Sep 21, 2025 | Canada, Australia and the UK have just announced they are recognising a Palestinian state. The declarations come ahead of a formal declaration at the UN General assembly in New York.

Several other Western nations, including France, have announced similar plans, as international calls grow for the implementation of a two-state solution.

Journalists Forced to Obtain Approval to Publish Stories in New Pentagon Restrictions

EURO NEWS: Media organisations and professionals have denounced the new Pentagon restrictions as unconstitutional, describing it as an attack on the first amendment, which guarantees freedom of the press.

The Pentagon says it will require journalists credentialed to sign a pledge to refrain from reporting on information that has not been authorised for release, including unclassified information.

A 17-page memo released by the US Department of War, recently renamed by the Trump administration from the Department of Defence, detailed that journalists who do not abide by the policy risk losing their credentials that provide access to the Pentagon.

“Information must be approved for public release by an appropriate authorizing official before it is released, even if it is unclassified,” the directive states.

Advocates for press freedoms denounced the non-disclosure requirement as an attack on independent journalism. Spain's New Smoking Law Plans Could Mean Big Changes for Travellers

EURO NEWS: Spain's new regulations would also cover the use of electronic cigarettes and vapes as the country moves to impose stricter controls on tobacco marketing and product distribution in a bid to boost public health.

Spain's coalition government has approved a draft bill restricting smoking in public places that could have a significant impact on travellers.

The proposed legislation will ban smoking and vaping in outdoor spaces, including sports venues, beaches, restaurant and bar terraces.

"We'll always put public health ahead of private interests," Spain’s health minister Monica Garcia told reporters. "Everyone has a right to breathe clean air and live longer and better lives."

The proposed measures have drawn opposition from restaurant and bar owners, who say Spain's year-round outdoor dining culture is boosted significantly by customers who smoke.

‘Bitcoin Is the Free Speech of Money’: Fears Grow over Far Right’s Embrace of Crypto

THE OBSERVER: Hard-to trace digital transactions could lead to hostile states or criminal organisations secretly making political donations and threatening democracy

When Elon Musk appeared on huge screens dotted along Whitehall last weekend calling for thousands of attendees at far-right campaigner Tommy Robinson’s Unite the Kingdom rally to “fight back… or die”, the tech billionaire’s image was accompanied by the logos of the event’s sponsors. All but one were cryptocurrencies.

It highlighted the arrival in Britain of a global pattern: the embrace by extreme rightwing movements of decentralised digital currencies.

Athena Bitcoin Global, one of the main sponsors of the event, which saw up to 150,000 people gather in central London, has been accused of profiting from cybercrime in the US.

This month, the attorney general for the District of Columbia (DC) accused the company, which makes bitcoin ATMs that exchange the cryptocurrency for cash and vice versa, of knowingly profiting from scams targeting elderly victims for “life-altering” sums of cash.

The Real Life of Civilians under the Nazi Regime

Aug 11, 2025 | During the Third Reich, the lives of German civilians were marked by a mix of initial enthusiasm, absolute control, and, ultimately, total destruction. From 1933 onward, Nazi propaganda transformed daily life: in schools, shops, public squares, and homes, the regime imposed a language of national pride and exclusion. Radio, cinema, and youth organizations became tools to shape minds and eliminate dissent. Gleichschaltung—the total coordination of society with Nazi ideals—turned civilian life into a choreography of obedience and constant surveillance.

With the outbreak of World War II, everyday life became militarized. Food rationing, forced labor, and the mobilization of women and teenagers transformed homes and factories into extensions of the front. Propaganda kept morale high while fear, censorship, and denunciations among neighbors reinforced social control. Recreational and cultural activities, such as tourism and sports, were absorbed into the propaganda apparatus, and leisure ceased to be free, becoming a vehicle for indoctrination.

As the war progressed, shortages, bombings, and human losses shattered the illusion of order. Cities were reduced to rubble, the black market became vital for survival, and hunger marked daily existence. Defeat in 1945 brought occupation, revenge, and the revelation of crimes committed, forcing civilians to confront a past of complicity, silence, or fear. Life under the Nazi regime was a journey from the promise of prosperity to the moral and material collapse of an entire nation.

In 1865, a handful of Southern Civil War veterans founded a secret society: the Ku Klux Klan. Very quickly, the Klan instituted a reign of terror among the recently freed black population. The Ku Klux Klan was reborn in 1915 thanks to the film The Birth of a Nation by D. W. Griffith. Under new leadership, it evolved to fit into an America undergoing major changes and broadened its trade in hatred. The KKK became anti-immigrant, anti-urban, anti-communist, anti-Semitic, and anti-Catholic. Nearly four million Americans joined what would become a highly influential mass lobbying organization. But at the end of the 1920s, scandals and the economic crisis weakened the movement, which eventually disappeared again after the Second World War.
