Liberation of Paris after Four Years of Nazi Occupation (June to August 1944)

May 26, 2023 | This is an excerpt from the film "The Spirit of Liberation": click here. Between the 19th and 25th August 1944 during the Second World War and in the course of Operation Overlord, the liberation of Paris took place. The capital of France had been occupied by German troops since June 1940. In mid-August 1944, a general strike set in motion the events of the eventual liberation, and an open revolt by French resistance fighters followed from 19th August. Allied formations advanced towards Paris in support, and soon the German city commander Dietrich von Choltitz capitulated in defiance of explicit orders from Adolf Hitler.

The Guardian View on Macron’s Pension Reform: Legal but Harmful

THE GUARDIAN – EDITORIAL: France’s constitutional court has approved the president’s plans to raise the retirement age. That will not stop the protests

As France’s constitutional council debated the legality of Emmanuel Macron’s unpopular pension reform last week, massed ranks of riot police stood by in central Paris. It was an unsettling sign of the times. Mr Macron’s reckless decision to use executive powers to raise the retirement age from 62 to 64 – avoiding a parliamentary vote he thought he might lose – has turned a highly charged national debate into a wider crisis of democratic legitimacy. On Friday, the nine members of the great and the good who make up the council found themselves at the eye of the storm.

Following the court’s verdict that the reform is constitutionally sound, Mr Macron will hope to draw a line and move on. On Friday evening, his embattled prime minister, Élisabeth Borne, optimistically tweeted: “The law has reached the end of its democratic process.” That may technically be true, but the political reality is very different. » | Editorial | Sunday, April 16, 2023

THE GUARDIAN: Man aged 69 arrested after reportedly opening fire on a group of people at a Kurdish cultural centre

Two people died and four have been wounded, including two in a critical condition, after a shooting in central Paris, French media reported.

Le Parisien newspaper said a 69-year-old man opened fire on a group of people at the Ahmet-Kaya Kurdish cultural centre on rue d’Enghien in the French capital’s 10th arrondissement on Friday morning.

Shots were also fired at a hairdresser’s and a restaurant in the street, the arrondissement’s mayor, Alexandra Cordebard, told BFM TV, adding that the suspect himself had been wounded.

Paris prosecutors told the public broadcaster France Télévisions that police had arrested the alleged gunman and seized his weapon soon after the shooting. The suspect, a French national, was a retired train conductor, according to reports. » | Jon Henley | Friday, December 23, 2022

1940-1944: When Paris Was German

Aug 23, 2022 | June 14, 1940, Wehrmacht troops enter Paris. This is the beginning of the occupation of the French capital, then relegated to the rank of an open city. The enemy will rule there for more than four years, until August 1944. Many things have been said and written about the daily life of the French during this very special period, made up of shortages, repressive measures and raids. London Loses Position as Most Valuable European Stock Market

BBC: Britain's stock market has lost its position as Europe's most-valued, with France taking the top spot, data shows.

A weak pound, fears of recession in the UK and surging sales at French luxury goods makers are thought to be behind the shift, according to data from Bloomberg.

It's the first time Paris has overtaken London since records began in 2003.

It comes as the UK is expected to fall into recession this year, although the French economy is also under pressure.

The combined value of British shares is now around $2.821 trillion (£2.3 trillion), while France's are worth around $2.823 trillion, Bloomberg calculates.

It marks a huge reversal of fortunes for the London Stock Exchange, which was worth about $1.4 trillion more than its Parisian rival back in 2016.

France has been catching up for some time but shares in the UK's medium sized companies have been doing particularly badly this year, as consumers cut back their spending and businesses struggle with higher costs.

London's FTSE 250 share index - which is made up of medium sized companies focused on the UK - has slumped by almost 17% in the last 12 months. » | Faarea Masud, Business reporter | Monday, November 14, 2022

This must be another Brexit benefit, Nige! – Mark

‘She Loved France and We Loved Her Back’: Tears, Tributes at Paris Market Named after Queen

FRANCE 24: While Britain’s longest reigning monarch “held a special place in the hearts of French people”, as President Emmanuel Macron put it, one place in the French capital was especially important to the Queen. FRANCE 24 spoke to shopkeepers and grieving visitors at a flower market in central Paris that was recently renamed in honour of Queen Elizabeth II.

The late Queen, who died on Thursday aged 96, visited France more than any other foreign country , meeting all 10 French presidents who took turns at the Élysée Palace during her 70 years on the throne.

“Elizabeth II mastered our language, loved our culture and touched our hearts,” Macron said in English in a video message on Friday. “We are grateful for her deep affection for France.”

The Queen made the last of her five state visits to France in 2014, to mark the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings. Stopping in Paris at the end of the trip, she unveiled a plaque at a flower market that was renamed in her honour. » | Benjamin Bodman | Friday, September 9, 2022

Bin Salman in Paris: 'Impossible to Host MBS and Have Human Rights on Agenda' • FRANCE 24 English

Jul 29, 2022 French President Emmanuel Macron hosts Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS) on Thursday, part of increased Western efforts to court the major oil-producing state amid the war in Ukraine and faltering talks to revive a nuclear deal with Iran.

French opposition figures and human rights groups have criticised Macron's decision to invite to dinner at the Elysee a man that Western leaders believe ordered the murder in 2018 of prominent Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

'It's impossible to host MBS and have human rights on agenda', ALQST's Lina Al-Hathloul said. #MBS #Al-Hathloul #SaudiArabia

Juli 2022
