Giving Trump the Nobel Peace Prize Medal Is ‘Absurd’, Say Norwegian Politicians
THE GUARDIAN: US president criticised for accepting medal awarded to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado
Political leaders in Norway have condemned the Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado’s “absurd” decision to present her Nobel peace prize medal to Donald Trump, accusing the US president of being a “classic showoff” who takes credit for other people’s work.
The Nobel laureate gave her medal to Trump at the White House on Thursday “in recognition [of] his unique commitment [to] our freedom”. Several hours later, Trump wrote on Truth Social that Machado “presented me with her Nobel peace prize for the work I have done. Such a wonderful gesture of mutual respect.”
The Nobel Peace Center said on social media that “a medal can change owners, but the title of a Nobel peace prize laureate cannot”. The organisers of the prize, the Norwegian Nobel Committee and the Norwegian Nobel Institute, had already said that the prize “cannot be revoked, shared or transferred” when Machado first revealed her plan – a sentiment reiterated by the institute on Friday. » | Miranda Bryant, Nordic correspondent | Friday, January 16, 2026
Was María Corina Machado the right person to receive the award in the first place? By giving the award away, she has shown clearly that she undervalued the great honour that had been bestowed upon her. As for Trump accepting her medal, it is difficult to imagine more ungracious behaviour by anyone. Moreover, Trump's acceptance of the medal was the height of naffness! — © Mark Alexander

Iran Plans Permanent Break from Global Internet, Say Activists
THE GUARDIAN: Report claims unrestricted online access will be a ‘government privilege’, limited to individuals vetted by regime
Iran is planning to permanently break from the global internet, only allowing individuals vetted by the regime to connect online, according to Iranian digital rights activists.
“A confidential plan is under way to turn international internet access into a ‘governmental privilege’,” according to a report from Filterwatch, an organisation monitoring Iran’s internet censorship, citing a number of sources in Iran.
“State media and government spokespersons have already signaled that this is a permanent shift, warning that unrestricted access will not return after 2026.”
Under the plan, Iranians who had security clearance or passed government checks would have access to a filtered version of the global internet, said Amir Rashidi, the leader of Filterwatch. All other Iranians would be allowed to access only the national internet: a domestic, parallel internet cut off from the broader world. » | Aisha Down | Saturday, January 17, 2026

Chris Hedges: Grand Illusion
Troops and Vessels from European NATO Allies Arrive in Greenland | BBC News
Jan 16, 2026 | Troops and ships from several European states are gathering in Greenland. The limited deployment involves Germany, France, Sweden, Norway, Finland, the Netherlands and the UK.
US President Donald Trump says the US needs to "own" Greenland to prevent Russia and China from doing so. Greenland's Prime Minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, said this week that the territory was in the midst of a geopolitical crisis, and that if his people were asked to make a choice they would choose Denmark over the US.

Trust in the United States at an All-time Low | Michael Carpenter
Jan 16, 2026 | “President Trump is rewriting the global order and changing the rules that are familiar to both our allies and adversaries alike,” said Michael Carpenter, Senior Fellow for Transatlantic Affairs at the International Institute for Strategic Studies who joined us on TVP World’s World News Tonight.
The U.S. has said it wants to acquire Greenland and Donald Trump won’t take the use of military force off the table. This has many EU and NATO countries alarmed and wondering what’s next for the future of trans-Atlantic relations.

Meanwhile, media reports say the United States is increasing its military presence in the Middle East by sending an aircraft carrier. The Pentagon has not confirmed the deployment.
