BBC: Around three million people in parts of Wales and south-west England have been sent an emergency alert from the government as Storm Darragh approaches the UK.
It is the largest use of the warning system yet and has been sent to the mobile phones of people in areas covered by the Met Office red weather warning for the storm.
The alert made a loud siren-like sound when it was delivered to devices, even if they were set on silent, and lasted for around 10 seconds.
The Met Office issued a rare red warning - the most serious type - earlier on Friday for wind. It is in place from 03:00 to 11:00 GMT on Saturday.
The Met Office only issues red warnings when meteorologists believe that dangerous, potentially life-threatening weather is expected imminently. » | Imogen James & Anna Lamche, BBC News, Chris Fawkes, Lead Weather Presenter | Friday, December 6, 2024

Seven Dead after Storms Lash France, Switzerland and Italy
THE GUARDIAN: Three people died when tree crushed car they were travelling in, while torrential rains triggered landslides
Ferocious storms and torrential rains that lashed France, Switzerland and Italy this weekend have left seven people dead, local authorities said.
Three people in their 70s and 80s died in France’s north-eastern Aube region on Saturday when a tree crushed the car in which they were travelling during fierce winds, the local authority told Agence France-Presse. A fourth passenger was in critical care, it added.
In neighbouring Switzerland, four people have died and another is missing, according to local police. Three were killed after torrential rains triggered a landslide in the south-east, police in the Italian-speaking canton of Ticino said. » | Agence France-Presse | Sunday, June 30, 2024

There is severe flooding in parts of Northern Ireland, while people in Yorkshire and Manchester have been forced to leave their homes for safety.

Storm Eunice Looms as Storm Dudley Clear-up Continues
BBC: Travel disruption and power cuts are continuing across parts of the UK, as the country braces itself for a second storm.
Storm Dudley left thousands of people in north-east England, Cumbria, North Yorkshire and Lancashire without power.
In Scotland, all trains were cancelled on Wednesday evening but most lines were back up and running by 10:00 GMT.
More severe weather is expected on Friday, with an amber warning for wind in place for Wales and much of England.
The Met Office is warning of significant disruption and danger to life from Storm Eunice, with gusts of up to 80mph.
Around the coasts of west Wales and south-west England, gusts of up to 100mph are possible, the Met Office said. Such strong winds are very unusual for these parts of the UK.
The amber warning is in place from 03:00 GMT until 21:00 on Friday and goes as far north as Manchester.
With the possibility of such high wind speeds, BBC Weather presenter Simon King said the warning could be upgraded to red - the highest level - if the Met Office's confidence that these speeds will be reached increases. » | Becky Morton, BBC News | Thursday, February 17, 2022

105mph Wind Recorded as Gales Batter Britain
THE GUARDIAN: Wales hit by record wind speed as Thames is set to rise to highest level in 60 years
Strong winds continued to batter the UK on Wednesday, causing disruption to road and rail networks and leaving 21,000 people without power.
A top wind speed of 105mph was recorded in Aberdaron in north-west Wales, and Western Power Distribution said electricity supplies had been hit in south Wales, the south-west and the west Midlands. Gusts of 92mph have already been recorded in the Mumbles on the Gower Peninsula, south-west Wales, the weather forecaster Meteogroup said.
Clifton suspension bridge in Bristol was briefly closed for the first time in its history, and the storms have also brought a number of trees down. Coastal areas could also be battered by large waves, the Met Office said.
The Environment Agency warned that the Thames was set to rise in places to its highest levels in more than 60 years, causing severe disruption to communities in Windsor, Maidenhead and Surrey. » | Haroon Siddique, Matthew Weaver and agencies | Wednesday, February 12, 2014

Typhoon Haiyan: Philippines Destruction 'Absolute Bedlam'
BBC: The head of the Red Cross in the Philippines has described the devastation caused by Typhoon Haiyan as "absolute bedlam".
Officials estimate up to 10,000 people have died in Tacloban city and elsewhere. Hundreds of thousands of people are displaced.
Rescue efforts are being hindered by damage to roads and airports.
The storm has now made landfall in north Vietnam, near the Chinese border, but has weakened to a tropical storm.
One of the most powerful storms on record to make landfall, Haiyan - named "Yolanda" by Filipino authorities - barrelled into the eastern coastal provinces of Leyte and Samar on Friday.
It then headed west, sweeping through six central Philippine islands. (+ BBC video) » | Monday, November 11, 2013
