"It's All About the Oil, Stupid!": Mehdi Hasan on Trump Attacking Venezuela & Kidnapping Maduro
I can think of many words that one could use to describe Trump. Just about all of them are uncomplimentary. But, when thinking about Trump’s bold and audacious move on Venezuela, the word which immediately springs to mind is THIEF. — © Mark Alexander

Europe’s Failure to Condemn Trump’s Illegal Aggression in Venezuela Isn’t Just Wrong – It’s Stupid
THE GUARDIAN — OPINION: The more European countries act as colonies, unable and unwilling to stand up to Trump, the more they’ll be treated as such

There is no two without a three, as we say in Italian. After their complicit silence on Israel’s war crimes in Gaza and their tacit acceptance of the US/Israel attack on Iran, Europeans now hesitate to condemn the US’s audacious military operation to bring about regime change in Venezuela. With few notable exceptions – such as Spain, the Netherlands and Norway – most European leaders have fudged their response. Spain, in fact, has acted without its EU partners, condemning the US attack alongside a group of Latin American countries. European governments seem unable to utter in the same breath that, although Nicolás Maduro was an illegitimate dictator, the US attack to topple him is a gross violation of international law.
The French president, Emmanuel Macron, the UK prime minister, Keir Starmer, and the European Commission president, Ursula von der Leyen, at least made reference to international law, while emphasising that they shed no tears for the end of Maduro’s regime. Others, such as the German chancellor, Friedrich Merz, strangely talked about looking into the legality of the US military action, as if there were any doubt about its nature. Worse still, Trump-friendly Italian prime minister Giorgia Meloni defined this act of external military intervention as “legitimate” self-defence against narco-trafficking.
These are all European leaders, who head liberal democracies and represent institutions that elevate multilateralism and international law as core principles. Why are they so ambiguous about such a gross violation? Even if we set global legal norms aside, does such ambiguity serve the European interest? » | Nathalie Tocci | Tuesday, January 6, 2026
Margaret Thatcher wasn’t right about everything, but she was right about the weakness of many Europeam politicians. She said they were a weak, feeble lot. Their timidity to condemn Trump for trampling over international law and kidnapping its president points to how right Thatcher was about European leaders’ propensity to be weak and feeble. — © Mark Alexander

Trump’s ‘Imperialist Agenda’ for Greenland Opposing NATO Ally Is ‘Very Dangerous’ | Ex-CIA Director
Jan 6, 2026 | "This is not the America and government that I worked for, for close to 35 years."
The US operation to capture Nicholás Maduro and the rhetoric towards Denmark around Greenland is the beginning of "very aggressive, dangerous, and very destabilising Trump administration policy", says former director of the CIA, John Brennan.
John Brennan stated that many Americans are asking themselves “What has happened to our country?” That’s a NO BRAINER! What has happened to their country is that Americans re-elected a CRIMINAL as their president. That’s what’s happened! Elect a criminal, expect a crime! And in the case of King Don, crimes. Very many crimes! — © Mark Alexander

'A Huge Moment in Post-war History': Lewis Goodall in Trump's Greenland Plan
Jan 5, 2026 | Lewis Goodall joins Shelagh Fogarty to discuss Donald Trump's most recent comments where he again proposed annexing Greenland. Denmark's leader has urged Trump to "stop the threats" over the island.
Speaking to reporters, the US president said "we need Greenland from the standpoint of national security". Trump has repeatedly raised the prospect of the semi-autonomous Danish territory becoming an annexed part of the US, citing its strategic location for defence purposes and mineral wealth.
Greenland's Prime Minister Jens Frederik Nielsen responded by saying "that's enough now" and described the notion of US control over the island as a "fantasy".

Trump Eyes Up Greenland: Defence Expert Warns of Consequences for NATO | LBC
Jan 6, 2026 | Former Defence Secretary Sir Ben Wallace talks to Nick Ferrari about Donald Trump's renewed threats to take over Greenland, a territory of Denmark.
After launching a military intervention in Venezuela over the weekend, President Trump has doubled down on his calls for the US to control Greenland for 'national security' purposes.
Wallace tells Nick Ferrari about the 'worrying shift' in America's worldview, one that throws out 'rules and regulations' in favour of power. The former Tory defence secretary explains how this 'shift' threatens the West as, similar to Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine, Trump is seeking to 'take over a sovereign nation'.
Wallace ends by saying that when it comes to President Trump's threats, 'he means what he says'.

Stephen Miller Asserts U.S. Has Right to Take Greenland
THE NEW YORK TIMES: In a CNN interview, the Trump aide also echoed the president’s intent to run Venezuela as he laid out a case for the United States to control weaker states by flexing its military might.
Stephen Miller, a top aide to President Trump, asserted on Monday that Greenland rightfully belonged to the United States and that the Trump administration could seize the semiautonomous Danish territory if it wanted.
“Nobody’s going to fight the United States militarily over the future of Greenland,” Mr. Miller told Jake Tapper, the CNN host, after being asked repeatedly whether he would rule out using military force.
The remarks were part of a vocal push by Mr. Miller, long a powerful behind-the-scenes player in Trump administration policy, to justify American imperialism and a vision for a new world order in which the United States could freely overthrow national governments and take foreign territory and resources so long as it was in the national interest.
“We live in a world, in the real world, Jake, that is governed by strength, that is governed by force, that is governed by power,” he said. “These are the iron laws of the world since the beginning of time.” » | Chris Cameron | Reporting from Washington | Monday, January 5, 2026
Civilization as we knew it is over! According to this Nazi's rationale, if your neighbour’s house is nicer than yours and you are stronger than he, you are entitled to move in and steal his house from him! How civilized!
This is what you get when you allow your country to be run by criminals. Trump, or King Don, is the big boss, of course. But Stephen Miller is one of his chief advisors.

US Attack on Greenland Would Mean End of Nato, Says Danish PM
THE GUARDIAN: Mette Frederiksen criticises Donald Trump’s ‘unacceptable pressure’ as Greenland counterpart condemns ‘fantasies’
An attack by the United States on a Nato ally would mean the end of both the military alliance and “post-second world war security”, Denmark’s leader has warned, after Donald Trump threatened again to take over Greenland.
Fresh from his military operation in Venezuela, the US president said on Sunday the US needed Greenland “very badly” – renewing fears of a US invasion of the largely autonomous island, which is a former Danish colony and remains part of the Danish kingdom. Greenland’s foreign and security policy continues to be controlled by Copenhagen.
Mette Frederiksen, the Danish prime minister, warned on Monday that any US attack on a Nato ally would be the end of “everything”.
“If the United States decides to militarily attack another Nato country, then everything would stop – that includes Nato and therefore post-second world war security,” Frederiksen told Danish television network TV2.
Greenland’s strategic location between Europe and North America makes it a critical site for the US ballistic missile defence system. The island’s significant mineral resources also align with Washington’s ambition to reduce dependence on Chinese exports. » | Miranda Bryant, Nordic correspondent | Tuesday, January 6, 2026
