Islamic Scholar Condemns Gay Marriage in Nigeria

NIGERIAN TRIBUNE: AN Islamic scholar, (Alhaji) Abideen Olaiya, has condemned the proposed gay marriage in the country, saying that it is Unislamic [sic], satanic, evil and ungodly act which shows the end time of the earth.

Olaiya who was a guest lecturer at the Walimot Nikah between Sister Nafisat Opeyemi Abdul-Rasaq and Barrister Qasim Hussain Odedeji, the Amir, Muslim Students Society of Nigeria (MSSN), Osogbo branch, Osun State, made this known while delivering his lecture entitled "Challenges of Marriage In our society [sic].”

He maintained that it was the right of men and women to marry each other Islamically on this planet, stressing that it was legal and right in Islam for a man with necessary powers to marry more than one wife.

According to him, only men endowed by Allah with sexual, intelligent and financial power were allowed by Islam to marry more than one wife, urging the Muslim men with the enumerated powers to marry more than one wife. » | Friday, April 13, 2012

'Pull Her by the Ear, Beat Her by Hand or Stick': How the Islamic Guide to a Happy Marriage Advises Husbands to Treat Their Wives

MAIL ONLINE: An Islamic 'marriage guide' book has sparked outrage - by advising men on the best ways to beat their wives.

A Gift For Muslim Couple tells husbands that they should beat their wives with 'hand or stick or pull her by the ears'.

But the book has faced a backlash from moderate Muslims who claim that it encourages domestic violence.

The 160-page book claims to be a 'presentation for newlyweds' or couples who have been together for some years. It is written by Maulavi Ashraf Ali Thanvi, who is understood to be a prominent Islamic scholar.

According to the book's blurb: 'The book... deals with the subject of marriage and after marriage relationship, as well as the various pitfalls of marriage, causes of breakdown and their causes.'

It also claims to give 'real life incidents' and advises on 'different aspects of family life and how to run the institution of marriage successfully'.

But within the book's opening pages it states that 'it might be necessary to restrain her with strength or even to threaten her.'

It continues: 'The husband should treat the wife with kindness and love, even if she tends to be stupid and slow sometimes.'

The author then gives the 'rights of the husband'. According to the book, these include his wife’s inability to leave 'his house without his permission'.

She must then 'fulfill his desires' and 'not allow herself to be untidy ... but should beautify herself for him'.

Worryingly, the book advises men that they should scold their wives. According to the book, they may also 'beat by hand or stick, withhold money from her or pull (her) by the ears.'

It the adds that men should 'refrain from beating her excessively.' Read on and comment »| Rick Dewsbury | Saturday, March 24, 2012

Dubai’s Grand Mufti Calls for Curb in Marriage to Foreigners

THE TELEGRAPH: The Grand Mufti of Dubai is calling for a curb in marriages between locals and foreigners as the price of marrying native brides has soared to more than £300,000.

The number of Emiratis marrying foreigners has risen by 10 per cent in the last four years, according to recent figures.

Officials and religious leaders blame the rising costs of dowries and extravagant wedding ceremonies and parties for encouraging “ordinary” local men to seek foreign wives, who cost less to marry.

Dr Ahmad al-Haddad, Dubai's Grand Mufti, the country's most senior Islamic scholar, wants to restrict foreign marriages to allow only Muslim, Arab spouses, and a maximum age difference of 25 years. For men, it would have to be his first and only wife.

“In Islam, choosing your life partner is a personal freedom,” the Grand Mufti said at a gathering in honour of the holy month of Ramadan. “But personal freedoms can be restricted for the benefit of the public interest.”

His proposals are unlikely to be welcomed, while he may have difficulty persuading Dubai’s ruler to approve his suggestion. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum took a Jordanian princess as his second wife, and would have fallen foul of the new rules. >>>Richard Spencer, Dubai | Tuesday, August 24, 2010

French Judge Annuls Muslim Marriage over Bride’s False Virginity Claim

TIMESONLINE: The annulment of a young Muslim couple’s marriage because the bride was not a virgin has caused anger in France, prompting President Sarkozy’s party to call for a change in the law.

The decision by a court in Lille was condemned by the Government, media, feminists and civil rights organisations after it was reported in a legal journal on Thursday. Patrick Devedjian, leader of the ruling Union for a Popular Movement, said it was unacceptable that the law could be used for religious reasons to repudiate a bride. It must be modified “to put an end to this extremely disturbing situation”, he said.

The case, which had previously gone unreported, involved an engineer in his 30s, named as Mr X, who married Ms Y, a student nurse in her 20s, in 2006. The wedding night party was still under way at the family’s home in Roubaix when the groom came down from the bedroom complaining that his bride was not a virgin. He could not display the blood-stained sheet that is traditionally exhibited as proof of the bride’s “purity”.

Mr X went to court the following morning and was granted a annulment on the grounds that his bride had deceived him on “one of the essential elements” of the marriage. In disgrace with both families, she acknowledged that she had led her groom to believe that she was a virgin when she had already had sexual intercourse. She did not oppose the annulment.

Critics ran out of superlatives to condemn what they depicted as a dangerous aberration. Valérie Létard, Minister for Women’s Rights, said that she was “shocked to see that today in France the civil law can be used to diminish the status of women”.
