LE FIGARO: Des dirigeants d'une vingtaine de pays commémorent la libération du camp, il y a 65 ans.

Une centaine d'anciens prisonniers - contre deux mille il y a cinq ans - participent ce mercredi au 65e anniversaire de la libération d'Auschwitz-Birkenau. Dans quelques années, les derniers témoins de l'Holocauste auront disparu. Sans eux, quelle mémoire en garderons-nous ? À quoi sert le Musée d'Auschwitz, puisque d'autres génocides ont montré qu'il avait échoué dans sa mission de prévention ? Comment donc enseigner Auschwitz à des générations qui n'ont ou n'auront plus de lien direct avec cette tragédie ? C'est sur ces questions que les ministres de l'Éducation des pays membres de l'Union européenne, réunis exceptionnellement à Auschwitz, sont invités à plancher ce mercredi matin, en marge des cérémonies officielles auxquelles assisteront le président et le premier ministre polonais, Lech Kaczynski et Donald Tusk, le chef du gouvernement israélien Benyamin Nétanyahou et les délégués d'une vingtaine de pays. TRIBUNE DE GENÈVE: POLÉMIQUE | Quelques jours après la visite de Benoît XVI en la synagogue de Rome, un évêque polonais à la retraite provoque un tollé avec ses déclarations négationnistes sur un site italien.

"La Shoah en tant que telle est une invention juive", a affirmé lundi un évêque polonais à la retraite sur un site catholique traditionaliste italien, à deux jours du 65e anniversaire de la libération du camp d’extermination d’Auschwitz, journée mondiale de l’Holocauste.

"S’il est indéniable que la majorité des morts dans les camps de concentration étaient des juifs, dans la liste il y a aussi des tziganes, des Polonais, des Italiens et des catholiques", a déclaré Mgr Tadeusz Pieronek, sur le site Pontifex.roma.it.

"Il n’est donc pas permis de s’approprier cette tragédie pour faire de la propagande", a ajouté le prélat de 75 ans, qui fut ami du pape Jean Paul II, en affirmant qu’il "n’est pas historiquement vrai que dans les camps de concentration ce sont seulement des Juifs qui sont morts". "Il y a eu beaucoup de Polonais, mais cette vérité aujourd’hui est souvent ignorée", a poursuivi Mgr Pieronek.

Pour Mgr Pieronek, ancien secrétaire et ex-porte-parole de l’épiscopat polonais, "alors on pourrait parler avec la même force et fixer une journée de la mémoire aussi pour les nombreuses victimes du communisme, les catholiques et chrétiens persécutés et ainsi de suite". >>> AFP | Lundi 25 Janvier 2010

The Child of Auschwitz's Kommandant

BBC: Barbara Cherish is a child of the SS, and the burden lies heavily upon her.

She knew early in her life that her German father, Arthur Liebehenschel, was involved in something terrible, something the family did not discuss.

Only later, as an adult, did she discover he had run part of the Auschwitz concentration camp for five months during World War II.

The knowledge gnawed at her, but it took a life crisis - her divorce and the death of her sister - to spur her to delve into the past and piece together her father's story.

The result is a book in which she struggles to reconcile her love for the father she never knew with the knowledge of his crimes, which saw him sentenced to death in Poland after the war.

"As a child, I was never really allowed to talk about my past with my family. I heard some things as a small child, about the mystery father, about Auschwitz. I never really processed it because I was so young. I knew it was something bad.

"There was a guilt there, I think that we all have. That we carry the guilt, being the…" she hesitates, "the children of the perpetrators".

Born in 1943, she was placed in foster care aged six. Her new family emigrated in 1956 to the US, where she has remained.

Stylishly dressed, Barbara arrives early at a San Diego cafe and apologises in advance, saying that "sometimes I get emotional" while telling her father's story. As predicted, she later becomes tearful. >>> Mario Cacciottolo, BBC News | Monday, November 16, 2010

LE FIGARO: L'homme assure avoir agi comme simple intermédiaire dans le vol de l'inscription «Arbeit macht frei» de l'ancien camp d'extermination. Selon lui, une personne était prête à verser plusieurs millions d'euros pour l'acquérir.

