THE NEW YORK TIMES: At the Munich Security Conference, Olaf Scholz accused the U.S. vice president of unacceptable interference in Germany’s coming elections.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz of Germany on Saturday accused Vice President JD Vance of unacceptably interfering in his country’s imminent elections on behalf of a party that has played down the atrocities committed by the Nazis 80 years ago.
A day after Mr. Vance stunned the Munich Security Conference by telling German leaders to drop their so-called firewall and allow the hard-right Alternative for Germany, or AfD, to enter their federal government, Mr. Scholz accused Mr. Vance of effectively violating a commitment to never again allow Germany to be led by fascists who could repeat the horrors of the Holocaust.
“A commitment to ‘never again’ is not reconcilable with support for the AfD,” Mr. Scholz said at the conference on Saturday morning, in an address opening the gathering’s second day.
Mr. Scholz said the AfD had trivialized Nazi atrocities like the concentration camp at Dachau, which Mr. Vance visited on Friday. The chancellor said Germany “would not accept” directives from outsiders about how to run its democracy — and certainly not to work with such a party. » | Jim Tankersley | Reporting from Munich | Saturday, February 15, 2025
A Secret Diary Chronicled the ‘Satanic World’ That Was Dachau: For two years, a prisoner in the German concentration camp kept a journal that would later be used to convict those who had persecuted him and killed his fellow prisoners. »
– © Mark Alexander

German Chancellor Scholz 'Disgusted' By Elon Musk | 10 News First
Jan 28, 2025 | German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has called out Elon Musk for his comments during an AfD (Alternative für Deutschland), Germany's far-right party, election campaign event on January 25.
Musk said that Germany's current population should not feel guilt for the country's past, referring to the nation's Nazi history.
"I think there's, like, frankly too much of a focus on past guilt (in Germany), and we need to move beyond that," Musk said via video link at the rally.
"Children should not be guilty of the sins of their parents, or even let alone their parents, their great grandparents."
Musk made headlines recently when he appeared to perform a Nazi salute on stage at an inauguration event for US President Donald Trump.
Scholz said Musk's comments were "disgusting", especially in the wake of the Holocaust remembrance movements in recent days.

Olaf Scholz: German Election ‘Will Not Be Decided by Social Media Owners’
THE GUARDIAN: Chancellor’s New Year’s Eve address follows Elon Musk’s endorsement of German far-right party AfD on X
The German chancellor, Olaf Scholz, has urged voters not to let the “owners of social media channels” decide next year’s snap election, after Elon Musk repeatedly endorsed the far-right party Alternative für Deutschland (AfD).
In a New Year’s Eve address recorded for television and made available before its broadcast on Tuesday, Scholz said German citizens alone had the power to decide “where Germany goes from here” after the general election on 23 February.
“It will not be decided by the owners of social media channels,” Scholz said of the country’s future.
“In our debates, one can be forgiven for sometimes thinking the more extreme an opinion is, the more attention it will garner.” Rather, Scholz said, the fate of German society “will be up to the vast majority of reasonable and decent people”. » | Deborah Cole in Berlin | Tuesday December 31, 2024
