Behind Castle Walls, the Rich and Powerful Celebrate Trump

THE NEW YORK TIMES: The seating chart at the state dinner for President Trump was a cross-section of the rich and the powerful hoping to get on his good side.

As beggars’ banquets go, this one was pretty rich.

There they sat, side-by-side, some of the wealthiest, most influential and best connected people in the world, all together at one long table inside a nearly-thousand-year-old castle. The guest of honor was in the middle of the table, wearing white tie, looking happier than ever. He was being treated like a king by an actual king.

The state dinner that King Charles III hosted for President Trump on Wednesday night at Windsor Castle seemed like a new apex for Mr. Trump: a glittering showcase of the powerful outdoing themselves to get (or remain) on the good side of a president whose second term has been marked by demonstrations of brute power. Those demonstrations have increasingly taken the form of retribution against perceived enemies at home and tattered alliances abroad.

“The bond between our two nations is indeed a remarkable one,” said Charles. “In renewing our bond tonight, we do so with unshakable trust in our friendship and in our shared commitment to independence and liberty.”

The president seemed supremely pleased by the whole thing; he didn’t look the least bit bothered when the king used his speech to gently prod about environmental issues and the need to support Ukraine.

Mr. Trump got up and cooed: “It’s a singular privilege to be the first American president welcomed here.” (Other U.S. presidents have been welcomed at Windsor — including Mr. Trump in his first term — albeit not at a state dinner. Usually these dinners happen at Buckingham Palace back in London, but that old pile is undergoing renovations.) » | Shawn McCreesh and Maggie Haberman | Shawn McCreesh reported from Windsor Castle and Maggie Haberman from London. | Wednesday, September 17, 2025

“The banquet table was also lined with power brokers from the worlds of technology, finance and media.” Take a peek here.

Jimmy Kimmel Live! Suspended Indefinitely after Host’s Charlie Kirk Comments

THE GUARDIAN: ABC says late-night show will not air for foreseeable future after Kimmel accused Republicans of ‘doing everything they can to score political points’ from Kirk’s killing

Jimmy Kimmel Live! will be suspended “indefinitely” after the late-night host’s comments about the killing of Charlie Kirk, ABC has announced, hours after the Trump-appointed chair of the US broadcast regulator threatened to take away the broadcaster’s license.

The network, which Disney owns, announced on Wednesday night that it would remove Kimmel’s show from its schedule for the foreseeable future.

“Jimmy Kimmel Live! will be preempted indefinitely,” an ABC spokesperson said in a statement. Pre-empting means ABC will broadcast another show in the slot instead.

Donald Trump later called the move “great news for America” and congratulated ABC for its “courage” in a social media post. “That leaves Jimmy and Seth, two total losers, on Fake News NBC,” he added, in an apparent threat to the shows of NBC late-night hosts Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers, and two months after the cancellation of Stephen Colbert’s show. » | Sian Cain | Thursday, September 18, 2025

Very strong language alert! PLEASE NOTE that I am terribly sorry about this FOUL LANGUAGE. I dislike it every bit as much as you do. Fact is, however, that if I stopped posting American videos because of foul language, there’d be few videos for me to post! The standard of the use of language in the USA has gone down the tubes, just like America itself has! These two women have great insights into what is happening in the States right now, despite their use of filthy language. Why Is Donald Trump Becoming the First World Leader to Be Bestowed with a 2nd State Visit to the UK?

Sep 16. 2025 | US President Donald Trump is due to arrive in the United Kingdom on Tuesday evening at the invitation of King Charles III and Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Starmer's office said the visit will show that "the UK-US relationship is the strongest in the world, built on 250 years of history." Senior US officials said on Monday that deals covering energy and technology worth more than $10 billion would be announced. The two countries are expected to sign an agreement to work together on boosting nuclear power.

What else is on the agenda for Trump's second UK visit?

On Wednesday, the US president and his wife, Melania, will be treated to British royal pageantry at Windsor Castle. Charles, Queen Camilla, Prince William, and Princess Catherine will accompany them on a carriage procession through the estate. A state banquet, a flypast by military aircraft, and a gun salute are also planned. On Thursday, Starmer will host Trump at his Chequers country residence in the southern English countryside. The two leaders are expected to discuss the tariffs on British steel imports to the US.

European Commission Calls for Freezing of Free Trade with Israel over Gaza

THE GUARDIAN: EU executive also seeks sanctions on two Israeli ministers, but may struggle to secure majority approval required

The EU executive has called for a suspension of free trade with Israel and sanctions on two far-right Israeli ministers in response to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

Ursula von der Leyen had already floated the proposal to suspend the trade parts of the EU-Israel association agreement last week as the European Commission faced intense pressure for greater action amid criticism that it was not using its economic leverage to influence the Israeli government.

There is, however, no certain majority from EU member states for the proposals outlined on Wednesday, because Germany, one of Israel’s key allies, has long been reluctant to take such steps.

The proposals include suspending Israel’s preferential access to the European market by reimposing tariffs on some goods, and freezing mutual benefits related to bidding for public contracts and the protection of intellectual property rights.
The commission also called for sanctions on Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich, violent Israeli settlers in the West Bank and 10 Hamas leaders. » | Jennifer Rankin in Brussels | Wednesday, September 17, 2025