Un ancien dirigeant nazi suédois de 34 ans, soupçonné par les enquêteurs d'avoir participé au vol le 18 décembre dernier de l'inscription «Arbeit macht frei» («Le travail rend libre») de l'ancien camp d'extermination nazi d'Auschwitz-Birkenau, a reconnu vendredi sa participation.

Anders Högström, qui a fondé et dirigé entre 1994 et 1999 le Front national-socialiste - le principal parti néonazi suédois - a raconté avoir agi comme simple intermédiaire dans le cadre de cette affaire. Neo-Nazis Suspected of Raid on Auschwitz ‘to Rewrite History’
TIMES ONLINE: The slickly organised theft of one of the most potent symbols of the Holocaust sent a wave of outrage around the world yesterday.

The sign that hung over the gates of Auschwitz extermination camp, where more than a million people died during the Second World War, was stolen in minutes. Polish police suspect that the culprits were either neo-Nazis or acting on behalf of collectors or a group of individuals.

The slogan wrought in iron, Arbeit Macht Frei (“Work sets you free”), was the cynical welcome to those entering the camp in the 1940s. One million of the 1.1 million people who died at Auschwitz were Jewish.

The theft in the early hours of yesterday was seen as an attempt by right-wing extremists to muddy the narrative of the Holocaust.

“This act constitutes a true declaration of war,” said Avner Shalev, the head of the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial institute in Jerusalem. “We don’t know the identity of the perpetrators but I assume they are neo-Nazis.”

Poland is treating the recovery of the sign from the site, near Cracow, as a matter of national honour. President Kaczynski said: “I appeal to all countrymen to help the police to track down the sign. A worldwide symbol of the cynicism of Hitler’s executioners and the martyrdom of their victims has been stolen. Germany Donates £50m to Auschwitz
THE TELEGRAPH: Germany has donated more than £50 million to a global fund that aims to preserve the site of the Nazi German Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp in Poland.

The Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum said that the 60 million euros pledged by the German government represented half the total it needs to ensure the future of the Second World War site as a permanent memorial to the Nazis' victims.

"This is a great day! The plan for the long-term preservation of this memorial is becoming a reality," said Piotr Cywinski, director of the state-run museum and head of the Auschwitz-Birkenau Foundation which was launched earlier this year.

An Auschwitz survivor, Wladyslaw Bartoszewski - a former Polish foreign minister who is considered a moral authority in his country and set up the foundation - hailed Germany's sense of "responsibility with regard to history". >>> | Thursday, December 17, 2009

Israeli Prime Minister Lashes Tehran: Says nuclear Iran threatens the world, not just Jews
THE WASHINGTON TIMES: UNITED NATIONS (AP) | Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu waved designs of the most infamous Nazi death camp from a U.N. podium on Thursday, exhorting the world to stop Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.

And Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez told assembled world leaders that he smells hope not sulfur, a small compliment for President Obama, after branding President George W. Bush as "the devil" in his last speech to the world body three years ago.

Just days after Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad once again denied the Holocaust, Mr. Netanyahu used his speech before the U.N. General Assembly to warn of another catastrophe.

He held up a copy of the minutes from a notorious meeting at Wannsee Lake, where top Nazis formalized plans for the systematic extermination of Europe's Jewish population.

"Is this protocol a lie?" he asked.

Then he brandished original construction plans for the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp - a representation in chilling detail of gas chambers, crematoria and other facilities where 3 million Jews perished.

"The most urgent challenge facing this body today is to prevent the tyrant of Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons," he declared.

Iran denies that it is producing nuclear arms, but Israel, the U.S. and other world powers do not believe it and are hoping to curb Tehran's nuclear ambitions through a series of sanctions. Mr. Netanyahu warned that Tehran's nuclear program threatens not only Israel, but the entire world.

"Perhaps some of you think that this man and his odious regime, perhaps they threaten only the Jews. Well, if you think that, you're wrong. You're dead wrong," he said. >>> Associated Press | Friday, September 25, 2009
