LGBTQ+ Rights Activist Found Dead in Florida Landfill

ADVOCATE: Jorge Diaz-Johnston and his husband were one of six couples who successfully challenged Florida's ban on same-sex marriage in 2014.

Authorities in Florida are investigating the death of Jorge Diaz-Johnston, an LGBTQ+ activist who won a landmark court case in Miami-Dade County against the state’s ban on same-sex marriages. He was 54.

Diaz-Johnston vanished from Tallahassee January 3, according to Miami TV station WPLG. Detectives found his remains in a trash pile at a landfill Saturday morning in Jackson County, Fla., which is west of Tallahassee.

Police are treating the case as a homicide.

Investigators said in a release that the trash Diaz-Johnston's remains were found in came from a metal bay at another landfill. They added that any person or company has access to it.

Diaz-Johnston and his husband, Don Johnston, were one of six couples who successfully sued the Miami-Dade County Clerk’s Office after the office denied them marriage licenses in 2014.

Dans ce volet : l’armistice proclamé le 11 novembre 1918 acte la défaite de l'Allemagne. Sous-officier de la marine du Kaiser et communiste, Hans Beimler refuse une mission absurde et participe à la mutinerie des marins de Kiel, prélude à l'effondrement de l'Empire allemand. Marina Yurlova, ex-enfant-soldat qui s’est battue pour le tsar, est sauvée par deux fois du peloton d’exécution par un officier tchèque et s'enfuit pour échapper à l'Armée rouge. Gerade einmal zwei Wochen ist es her, dass sich (nicht nur amerikanische) Medien süffisant zurücklehnten angesichts des Schuldspruchs gegen die schöne Ghislaine Maxwell, die Komplizin des pädophilen Sexualstraftäters Jeffrey Epstein. Nun wurde vergangene Woche die Zivilklage von Virginia Giuffre gegen Prinz Andrew entgegen den juristischen Bemühungen seiner Anwälte von einem New Yorker Gericht für zulässig erklärt. Die «Tagesschau» des Schweizer Fernsehens leitete den Bericht darüber ein mit dem Satz: «Es gab eine Zeit, da waren die Reichen und Mächtigen unantastbar, wo es gang und gäbe war, sich mit Deals aus der Affäre zu ziehen.» Aber der Reichtum ist hier nicht das Obszöne, sondern der Missbrauch.

Und tun wir jetzt wirklich so, als wäre Missbrauch vorwiegend ein Problem der Upper Class? Geht es in dieser Debatte vor allem um Genugtuung und ein bisschen Häme darüber, dass auch Prominente und Verwöhnte für ihre Vergehen bestraft werden? Und dann den Deckel drauf?

Das wäre eine verhängnisvolle Sichtweise, denn just der Prozess gegen Maxwell sollte im Kontext von #MeToo vor allem als ein Zeichen gewertet werden, das da lautet: Auch Zuschauer, Mitwisser, Mittäter, die Tätern Hilfe oder Schutz geben, werden unerbittlich strafrechtlich verfolgt. » | Claudia Schwartz | Montag, 17. Jan 17, 2022 • People have been rallying in cities across the UK to protest against a new bill they say is an attack on the right to demonstrate. The controversial 'police and crime bill' would grant police greater powers to crack down on disruptive protests, but critics say it will also make it more difficult to hold peaceful demonstrations.

In a statement, the Home Office told DW: "Freedom to protest within the law is a fundamental part of our democracy, but the police must swiftly deal with the selfish minority of protestors whose actions endanger the public (...)."

The UK government is targeting environmental activists. It wants to stop disruptive protest. Public nuisance will be a new offense, carrying a maximum penalty of up to ten years in prison or an unlimited fine. And that's highly controversial.

NGOs and human rights groups have staged many protests. They see the bill as an attack on democracy itself. And even conservative legal observers like the former attorney general are concerned.

