Former Australian PM Malcolm Turnbull Says Rupert Murdoch’s ‘Anger-tainment’ Damaged the Democratic World
GUARDIAN – INTERNATIONAL: Longstanding Murdoch critic says mogul leaves ‘hell of a legacy’, as minister suggests he will still play ‘very big role’
Former Australian prime minister Malcolm Turnbull says Rupert Murdoch has left a ‘hell of a legacy’ after the media mogul announced he was stepping down as chair of News Corp. Composite: AAP/AP
Rupert Murdoch has been accused of doing “enormous damage to the democratic world” by a former Australian prime minister, as senior political figures in his country of birth greet news of the mogul stepping down as chair of his media empire with scepticism.
Malcolm Turnbull, a former Liberal prime minister and advocate for a royal commission into the Murdoch media empire, said the media mogul had created an “anger-tainment ecosystem” that had left the US “angrier and more divided than it’s been at any time since the civil war”.
The treasurer, Jim Chalmers, described Murdoch as a “controversial but influential” figure, while other senior political figures have noted that his decision to step down as chair of Fox and News Corp – but serve as “chairman emeritus” – will still allow him a “big role” in his media empire. » | Paul Karp, Chief political correspondent | Friday, September 22, 2022

Plan to Make It More Difficult for Australians to Criticise Islam and Other Religious Groups If Turnbull Waters Down Race Speech Laws
Victoria is threatening to make it harder to criticise Islam if the Turnbull government waters down race speech laws.
Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has flagged his intention to scrap the words ‘offend’, ‘insult’ and 'humiliate' from section 18C of the Racial Discrimination Act and replace them with the term 'harass'.
In Victoria, it’s already an offence to publish material on the internet or on fliers that might encourage other people to 'hate' or 'ridicule' a particular religious group. Read on and comment » | Stephen Johnson for Daily Mail Australia | Tuesday, March 21, 2017

Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott Ousted by Staunch Republican Malco[l]m Turnbull
THE TELEGRAPH: Millionaire lawyer Malcolm Turnbull defeats controversial Liberal Party leader Tony Abbott in a matter of hours just two years into his term
Australian prime minister Tony Abbott has been ousted in a stunning coup by self-made millionaire Malcom Turnbull continuing the nation’s five-year run of leadership swaps.
Winning a 54 to 44 Liberal party-room vote in Canberra on Monday, Mr Turnbull, 60, promised to unite the party and the nation with a new style of leadership that “respects the people’s intelligence”. The deputy Liberal leader, Julie Bishop, backed Mr Turnbull and easily won back her position in a 70 to 30 vote against cabinet minister Kevin Andrews.
The former Rhodes Scholar and investment banker holds more progressive political views than Mr Abbott, an ardent conservative and monarchist, but immediately signalled he will restrain his own personal support for same[-]sex marriage and strong action on climate change.
“This will be a thoroughly Liberal government committed to freedom, the individual and the market,” he said. » | Jonathan Pearlman, Sydney | Monday, September 14, 2015
