Nicolas Sarkozy Given Five-year Prison Sentence after Libya Trial
THE GUARDIAN: Former French president found guilty of criminal conspiracy after being accused of pact with Gaddafi regime
The former French president Nicolas Sarkozy said he would “sleep in jail but with my head held high” after receiving a five-year prison sentence – the first time a former head of state has been sent to prison in modern French history – for criminal conspiracy.
The verdict and sentencing followed a trial in which he and his aides were accused of making a corruption pact with the regime of the late Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi to receive funding for the 2007 French presidential election campaign.
In a surprise ruling, the head judge, Nathalie Gavarino, handed down a special form of sentence that means Sarkozy, 70, will have to serve a prison term even if he appeals. She justified the conviction and sentencing on the grounds the offences were of “exceptional gravity” and “likely to undermine citizens’ trust.”
The start of Sarkozy’s sentence will be set at a later date, with prosecutors given a month to inform the former head of state when he should go to prison.
The judge also ordered Sarkozy to pay a €100,000 (£87,000) fine. » | Angelique Chrisafis in Paris | Thursday, September 25, 2025

Trump Just Insulted Almost All World Leaders, to Their Faces, But What Does It Mean?
Sep 25, 2025 | How to make sense of the last two weeks?
Because it isn’t just that Russia has stepped up its global aggression by invading the airspace of various European countries with drones, fighter jets and a surveillance plane.
It’s also the tirade US President Donald Trump let rip yesterday to 150 world leaders at the United Nations – a blistering one, even for him. And his silence after King Charles rolled out the red carpet for him in the UK.
Today, international and political editor Peter Hartcher helps us connect the dots, which he says amount to “the early days of a transformation of the planet”.

Farage Hits Back after Ed Davey Warns against Letting 'Trump's America' Become 'Farage's Britain'
Sep 23, 2025 | Sir Ed Davey warned that the UK has a choice between "the real change people crave" or "change towards Trump's America" at his party's conference in Bournemouth.
The Lib Dem leader claimed that under Farage's Reform UK government, healthcare will be privatised, climate change will go unaddressed, gun control laws will be "rolled back,” social media barons will be "free to poison young minds” and the the government will "trample on our basic rights and freedoms."
"Trump's America. Don't let it become Farage's Britain," he declared.
The Reform UK leader hit back saying the Liberal Democrat leader was "obsessed" with him and that he would be "happy to pay for a psychiatrist".
Sir Ed Davey is absolutely right of course. Nigel Fags is Trump's little clone, his little poodle — a man who would denude Britain of all of the assets left, and of all that is good about our country. Nigel Fags ruined the economy with that STUPID and NONSENSICAL Brexit. But were he able to become PM, the damage he would do to this country would be INCALCULABLE. It takes a special kind of MORON to advocate ECONOMIC SUICIDE for one's own country! And that is EXACTLY what he did with Brexit. The British electorate should have learnt its lesson with that ridiulous move. It is to be hoped that it has. For God's sake, it is also to be hoped that the electorate doesn't repeat the mistake of giving him a second chance, just as the American electorate has STUPIDLY given Trump a second chance to ruin America. 🙏 — © Mark Alexander

Farage in Danger If He Keeps 'Copying Memes' from Trump | Adam Boulton
Sep 24, 2025 | "It may just be that the British public looks at this in a different way and think this is not credible, this does happen."
Farage's claim that migrants are eating swans will backfire and come off as "meme copying" Trump, says Times Radio's Adam Boulton.