Die Zahl der Geburten in China ist zum fünften Mal in Folge deutlich gesunken. Laut den am Montag veröffentlichten Daten des chinesischen Statistikamts wurden im vergangenen Jahr in der Volksrepublik nur noch 10,62 Millionen Kinder geboren. Das bedeutet einen Rückgang gegenüber dem Vorjahr um 10,5 Prozent. Es ist die geringste Zahl an Neugeborenen seit der Gründung der Volksrepublik im Jahr 1949. Auf tausend Einwohner kamen 7,52 Geburten. Zum Vergleich: In Deutschland liegt die Rate bei 9,4.

Die extrem hohen Kosten für Bildung, Kinderbetreuung und Wohnen in Chinas Metropolen ist der meistgenannte Grund für den Rückgang. Eine Rolle spielen auch die veränderten Einstellungen junger Frauen, die dank höherer Bildungsabschlüsse finanziell unabhängiger sind und es nicht eilig haben, ihre Autonomie für Ehemann und Kinder einzuschränken. Die Zahl der Eheschließungen geht seit sieben Jahren kontinuierlich zurück. BELGRADE, Serbia — When Covid-19 reached Eastern Europe in the spring of 2020, a Serbian journalist reported a severe shortage of masks and other protective equipment. She was swiftly arrested, thrown in a windowless cell and charged with inciting panic.

The journalist, Ana Lalic, was quickly released and even got a public apology from the government in what seemed like a small victory against old-style repression by Serbia’s authoritarian president, Aleksandar Vucic.

But Ms. Lalic was then vilified for weeks as a traitor by much of the country’s news media, which has come increasingly under the control of Mr. Vucic and his allies as Serbia adopts tactics favored by Hungary and other states now in retreat from democracy across Europe’s formerly communist eastern fringe.

“For the whole nation, I became a public enemy,” she recalled.

Serbia no longer jails or kills critical journalists, as happened under the rule of Slobodan Milosevic in the 1990s. It now seeks to destroy their credibility and ensure few people see their reports.

The muting of critical voices has greatly helped Mr. Vucic — and also the country’s most well-known athlete, the tennis star Novak Djokovic, whose visa travails in Australia have been portrayed as an intolerable affront to the Serb nation. A little over a month ago, the prime minister told the House of Commons that he shared the anger of a nation at seeing a video of his Number 10 staff making light of lockdown measures and joking about Christmas parties. We were supposed to believe that a culture of impunity and disregard for rules at the heart of government had absolutely nothing to do with Boris Johnson; that he was as shocked by the hypocrisy as the rest of us. It was always a ludicrous contention that the prime minister had no idea what was going on in his own office, part of the same complex as his own residence. And in the last week the full extent of the sheer gall of a leader prepared to throw his staff under a bus to evade accountability for the worst sort of political hypocrisy has been exposed.

Revelation after revelation has emerged since the start of the year – as Johnson must have known they inevitably would – that rubbishes that statement he made to MPs last month. We now know that in May 2020, Johnson was giving a speech at a social gathering, with drink and food, in the Downing Street garden the very same evening ministers were warning the public at a press conference that they could only meet one other person outside. That his staff were throwing not one, but two, raucous parties that reportedly left items in the garden damaged the night before Prince Philip’s funeral. And that Downing Street staff regularly held drinks parties on Fridays that Johnson would often drop into, giving them the prime ministerial seal of approval. » | Editorial | Saturday, January 15, 2022

The Duke of Sussex believes the UK is too dangerous for him and his family to visit without state protection, as it emerged he is taking legal action against the government to allow him to pay privately for police security while in Britain.

Prince Harry lost taxpayer-funded police security when he and Meghan stepped back from royal duties in 2020. The couple pay for private security in the US, where they now live.

Harry is seeking a judicial review against a Home Office decision that prevents him personally paying for police protection for him and his family while in the UK. His legal representative said the duke’s private security team did not have adequate jurisdiction abroad or access to UK intelligence information required to protect him, his wife, and their children, Archie and Lilibet. Ständig wechselnde Regierungen werden zwischen Extremisten von Links und Rechts zerrieben. Kommunisten und Nationalsozialisten liefern sich blutige Straßenschlachten. Am 30. Januar 1933 wird Adolf Hitler zum Reichskanzler ernannt.

