NSW Becomes Second State to Ban Nazi Flag and Symbols

THE GUARDIAN: Intentionally bearing swastikas can now land a person in jail for up to a year and a fine of over $100,000

Intentionally waving a Nazi flag in New South Wales or displaying memorabilia bearing swastikas could now land a person in jail for up to a year, along with a fine of over $100,000.

The Crimes Amendment (prohibition on display of Nazi symbols) Bill 2022 swiftly and unanimously passed the NSW upper house on Thursday.

The legislation was drafted in April, after an inquiry recommended a ban on the public display of Nazi symbols in a bid to tackle rising antisemitism.

NSW becomes the second state in Australia to pass the landmark legislation after Victoria in June.

NSW Jewish Board of Deputies CEO Darren Bark described the passing of the law as a historic day for NSW. » | Australian Associated Press | Thursday, August 11, 2022

Birmingham: 'Islam Must Die' and Swastika Graffiti Daubed on University as City Mosque Attacked

INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS TIMES: Police have suggested that separate Islamophobic attacks at the University of Birmingham and a nearby mosque are linked, after the words "Islam must die" and a swastika were daubed on a wall at the student campus.

Islamophobic graffiti was sprayed on walls at the university, in Edgbaston, and the Jahalabad mosque on Dartmouth Road, Selly Oak, on Friday evening (16-17 January).

The offensive language and symbol have since been scrubbed from the wall of the old university gym, but students remain shocked at the incident. » | Lewis Dean | Monday, January 19, 2015

Marine Le Pen Threatens to Sue Madonna

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: Marine Le Pen, the leader of the French far-Right, has threatened to sue Madonna over a video depicting the National Front chief with a swastika on her forehead.

The fleeting image was shown at a concert the US-born singer gave in Tel Aviv last Thursday as part of her MDNA world tour.

Projected during the song Nobody knows me, the film morphed Madonna's face with a number of famous figures, including Chinese leader Hu Jinatao, US Republican former presidential candidate Sarah Palin and Pope Benedict XVI.

Miss Le Pen's eyes and forehead then appear for a second before a swastika and the eyes of Adolf Hitler are superimposed onto the FN leader.

Furious, Miss Le Pen threatened to sue the singer if she kept the video unchanged when she performs in Paris on the July 14 national holiday and in Nice in August. "If she does that in France, we'll be waiting for her," she told Le Parisien. » | Henry Samuel, Paris | Monday, June 04, 2012

Poster Displaying Nazi Swastika in Warsaw Deemed Legal

BALTIMORENEWS.NET: In Warsaw, the capital of Poland, a large billboard featuring a naked model clad only in a Mickey Mouse mask with a Nazi swastika behind her, has roused the anger of members of the public.

An Italian artist, Max Papeschi, created the piece which is called “NaziSexyMouse” and adorns the side of an entire building in order to advertise a newly opened art gallery.

A city councilor, Norbert Napieraj, is attempting to take legal action against the poster, referring to Poland’s laws banning the display of the swastika; the 2-storey high picture has also been torn by vandals, but was recently replaced. >>> Baltimore News.Net | Saturday, July 10, 2010

Death Threats for French Imam Who Preaches Peace with Jewish Neighbours

THE TELEGRAPH: Preacher under police protection after Gaza conflict raises tensions in poor Paris suburb

Hassen Chalghoumi has devoted his life to bringing people together. For years he has preached the values of inter-faith harmony from his mosque in Paris's poor and fractious north-eastern suburbs, working with Jewish leaders, inviting them to his home and urging young people of all religions to embrace harmony in place of hatred.

But today the imam, whose work has been hailed by religious and political leaders, was in fear of his life and under police protection in Drancy after the tensions lying dormant in his community were reawoken by the conflict over 2,000 miles away in Gaza.

Enraged by his determination to show solidarity with the Jewish community at a time when they feel the battle lines are clear, unknown French Muslims have left death threats on his mobile phone. Some have stopped him in the street to warn him he is going "too far". His car has been vandalised and drenched in fuel.

"It is very hard to work for rapprochement in such a climate," he said. "But it has to be done."

In a fortnight which has seen the Palestinian death toll from Israel's assault exceed 1,000, the European country with the largest Muslim and Jewish populations has been served an uncomfortable reminder of the tensions that continue to divide it.

Synagogues in several towns across France have been daubed with antisemitic graffiti. One in Lille was decorated with a swastika. Others have been attacked with petrol bombs and set alight. Dozens of people have been arrested after pro-Palestinian protests turned violent and Israeli flags were burned in the street. According to the French Jewish students' union, there have been 55 antisemitic incidents since 27 December. The police have not published an official list. >>> Lizzy Davies, Paris | Friday, January 16, 2010

Police Hunt Neo-Nazis Who Cut Swastika Into Woman's Hip

SPIEGELONLINE INTERNATIONAL: Yet another far-right assault in eastern Germany: Police are hunting four men who sliced a swastika into the hip of a 17-year-old woman after she tried to stop them harassing a six-year-old girl. Witnesses have been slow to come forward.

German police say they have received two leads but have made no arrests yet in the case of a 17-year-old girl attacked by four far-right youths who cut a swastika symbol into her hip in the eastern town of Mittweida this month.

The men had been outside a supermarket pushing and harassing a six-year-old girl from the former Soviet Union. The teenager shouted at them to stop and they responded by turning on her. They threw her to the ground, three of them held her and the fourth cut the 5 centimeter Nazi symbol into her thigh with what she said was an "object similar to a scalpel."

He also tried to cut a Germanic symbol into her cheek but she defended herself so violently that they failed, police said. Police have located a 19-year-old suspect but so far none of the people who witnessed the attack have come forward to testify and the local court has refused to issue an arrest warrant against him because of a lack of evidence. >>
