UK Preparing to Recognise Palestinian State as Early as Friday

THE GUARDIAN: Move comes after Israel fails to meet UK conditions that would have postponed step

The UK is preparing to recognise the state of Palestine as early as Friday, after Israel failed to meet conditions that would have postponed the historic step, including a ceasefire in Gaza.

Keir Starmer insisted the timing of the UK announcement had nothing to do with Donald Trump’s visit, even though the US president said at a press conference that he disagreed with Britain’s decision, without elaborating.

Recognition will bring a wave of criticism from Israel, including claims that it is a reward for Hamas and terrorism, a charge the UK rejects by saying it envisages only a Palestinian state in which Hamas is disarmed, plays no part in the future government, and the leadership of the Palestinian Authority is subject to elections within a year.

Starmer emphasised there would be no place for Hamas, insisting the group were terrorists, and adding he agreed with Trump on the need for a roadmap.

The UK prime minister said recognition was “part of that overall package which hopefully takes us from the appalling situation we’re in now to the outcome of a safe and secure Israel, which we do not have, and a viable Palestinian state”. » | Patrick Wintour, Diplomatic editor | Thursday, September 18, 2025

Trump Turns Fire on Putin and Lauds UK in Press Conference with Starmer

THE GUARDIAN: US president also advises PM to use military to stop irregular migration at conclusion of his second state visit

Donald Trump has accused Vladimir Putin of letting him down in a joint press conference with Keir Starmer during which the US president piled criticism on his Russian counterpart.

Trump said on Thursday that he had hoped to broker a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine soon after entering office, but that Putin’s actions had prevented him from doing so.

His comments came during an hour-long press conference alongside Starmer which marked the culmination of a two-day state visit during which the president has largely steered clear of several points of tension between the two leaders.

Trump largely avoided criticising the prime minister over Palestinian statehood or attacking Britain on free speech, though he caused awkwardness when he suggested Starmer could bring in the army to deal with irregular migration.

His comments about the Russian president, however, will delight British officials who had hoped to use the unprecedented second state visit to isolate Putin on the world stage. » | Kiran Stacey and Pippa Crerar | Thursday, September 18, 2025

Conservatives Demand Trump Admin Violently Suppress the Left to Avenge Charlie Kirk

Sep 18, 2025 | Charlie Kirk’s death is shaping up to be a modern-day Reichstag fire. Trump’s administration is vowing to crack down on the “radical left,” but it might not be enough for some right-wing influencers who are demanding violence to avenge Kirk. Their rhetoric has caused some to question if we’re heading towards an outright “ban” on the Democratic Party altogether. In this video we’ll debunk the lies being used to justify suppressing the left.

Warum Trump die New York Times vernichten will

» | Michael Maier | Donnerstag, 18. 'This Is Only Heading One Way': Simon Marks on Kimmel's Suspension

Sep 18, 2025 | Simon Marks joins James O'Brien to discuss the direction that late-night talk shows in America might be heading.

Jimmy Kimmel's late-night talk show has been pulled off the air by ABC after the host made comments about the shooting of right-wing influencer Charlie Kirk.

A spokesperson for the Disney-owned network revealed the show would be "pre-empted indefinitely" following remarks made on a broadcast earlier this week.

Bernie Sanders RIPS Jimmy Kimmel Suspension: Now We're Closer to 'Authoritarianism'

Sep 8, 2025 | “This country is rapidly moving toward an authoritarian form of society. In authoritarian countries—like Russia and Saudi Arabia—you do not have a media that is allowed to be critical of the government,” says Sen. Bernie Sanders, on how ABC paused Jimmy Kimmel's show after Trump's FCC chair threatened the network.

Hungry Man Kitchen: Stuffed Meatloaf the Turkish Way: Dalyan Kofte

Apr 14, 2023 | Almost every country has a version of meatloaf and although not the most famous dish in Turkish cuisine, the Turkish-style meatloaf “Dalyan Kofte” deserves a mention as it is an important part of the traditional restaurant culture. Rumor has it that the famous Ottoman explorer, Evliya Celebi, mentioned this dish as “Talyan Kofte” (after seeing the Italian meatloaf / polpettone during his travels), supposedly referring to Italian by the word “Talyan” which in time was changed to “Dalyan Kofte”. Nevertheless it’s a wholesame savory dish in Turkey and usually served with potato puree and pilafs.

Anti-Austerity Strikes and Protests Grip France

THE NEW YORK TIMES: Barely a week into the job, Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu faces rising social unrest on top of political deadlock and financial turmoil.

Big anti-austerity street marches and labor strikes gripped France on Thursday, raising the pressure faced by Sébastien Lecornu, the country’s new prime minister, as he tries to pass a debt-reducing budget by the end of the year.

Teachers, railway workers, students and civil servants were among the hundreds of thousands taking part in the demonstrations and walkouts across France, which in recent weeks has experienced renewed political turmoil and growing concern over its precarious finances.

Demonstrators marched through the streets of Lyon, Marseille, Nantes, Nice and other cities under the close watch of the riot police. The authorities have blanketed the country with 80,000 security officers to help contain potential violence and vandalism.

The protests were organized by labor unions angered by the plans of François Bayrou, Mr. Lecornu’s predecessor, to cut 44 billion euros, about $51 billion, from next year’s state budget. Mr. Bayrou was ousted by lawmakers last week and President Emmanuel Macron replaced him with Mr. Lecornu, a centrist and an ally.

But the anger over Mr. Bayrou’s cost-cutting has persisted. It was not immediately clear whether Mr. Lecornu, who had promised a “break” with the past, would scrap his predecessor’s plans or use them as a basis for lawmakers to amend.

Labor unions say that anything resembling Mr. Bayrou’s budget — which planned to freeze welfare payments at their current level — would place an unacceptable burden on lower- and middle-class workers while sparing the wealthy. » | Aurelien Breeden | Reporting from Paris | Thursday, September 18, 2025

Macrons to Submit Scientific Evidence to US Court to Prove Brigitte Was Not Born a Man

THE GUARDIAN: French president and wife allege rightwing influencer Candace Owens is using defamatory attacks against them to boost media profile

The French president, Emmanuel Macron, and his wife plan to present scientific evidence to a US court to prove that Brigitte Macron was not born a man, the lawyer representing them in a defamation suit has said.

The couple filed the suit in July against Candace Owens, a rightwing influencer, and her business, alleging continuing defamatory attacks against them in order to boost the profile of her media platform, gain more audience and make money.

Owens said last year she would “stake [her] entire professional reputation on the fact that Brigitte Macron is in fact a man” named Jean-Michel Trogneux, and has since doubled down on the false claim, including in an eight-part podcast series.

The Macrons’ lawyer, Tom Clare, of the law firm Clare Locke, which has won several high-profile defamation cases, told the BBC’s Fame under Fire podcast that Brigitte Macron had found the claims “incredibly upsetting” and they were a “distraction” for the French president. » | Jon Henley, Europe correspondent |Thursday, September 18, 2025
