Nature of the Beast | Planet Finance (1/6)

Aug 1, 2023 | For most, Planet Finance is a complex, influential world that only becomes visible when crashes occur in the financial markets. Stock market prices quickly shot back up on Planet Finance during the COVID pandemic, while the inhabitants of planet Earth were still sweeping the shards together.

The contrast could hardly be greater. But how does such a market emerge? Through interviews including the founder of the market in oil futures, one of the first traders and a neuropsychologist who mentally guides stock traders and hedge fund managers in making risky decisions, it becomes clear how Planet Finance grew into what it is today.

The Brexit Scandal | Corruption in the UK | Documentary | British Political System

Aug 7, 2023 | The Brexit Scandal - What if Brexit was ultimately not about the “will of the people” at all, but about the interests of a small British elite?

The Brexit Scandal (2021) Director: Tom Costello
Genre: Documentary
Country: Germany
Language: English
Also Known As: Power, Profit and Populism: The Battle for Hard Brexit
Release Date: 2021 Germany (Raindance Film Festival)

Synopsis: Brexit was presented as a populist revolution against the elite. But in the years since the referendum, a group of men deep in the heart of the British establishment have been carrying out a coup of a different kind – using Brexit to try and turn Britain into a low-tax, low regulation, high finance utopia. This revolution is funded by dark money – cash from unknown sources – which has been flooding into the British political system through mysterious front groups, opaque offshore firms, clandestine digital campaigns and corporate lobbyists in disguise.

Today dark money and shadowy influence operations continue to push an agenda that is anything but popular, and is deeply undemocratic.

In this film, we follow the dark money trails to find out: who are the men who bought Brexit, and what is their vision for Britain’s future?

The Vatican and the Third Reich: An Unholy Alliance

Jun 8, 2023 | In the midst of WWII, Catholics looked to the pope to guide them. Hitler had already begun secretly launching his plan to exterminate the Jews of Europe. Secretly, that is, to most- except Pope Pius XII. The pope remained silent whilst the rest of the world awaited any kind of grand gesture or speech condemning Hitler’s atrocities.

He chose to keep quiet in the face of the crimes committed by the Nazis throughout Europe, crimes that even took place below the Pope’s own windows, like the 1943 liquidation of the Jewish Ghetto in Rome, to which the pope made no official reaction.

At first glance, Nazism and Catholicism are diametrically opposed. The Vatican even seems an institution beyond all suspicion. The Church, however, faced in turn with the rise of Nazism, the Second World War and the extermination of Jews, will play an ambiguous – at times unholy – role. Several men of the Church, priests and bishops, being fervent admirers of Hitler, even fell into complicity…

Lebanon: Extreme Poverty, Corruption and Soaring Inflation | Middle East Documentary

Jul 20, 2023 | Long considered the Switzerland of the Middle East, Lebanon is now going through the worst economic crisis in its history. 80% of the population lives below the poverty line. In one year, food prices have jumped 500% due to galloping inflation.

For Riad, who runs a grocery store in the suburbs of Beirut, business has become hellish. Every morning, calculator in hand, he changes the labels of his products according to the day’s exchange rate. An operation all the more complex as his store is plunged into darkness, due to lack of electricity.

The Lebanese government no longer provides more than two hours of electricity per day in the country. It is impossible for the population to heat, light or use their refrigerator. Taking advantage of the situation, a network of private generators has emerged.

The Lebanese pound, the local currency, has lost 90% of its value. The only ones to get away with it are those who are paid in dollars. The greenback, which is exchanged for a fortune against the local currency, has given birth to a new privileged social class in the country. A salesman in an international pharmaceutical company, Joseph lives like a king in a ruined Lebanon. Thanks to his new purchasing power, he repaid his house loan in two months, instead of… twenty years!

In a bankrupt state, plagued by corruption, six out of ten Lebanese citizens now dream of leaving the country. In Tripoli, in northern Lebanon, Mohammed and his son left by sea to reach Germany. Although their trip was cut short off the Turkish coast, the young father is still ready to take all the risks to reach the European El Dorado.

Aristotle Onassis

May 3, 2013 | Aristotle Socrates Onassis (Greek: Αριστοτέλης Ωνάσης, Aristotelis Onasis; 15 January 1906 -- 15 March 1975), commonly called Ari or Aristo Onassis, was a prominent Greek shipping magnate.

