Nobody in Europe Knows or Cares What Kemi Badenoch Thinks. That’s a Big Mistake

Sitting in Brussels, or one of the EU’s 27 chancelleries, one could be forgiven for tuning out the latest psychodramas in Britain’s Conservative party. After all, the country has a new Labour prime minister who is a pro-European keen to build upon the “reset” begun by Keir Starmer. Who cares what a party in opposition thinks about anything when it is still reeling from its landslide 2024 defeat, and languishing third in the opinion polls as it haemorrhages support from its right flank? It is easy to dismiss Kemi Badenoch and her party as a sideshow.
That would be a mistake. Following her latest pronouncements, Badenoch has effectively committed the Conservatives to a policy of conflict, and possibly even rupture, with the EU. She recently suggested in a newspaper article that anyone who opposes her policy of withdrawing from the European convention on human rights (ECHR) or ditching net zero commitments would be considered “not serious”, and thus excluded from consideration as a Conservative candidate at the next election. She then withdrew the party whip (a UK parliamentary euphemism for “kicked out”) from Gavin Barwell, a member of the House of Lords who criticised Badenoch’s stance. Such a choice revives memories of Boris Johnson’s purge of pro-Europeans from the party.
Westminster has mostly viewed this through a domestic lens: a Tory leader prepared to jettison centre-right supporters in the hope of preventing further rightwing defections to Reform UK. What has been missing is the European dimension. Kemi Badenoch is yet another very dangerous politician. The Conservatives were mad to make her their leader. Her ideas are unappealing and anti-EU, and she does not have mass appeal. She is no Margaret Thatcher! If I am not greatly mistaken, Kemi Badenoch will end up as yet another failed Conservative leader in a long, recent list of them. And as for her wish to withdraw the UK from the ECHR — well that stinks! By the way, I write as a one-time dyed-in-the-wool Conservative voter. — © Mark Alexander

Tories to Pledge to Create Immigration Taskforce Modelled on Trump’s Ice
THE GUARDIAN: Proposed ‘removals force’ will be tasked with deporting 150,000 people a year in bid to tackle illegal immigration
The Conservatives will pledge to create a new immigration taskforce modelled on Donald Trump’s controversial Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Ice) agency, the Guardian understands.
The party’s leader, Kemi Badenoch, is expected to announce the policy on Sunday as the Conservatives heads into their annual conference after a year of historic low poll ratings. The proposed “removals force” will be tasked with deporting 150,000 people a year in a move to tackle illegal immigration.
Badenoch will say that the taskforce would be given £1.6bn and “sweeping new powers” if the Conservatives win the next election. This would include the ability to use facial recognition technology without warning to help identify those eligible for removal from the UK.
Under the plans, the taskforce would be expected to “work closely” with the police. Officers would be required to conduct immigration checks on everyone they stop or arrest, Badenoch is expected to add.
Badenoch will say that the Ice model has proved to be a “successful approach” in removing migrants who have illegally entered the US. Ice removed nearly 200,000 people in the first seven months of Trump’s second presidency, US media reported. My regular visitors will surely remember that I stated years ago that the Conservatives were going the way of the dodo. Or, put another way, the Tories would suffer the fate of the Whigs before them. My words have come true. The Conservative Party is a spent force.
Moreover, if the party continues to select duds as leaders, their fate will remain so: the party will have zero chance of having any life breathed back into it. Kemi Badenoch is another such dud. This woman has no chance of leading the party back to vistory. Every policy idea this woman has come up with is stale and, quite frankly, ridiculous. Her three main policies are as follows: that this country should leave the ECHR; that the country needs more Thatcherism; and now, that her government would emulate the tactics of Trump’s Gestapo, known in the States as ICE.
This woman is WRONG on ALL THREE POLICIES! Further, her STALE THINKING would RUIN this country and its international reputation.
Brexit has dug this country into a hole. And the first rule of what to do when you find yourself in a HOLE is to STOP DIGGING! This woman just wants to keep on digging!
The ECHR—the European Convention on Human Rights—has got nothing to do with the European Union. Though I wouldn’t mind betting that Badenoch thinks it does, simply because its title has the word ‘European’ in it! It would be ludicrous for the country to exit the ECHR. It is this which guarantees OUR rights as British subjects of the King! To think that trusting any British government to write a document guaranteeing our rights if we left would be like trusting a pet snake not to bite you!
More Thatcherism is the last thing this country needs! We already have enough wealth inequality from the last dose we had of Thatcherism. And in any case, Thatcher herself sold off all the family silver. As a result, the nation is on its uppers; so there is no more family silver left to sell off!
And as for her latest suggestion of emulating Trump’s Gestapo, well… Whoever would have thought that any Briton could be so atupid or so cruel? Furthermore, does this European nation ALWAYS have to follow what American presidents do, even when their policies are the height of cruelty and even when the president himself is suffering from galloping dementia?
If Conservatives know what is good for them—and please remember that I write as a one-time, lifelong, ardent Conservative—they will ditch this leader. Being led by such thinking will give the party no chance even of a comeback, still less a victory at the polls! — © Mark Alexander

Kemi Badenoch: Argentinian President Javier Milei Would Be ‘Template’ for My Government
THE GUARDIAN: Tory leader says she can fulfil same role as Milei, a far-right leader promising big cuts to public spending
Kemi Badenoch has said she aspires to become Britain’s version of Javier Milei, the Argentinian far-right, chainsaw-wielding president whose driving mission is slashing the size of the state.
Asked whether the UK needed its own Milei and whether she herself fit that role, Badenoch, whose party is languishing in third place in the polls, said: “Yes and yes.”
Milei is a self-described anarcho-capitalist who came to power in 2023 promising to dramatically cut state spending. He has often expressed admiration for Margaret Thatcher.
In an interview with the Financial Times, Badenoch said Milei would be the “template” for her government. Kemi Badenoch's Big Brexit Speech Yesterday
Kemi Badenoch is a bloody disaster for the Conservative Party. She has zero chance of reversing the party’s fortunes. In a short time, Badenoch will be nothing but a footnote in the history books.
The problem with Brexit is not that it has been badly executed, though it is true that it has been badly executed. The main problem with Brexit is that its execution should never have been tried from the start. There is no way that Brexit could have worked, regardless of how it was executed. No country can decouple itself from the greatest customs union in the world, which is on its doorstep, and expect to be able to thrive. This is economics 101!
Only a dimwit would have suggested a Brexit referendum. Cameron, put a referendum forward, and he was just that: a dimwit.
Kemi Badenoch need not bash herself on the head with Brexit being badly executed. Fact is that its execution should never have been tried in the first place.

Kemi Badenoch Elected New Conservative Party Leader
If I am not greatly mistaken, the Conservative Party has just hammered the final nail into its own coffin! Conservatives can now write their own epitaph, too!
My visitors will know that I have been saying for years now — ever since that ridiculous Brexit and that succession of duds as leaders — that the Tories were going the way of the Whigs before them: into oblivion.
