Papst Franziskus: "Eine Art dritter Weltkrieg ist im Gang"

DIE WELT: In Bosnien spricht Papst Franziskus über Krieg und Frieden. "Es ist eine Art dritter Weltkrieg, der geführt wird", sagt er mit Blick auf aktuelle Konflikte. Und glaubt, dass diese geschürt werden.

Papst Franziskus sieht angesichts vieler bewaffneter Konflikte eine Art neuen Weltkrieg heraufziehen. Bei einem Besuch in Sarajevo, der Hauptstadt von Bosnien-Herzegowina, rief das Oberhaupt der katholischen Kirche am Samstag zugleich zur Versöhnung der Religionen auf. Sarajevo war vor 20 Jahren Schauplatz eines Krieges zwischen hauptsächlich muslimischen Bosniern, orthodoxen Serben und katholischen Kroaten.

Mit Blick auf die aktuellen Konflikte sagte der Papst: "Es ist eine Art dritter Weltkrieg, der stückweise geführt wird, und im Bereich der globalen Kommunikation nimmt man ein Klima des Krieges wahr." Einige Menschen wollten dieses Klima absichtlich schüren und suchten den Zusammenstoß verschiedener Kulturen, fügte der 78-Jährige bei einer Messe vor etwa 65.000 Menschen im Olympiastadion von Sarajevo hinzu. Architektonisch wirkt die bosnische Stadt Mostar, als könnten die Religionen hier zusammenleben. Am Ufer der Neretva stehen Moscheen und Kirchen, die im Krieg zerstörte weltberühmte Alte Brücke strahlt in neuer alter Schönheit. Doch politisch bleibt Mostar geteilt: Seit dem Bosnien-Krieg leben die Muslime im östlichen Stadtteil, die katholischen Kroaten im Westen. Nun droht in Mostar eine weitere Spaltung, diesmal in der muslimischen Religionsgemeinschaft. Die Spannungen zwischen islamistischen Fanatikern, die sich als Rechtgläubige bezeichnen, und liberalen Muslimen nehmen zu. Jüngst brach der Streit offen aus: Bei einer Massenschlägerei zwischen einer Gruppe ultrareligiöser Wahhabiten und vermutlich ehemaligen Kämpfern der bosnischen Armee wurde der 34-jährige Magdi Dizdarevic getötet.

Die islamische Gemeinschaft Bosniens bezeichnete den strenggläubigen Dizdarevic als Opfer der Vorurteile und des Hasses gegen die Muslime. Bei der Beerdigung ehrten ihn Glaubensbrüder als islamischen Märtyrer. Einige Wahhabiten sollen laut bosnischen Medien sogar mit Selbstjustiz gedroht haben. SPIEGELONLINE INTERANATIONAL: Radical Muslim imams and nationalist politicians from all camps are threatening Sarajevo's multicultural legacy. With the help of Arab benefactors, the deeply devout are acquiring new recruits. In the "Jerusalem of the Balkans," Islamists are on the rise.

The obliteration of Israel is heralded in a torrent of words. "Zionist terrorists," the imam thunders from the glass-enclosed pulpit at the end of the mosque. "Animals in human form" have transformed the Gaza Strip into a "concentration camp," and this marks "the beginning of the end" for the Jewish pseudo-state.

Over 4,000 faithful are listening to the religious service in the King Fahd Mosque, named after the late Saudi Arabian monarch King Fahd Bin Abd al-Asis Al Saud. The women sit separately, screened off in the left wing of the building. It is the day of the Khutbah, the great Friday sermon, and the city where the imam has predicted Israel's demise lies some 2,000 kilometers (1,240 miles) northwest of Gaza.

Amnesty Urges Bosnia to Protect Gay Festival
REUTERS: SARAJEVO - Amnesty International on Thursday urged authorities to safeguard Bosnia's first gay festival from possible violence from Muslims who see it as an affront to their religious feelings.

The festival, due to take place in Sarajevo next week during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, has been branded by some Islamic media and officials as a "festival of homosexuality", which is regarded as a sin and disease in Islam.

Tensions Mount in Bosnia over Gay Festival
THE MOSCOW NEWS WEEKLY: SARAJEVO, Bosnia-Herzegovina - Posters condemning homosexuals have appeared in Sarajevo ahead of this month's first-ever gay festival in Bosnia, prompting an international organization to condemn what it called "attempts to incite violence.''

Two Muslim imams have been quoted as criticizing the timing of the five-day festival, which opens Sept. 24 and will occur during the holy month of Ramadan.

Islam prohibits homosexuality, and Sarajevo is at least 85 percent Muslim.

Neither the head of the Islamic Community in Bosnia, Mustafa Ceric, nor his institution has officially reacted to the festival, which will include films and art exhibitions. But two local imams in Bosnia have condemned it.

"We will not grab them by the neck on the street, but we have to say: This is immoral ... a promotion of ideas that are in violation with religion,'' Seid Smajkic, an imam from the southern city of Mostar, was quoted as saying in Friday's Dnevni Avaz, a daily newspaper.

Another local imam, Sulejman Bulgari, said on television Thursday night that the Quran forbids homosexuality and that the holy book is clear about that.

Neither imam was available for an interview on Friday, the Muslim day of worship.