Onassis was born in Karatass, a suburb of Smyrna (now İzmir, Turkey) to Socrates and Penelope Onassis (née Dologu), who married Socrates at the age of 17. Onassis had one full-sister, Artemis, and two half-sisters, Kalliroi and Merope, by his father's second marriage following Penelope's death at the age of 33. Socrates Onassis came from the village of Moutalasski (now named Talas), near Cappadocia in Asia Minor, which is the present-day Kayseri province, in central Turkey. In 1923, Aristotle Onassis left for Buenos Aires, Argentina, by Nansen passport and got his first job with the British United River Plate Telephone Company.

He was one of the world's richest men, but it was the glamour of the women in his life, such as Maria Callas and Jackie Kennedy, which brought him real fame.

Onassis's childhood was dominated by the principles of the Orthodox Church. Unsurprisingly, this upbringing influenced him throughout his life.

While not an openly religious man, Onassis retained many of the qualities imparted to him through the church.

He left Smyrna in 1922, travelling to Argentina, where he revived the family tobacco business by building a new market for the product there. In a few years the business flourished and Onassis had made his first million.

The tobacco business was too limited for a man of Onassis' dreams and, in the early 1930s, he purchased his first ships.

It took him only a few days to expand his fleet and, by the end of the decade, he had entered the tanker business, which was potentially far more profitable.

In 1946, Onassis married Tina Livanos, the daughter of Stavros Livanos, an important Greek shipowner. Tina had American citizenship and they set up home in New York.

Later, Onassis became brother-in-law to Stavros Niarchos, another shipowner and with that, the three men, Onassis, Livanos and Niarchos, formed the most powerful shipping group in the world. Rivalry would later develop, but it remained a powerful force.

In 1957, Onassis turned his attention skywards and took over the failing Greek National Airline, making it into a private business, Olympic Airways of Greece.

Onassis divorced his wife in 1961. He had a long relationship with the singer, Maria Callas, but in 1968 married the most famous woman in the world at that time, Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy, the widow of President John F. Kennedy.

Tragedy struck in 1973, when Alexander Onassis, Onassis's son from his first marriage, died in a plane accident. Onassis was devastated. Not long after, on 15 March 1975, Onassis died. He was buried on his island near his son Alexander.

FAT: A Documentary - Health and Wellness Documentary

May 24, 2022 | FAT tells the far-fetched but completely true history of how our country became so unhealthy. What's even more alarming is that 100 million people, 1 in 3, have Diabetes or are Pre-Diabetic. This is not to mention the 40% of the population that is obese. How is this possible with the non-stop flow of new diets, exercise machines and our general obsession with health and weight loss? We're as unhealthy as ever. The truth is that we have pretty much had everything completely upside-down and backward. FAT traces a detailed history spanning 150 years to show how misinformation and outright lies have become "truth."

Directed by: Peter Curtis Pardini
Starring: Dr. Georgia Ede, Nina Teicholz, Anna Vocino, Dr. Bret Scher, Mike Dawson, Adam Carolla, Dr. Drew Pinsky, Eric Westman

Obesity and Corporate Greed | DW Documentary

May 26, 2022 | Doctors predict that by 2030, half of the world's population will be overweight or obese. An epidemic of obesity is causing a rapid rise in diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. It's becoming the biggest health challenge worldwide.

Why has no country managed to stop this epidemic? The food industry and government authorities say it's due to a lack of individual self-discipline. Is this true? Or is it the result of collective failure -- a symptom of a liberal society that abhors obesity, yet produces people who are overweight. Is society itself to blame for this situation?

Around the world, politicians, priests, doctors, and average people are standing up to multinational food corporations. They want to take back control of their nutrition and their bodies -- and they're using the law, scientific evidence, and political activism to correct the claim that people who are obese have only themselves to blame. These critics focus on sugary drinks that can be as addictive as some hard drugs; misleading advertising directed at children and low-income people; governments that turn a blind eye to junk-food companies; and lobbying that pushes the limits of legality.

These people say that a "hostile takeover" of our food has been underway for four decades, and they're demanding new legislation to put a stop to it. This documentary investigates how Chile is leading the way in this struggle. Which country will be the next to confront the big food corporations in the name of public health?
