German Chancellor Says There Cannot Be 'Dictated Peace' for Ukraine | DW News

Feb 17, 2025 | European leaders have been holding an emergency meeting in Paris concerning their role in Ukraine, amid fears that they can no longer rely on their security alliance with the US. Germany's chancellor said that Europe will keep supporting Ukraine, and that peace terms cannot be dictated to Kyiv. He also said he was irritated about talk of sending peacekeeping troops to Ukraine, saying it was premature. French President Emmanuel Macron called the meeting after the Trump administration left the Europeans out of direct negotiations with Russia on ending the Ukraine war.

Scholz Rebukes JD Vance, Reaffirms Support for Ukraine | DW News

Feb 15, 2025 | German Chancellor Olaf Scholz opened his speech at the Munich Security Conference with a sharp rebuke of far-right and anti-democratic forces, sending a strong message of opposition to Germany's AfD party and anyone from abroad who supports it.

It was a clear message directed at the US and Donald Trump's administration, whose main advisor, billionaire donor Elon Musk, has openly declared support for AfD. Scholz said in Munich that Germany would not accept outside intervention in its elections. "That is not appropriate — especially not among friends and allies," he added.

The German Chancellor said that the defense of democracy against fascism and authoritarianism has been the foundation of the transatlantic relationship and called for maintaining this principle.

UK, US and Allies Offer Israel ‘Steadfast Support’ in Joint Statement

GUARDIAN INTERNATIONAL: Quint group – which also includes France, Germany and Italy – says ‘terrorist actions’ of Hamas must be ‘universally condemned’

The leaders of the UK, US, France, Germany and Italy have released a joint statement expressing “steadfast and united support” for the state of Israel and “unequivocal condemnation” of Hamas.

It follows an unprecedented attack on Israel from Gaza on Saturday by the Palestinian militant group, with Israel responding with airstrikes and a “complete siege” of the Gaza Strip.

The statement was released after a call between the UK prime minister, Rishi Sunak; the US president, Joe Biden; the French president, Emmanuel Macron; the German chancellor, Olaf Scholz; and the Italian prime minister, Giorgia Meloni. Together the five countries comprise the Quint international organisation.

“We make clear that the terrorist actions of Hamas have no justification, no legitimacy, and must be universally condemned,” the statement reads. “There is never any justification for terrorism. » | Hayden Vernon | Monday, October 9, 2023
