US Law to Arm Syrian Rebels a Hostile Decision, Directly Threatens Russians in Syria

The latest National Defense Authorization Act signed into law by President Barack Obama is a "threat" to Russians in Syria, Moscow says, as the bill "openly stipulates the possibility" of delivering more weapons which might "soon" end in the hands of terrorists.

Washington's decision to supply weapons, including portable air defense missile systems, to militants in Syria "directly threatens the aircraft of the Russian Aerospace Forces, other Russian military personnel and the Russian Embassy in Syria, which has been shelled more than once," Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said in a statement on Tuesday.

Rand Paul: Obama's Plan to Arm Syrian Rebels Means Siding with Terrorists

Ending the violence, protecting civilians and defending human rights - these are the key issues the Syrian National Coalition plans to discuss during its unofficial forum with the UN Security Council in New York on Friday. But amid all the declared noble causes, the opposition group, which has no official status, reportedly hopes to open up weapon supplies, during a meeting with the US Secretary of State. Senator Rand Paul condemned the idea of arming the rebels, saying this would mean siding with terrorists.

Cameron Admits Weapons Could Be in Bad Guys' Hands in Syria

Britain's Prime Minister seems to be having a change of heart regarding weapons supplies to the Syrian opposition. In a BBC interview, David Cameron says he's still committed to helping rebel groups fighting government forces, but that these groups include, in his words, 'a lot of bad guys.' Deepak Tripathi, a political analyst and historian from University of Roehampton in London, talks to RT.

Delivery Error? US Weapons Show Up in Hands of Pro-Assad Fighters

US and European arms, intended for Syrian rebels - are ending up in the hands of pro-government forces. Pictures have flooded the internet, showing Shiite militias, fighting alongside President Assad's troops - using Western weaponry. And that's fuelled concerns that Washington is unable to control where its weapons are ending up, as RT's Gayane Chichakyan reports.

David Cameron Warned Arming Syrian Rebels Could Embroil Britain in All-out War

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: David Cameron abandoned plans to arm the Syrian rebels after being warned by military chiefs that it could embroil British forces in an all-out war.

Senior military figures have warned the Prime Minister that with the momentum on the side of President Assad's regime, sending small arms and missiles is unlikely to make a difference.

There are also growing concerns that arms sent to Syria could end up in the hands of extremists rather than moderate rebels, potentially presenting a long-term threat to British security.

More significant military intervention, such as introducing a no-fly zone over Syria, could mire Britain in a conflict for months because of the strength of the regime's air defences.

The move represents a significant climb-down by Mr Cameron. He and his Foreign Secretary, William Hague, have been keen to act. In May he demanded an end to the EU arms embargo to give him more options.

His wife, Samantha, was reportedly pushing for him to take a more robust response after being moved by the scale of the humanitarian crisis in Syria. » | Steven Swinford, Senior Political Correspondent | Monday, July 15, 2013

Tony Blair Demands Western Intervention to Overthrow Assad

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: Tony Blair has warned of "catastrophic consequences" if the West fails to arm Syrian rebels to defeat the regime of President Bashar al-Assad.

The consequences of refusing to intervene are likely to be more costly for the West than participating in the drive to oust the regime.

Speaking in Israel, the former prime minister acknowledged the "predominant emotion" in the West was to stay out of Syria, where rebels are battling to oust Bashar Assad and his regime, and avoid becoming embroiled in the politics of the region. "Undoubtedly the predominant emotion in the West today is to stay out of Syria; indeed to stay out of the region's politics," he said. "But as every day that passes shows, the cost of staying out may be paid in a higher price later."

The comments came a day after G8 leaders papered over differences between the West and Russia to agree that a political solution to the conflict must be an international priority. » | Damien McElroy and agencies | Wednesday, June 19, 2013

Exclusive: Arab States Arm Rebels as UN Talks of Syrian Civil War

THE INDEPENDENT: Saudi Arabia and Qatar 'supplying weapons' to anti-Assad forces, while fears mount for civilians

Syrian rebels are being armed by Saudi Arabia and Qatar, The Independent has learnt, in a development that threatens to inflame a regional power struggle provoked by the 15-month-old uprising against the Assad regime.

Rebel fighters from the Free Syrian Army (FSA) have received weapons from the two Gulf countries, which were transported into Syria via Turkey with the implicit support of the country's intelligence agency, MIT, according to a Western diplomat in Ankara. Opposition fighters in Syria have hitherto been handicapped by a reliance on an old and inadequate arsenal, while the regime in Damascus has been able to rely on a supply of arms from Russia and Iran. Moscow is arming Syria with attack helicopters, Hillary Clinton, the US Secretary of State, claimed yesterday. "We are concerned by the latest information we have that there are attack helicopters on the way from Russia to Syria, which will escalate the conflict quite dramatically," she told a conference in Washington. » | Justin Vela | ISTANBUL | Wednesday, June 13, 2012
