Libya: US Fighter Jet Crash Lands in Field Near Benghazi

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: A US warplane has crash landed in a Libyan field in the area around Benghazi, The Daily Telegraph can disclose.

The pilot of the F-15E fighter jet was rescued by rebel soldiers after ejecting from the aircraft, it is understood. Another crew member is also thought to have ejected.

The crashed plane was discovered by a Telegraph journalist reporting in and around Benghazi, the rebel-held city.

It is thought the F-15E fighter jet came to ground after suffering a mechanical failure.

The US military confirmed that one of its jets had crash landed. Vince Crawley, a spokesman for the U.S. military's Africa Command, said that one crewman had been recovered and one was "in process of recovery".

Crawley said the crash occurred "overnight." He declined to give the location of the crash and also would not say how the rescued crewman was picked up.

This is the first coalition aircraft to have crash landed during the Libyan conflict following the third night of air strikes. » | Rob Crilly, and Laura Roberts | Tuesday, March 22, 2011

Britons Feared Dead in Tripoli Plane Crash

TIMES ONLINE: More than 100 people were killed when a plane crashed on landing at Tripoli airport in Libya this morning. Seven on board were bound for London and only an 8-year-old Dutch boy survived.

The Afriqiyah Airways Airbus A330-200 was carrying 93 passengers, reportedly including Britons and South Africans, as well as 11 Libyan crew. The flight left Johannesburg on Tuesday night and crashed at 6am local time. “It exploded on landing and totally disintegrated,” a security official said.

A Foreign & Commonwealth Office spokesman told The Times that a team from the embassy had gone to Tripoli airport to investigate unconfirmed reports of Britons killed in the crash. "Consular staff in Tripoli are urgently seeking further details," he said.

All passengers and crew were killed apart from the boy. The child was said to be "in a good condition" in a local hospital but was undergoing surgery for injuries including broken bones. >>> Tristan McConnell and Joanna Sugden | Wednesday, May 12, 2010

REUTERS: Up to 168 Aboard Plane Killed in Iran Crash

TEHRAN - A Tupolev passenger aircraft crashed in northwestern Iran on Wednesday and 168 people on board were killed, Iranian media reported.

The Caspian Airlines aircraft was carrying 153 passengers and 15 crew, Reza Jafarzadeh, a spokesman for Iran's aviation organization, told state television.

State television showed footage of debris from the plane and some body parts.

"It's been a major disaster with pieces of aircraft spread over an area of 200 square meters," a fire brigade official told Iranian state television.

"There was an explosion which left an indentation 10 meters deep in the ground. There was nothing we could do. We tried to put out the fire as best we could," he said.

Other television pictures showed a large crater gouged into farmland with mangled pieces of metal scattered around. Smoke rose from the site as police and bystanders gathered around.

The plane was traveling from Tehran to Yerevan in Armenia when it came down at 11:33 a.m. (0703 GMT) near the city of Qazvin, the official IRNA news agency said.

The plane crashed 16 minutes after take-off from the capital's Imam Khomeini International airport, it said. >>> Reporting by Zahra Hosseinian and Parisa Hafezi; Writing by Fredrik Dahl; Editing by Louise Ireland, © Thomson Reuters 2009 All rights reserved | Wednesday, July 15, 2009

Our Thoughts and Prayers for Beverly Eckert, 9/11 Widow

Her husband died in the September 11 attack on the World Trade Centre after phoning to say that he loved her. As she flew to commemorate his 58th birthday and to establish a scholarship in his name at the high school where they met, Beverly Eckert also met her death in a fiery plane crash.

Ms Eckert was among 50 people who died when a Continental Connection commuter plane nosedived into a house in New York State, killing everyone on board and one person on the ground.

Last week Ms Eckert had met President Obama at the White House when he briefed the families of terrorism victims on the new Administration’s approach to terror suspects. 9/11 Widow Beverly Eckert among 50 Dead as Plane Lands on House >>> James Bone in New York | Saturday, February 14, 2009
