Toronto Islamic School Removes Parts of Curriculum from Website Casting Jews as ‘Treacherous,’ Akin to Nazis

NATIONAL POST: A Toronto Islamic school said Monday it had removed part of its curriculum from its website following a complaint about the material, which depicts Jews as “treacherous” and comparable to Nazis.

“We are looking into it,” said Masuma Jessa, principal of the East End Madrassah, which operates out of David and Mary Thompson Collegiate Institute, a Toronto District School Board facility.

In a press release, the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs complained the madrassa’s curriculum was rife with antisemitic slurs. The document refers to “Jewish plots and treacheries” and calls Jews “crafty.”

“Using religion to promote hatred among youth is not just offensive and abhorrent – it shows a stunning disregard for Canada’s basic values of decency and tolerance,” David Spiro, Greater Toronto Co-Chair of centre said.

“Canadians of all backgrounds would be outraged to learn that horrific conspiracy theories are included in this curriculum, including the blood libel that Jews plotted to kill Muhammad. » | Stewart Bell | Monday, May 07, 2012

Islamic Community Planning National Interfaith Dialogue

CALGARY HERALD: The Islamic Supreme Council of Canada is planning to hold a national interfaith dialogue with Christian and Jewish leaders in Canada.

Calgary Imam Syed Soharwardy said the council wants to hold a series of interfaith dialogues in all major cities, including Montreal, Toronto, Mississauga, Halifax, Calgary, Edmonton, Saskatoon, Winnipeg, Surrey and Vancouver.

He said the purpose is to discuss: religious and secular fundamentalism and extremism in Canada; the role of religion in Canadian society; the impact of international events on faith communities and their relationships in Canada; the perceived threat of sharia law; Canadian values versus religious values; Jewish-Christian values versus Islamic values; freedom of speech and the freedom of religion in Canada and around the world; and improvements in interfaith relationships in Canada. » | Mario Toneguzzi, Calgary Herald | Friday, April 27, 2012

» | Annie Mathieu | Le Soleil | lundi 19 mars 2012

In Shafias' Hometown, Harper Talks about ‘Honour’ Crimes

THE GLOBE AND MAIL: Prime Minister Stephen Harper recalled the Shafia killings while visiting the family's hometown of Montreal to underscore Ottawa's support of a program to prevent so-called honour crimes.

Mr. Harper visited a Montreal centre for victims of family violence Friday to denounce crimes against women and girls committed in the name of “honour.”

He called honour crimes “barbaric” and “heinous” before promising nearly $350,000 to help fund a program led by The Shield of Athena Family Services to prevent these practices in the city.
“Recently, the tragedy of the Shafia girls touched Canadians profoundly,” Mr. Harper said in a speech at a community centre.

“All Canadians, regardless of the colour of their skin or which god is in their prayers, have the inalienable right to security and life.

“It's our homework to ensure that the victims of these incomprehensible murders did not suffer for nothing.” » | Andy Blatchford | Montreal | The Canadian Press | Friday, March 16, 2012

» | Agence QMI | Lundi 09 Mai 2011

Muslim Youth in Canada Targets for Radicalization: Study

TORONTO SUN: Al-Qaida-inspired domestic terrorism by young Muslims poses the largest single threat to Canadian security agencies, a sweeping new study says.

“Canada has been identified repeatedly in al-Qaida propaganda as a legitimate target because of its involvement in Afghanistan,” according to a 250-page report, The Edge of Violence by a group of researchers in the United Kingdom. “The idea of being part of an international jihadi movement can be exhilarating.”

The report, released Wednesday, took researchers Jamie Bartlett, Jonathan Birdwell and Michael King two years to complete and involved interviews with hundreds of Muslims and others in Canada and Europe.

They studied the differences between violent and non-violent Islamic radicals, including the so-called Toronto 18 terror cell, and conducted focus groups in Toronto and Montreal with 70 Muslim youth last year.

One group made up of young men between the ages of 18 and 30 “was unanimous that brainwashing was taking place.”

Young Muslims “had a distrust of government, a hatred for foreign policy and many felt a disconnection from their local community,” the report found.

There “was a high level of distrust towards policing and intelligence agencies.” >>> Tom Godfrey, Toronto Sun | Wednesday, December 08, 2010

Muslim Charged with Plotting Genocide of Canadian Jews

THE TELEGRAPH: A Muslim immigrant who called for "the slaughter of Jews" in online postings has become the first person to be charged with promoting genocide in Canada, police said on Friday.

Salman Hossain, a 25-year-old from Bangladesh who apparently left Canada in May, was charged with five counts of promoting hatred and advocating or promoting genocide over postings on his website and blog, as well as on a third-party website, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) said.

He "wilfully promoted hatred and advocated genocide of the Jewish community," said a statement.

Until now, Canada has only prosecuted suspects accused of mass atrocities abroad, in countries such as Rwanda. The Canadian government has also deported war crimes suspects to be tried in foreign courts.

Mr Hossain, who immigrated to Canada as a child, openly called for "violent regime change in Western nations in order to remove the presence of Jews" and "the slaughter of Jews," according to reports.

He also advocated terrorist attacks in Canada, cheered the killing of Canadian troops in Afghanistan, and urged fellow Muslims to overthrow the "Jewish-run Canadian government". >>> | Saturday, July 10, 2010

Canada Tells Muslim Speaker to Stay Home, Imam Says

THE STAR (TORONTO): Zakir Naik of India booked to headline Toronto conference

Muslim televangelist Zakir Naik has been told he will be turned away if he tries to enter Canada, a Toronto imam said Tuesday.

Banned from entering Britain last week, Naik is scheduled to headline the three-day Journey of Faith conference July 2-4 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.

But over the weekend, a Canadian embassy official in New Delhi phoned Naik, who lives in Mumbai, to say he will be refused entry, said conference chairman Said Ragaeh.

At the same time, nothing was put in writing, Ragaeh said.

“We have no confirmation yet. No one has told us anything,” he said. “There is no file number, no official letter, nothing.”

On a Canadian visit last year, Naik received a five-year entry visa, which is still valid, said Ragaeh, who says they will continue to promote Naik as the conference headliner until he is given official notice of the ban. >>> John Goddard, Noor Javed, Staff Reporters | Tuesday, June 22, 2010

Muslim Child Brides on Rise

TORONTO SUN: Federal immigration officials say there’s little they can do to stop “child brides” from being sponsored into Canada by much older husbands who wed them in arranged marriages abroad.

Top immigration officials in Canada and Pakistan say all they can do is reject the sponsorships of husbands trying to bring their child-brides to Canada. The men have to reapply when the bride turns 16. The marriages are permitted under Sharia Law.

Muslim men, who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents return to their homeland to wed a “child bride” in an arranged marriage in which a dowry is given to the girl’s parents. Officials said some of the brides can be 14 years old or younger and are “forced” to marry. The practice occurs in a host of countries including: Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan and Lebanon. Order to Take Off Niqab Pits Law Against Religion

THE STAR (TORONTO EDITION): Woman to appeal ruling forcing her to unveil face in sexual assault trial

A judge has ordered a Toronto woman to testify without her niqab at a sexual assault trial – raising the thorny issue of whether Muslim women should be allowed to appear as witnesses wearing a veil that covers everything but the eyes.

The issue is a collision of two rights, pitting religious freedom against the right of a defendant to face an accuser in open court.

The case could be precedent setting because it doesn't appear there is any Canadian case law addressing the question of Muslim women in the courtroom. In Canada, home to about 580,000 Muslims, the case will be closely watched, amid fears about Muslim women coming forward in criminal cases. >>> Betsy Powell | Monday, February 2, 2009
