nierenberg | Jeffrey Gettleman and Amelia Nierenberg reported from London, and Maya Tekeli from Copenhagen. | Thursday, January 22, 2026