Die Massenarbeitslosigkeit infolge der Weltwirtschaftskrise erreicht 1932 ihren Höhepunkt. In Deutschland kämpft die Weimarer Republik ums Überleben. Am 30. Januar 1933 wird Adolf Hitler zum Reichskanzler ernannt. Der Reichstagsbrand Ende Februar 1933 dient dem Regime als Vorwand für die Zerschlagung der KPD. Jüdische Bürger sehen sich massiven Repressalien ausgesetzt. Hans Beimler ist 1932 für die KPD in den Reichstag eingezogen. Doch nach dem Reichstagsbrand muss er abtauchen. Beimler wird verraten und in das KZ Dachau verschleppt. Dort wird er brutal gefoltert. Die Lage scheint aussichtslos, doch dann bietet sich eine Chance zur Flucht. Rudolf Höß hat geheiratet, eine Familie gegründet und lebt als Landarbeiter in Pommern. Er übernimmt die Führung des völkischen Artamanen-Bundes vor Ort. Da begegnet er Heinrich Himmler, der ihn für die SS-Totenkopfverbände gewinnt. Wenig später tritt Höß eine Stelle als Aufseher im KZ Dachau an. Nach erfolgreichen Jahren in Hollywood hat Pola Negri in der Weltwirtschaftskrise ihr Vermögen verloren. Auch ihr erster Tonfilm ist ein Flop. Die deutsche Filmindustrie will den ehemaligen Star für deutsche Produktionen gewinnen. Trotz Warnungen ihres Vertrauten Ernst Lubitsch lässt sich Pola Negri auf das Geschäft ein. Unity Mitford, Tochter einer britischen Adelsfamilie, schwärmt für Adolf Hitler. Sie gehört zu der wachsenden Gruppe von Briten, die sich für den Faschismus begeistern – im Gegensatz zu ihrer jüngeren Schwester Jessica, die eine überzeugte Kommunistin ist. Ihr Vater, Lord Redesdale, erlaubt Unity eine Reise nach Deutschland.

Die Menschen kaufen massenhaft auf Pump und spekulieren mit Aktien. Mit dem Schwarzen Freitag 1929 zerplatzt der Traum vom Aufschwung. Banken, Warenhäuser und Betriebe brechen zusammen.

Während eine kleine Oberschicht die Goldenen Zwanziger genießt, leben in den Armenvierteln Millionen Menschen im Elend. Nach dem Schwarzen Freitag 1929 brechen Banken zusammen, es folgen Warenhäuser und Betriebe. Der Geschäftsmann Marcel Jamet eröffnet in Paris das Edelbordell „One Two Two“, das zum Treffpunkt von Politikern, Militärs und internationalen Stars wird. Als sich einer seiner Geldgeber das Leben nimmt, muss er mit dem Geheimdienst kooperieren, um sein Bordell durch die Wirtschaftskrise zu bringen. Hans Beimler kommt aus dem Gefängnis und engagiert sich erneut für den Kommunismus. Er verliebt sich in eine junge Genossin. Beimlers Frau Magdalena begeht Selbstmord, die Partei nimmt ihm daraufhin beide Kinder weg. Elise Ottesen ist inzwischen Schwedens bekannteste Kämpferin für sexuelle Aufklärung und Frauenrechte. Sie hält landesweit Vorträge über Sexualität und Empfängnisverhütung. Sie hat Erfolg. Doch dann beginnt ihr langjähriger Lebensgefährte eine Affäre mit der 18-jährigen Alfa. Silvio Crespi ist es gelungen, sein Firmenimperium weiter auszubauen – mit Hilfe hoher Kredite. Infolge der massiven Aufwertung der Lira durch Mussolini brechen aber die Exporte ein. Ein Großauftrag der Regierung bringt noch einmal Hoffnung. Doch dann fordern die Banken den Kredit zurück. Die Österreicherin Edith Wellspacher wird als eine der ersten Frauen in Wien zum Medizinstudium zugelassen. Sie erträgt die Anfeindungen durch Mitstudenten und Professoren und hungert oft tagelang, um das Studium finanzieren zu können. Da begegnet sie dem jüdischen Assistenzarzt Max Wachstein.
