Isn’t it high time that Obama spoke up for freedom? Isn’t it high time he stood by the side of the young people of Iran who are so obviously crying out for help to overthrow the tyranny they have to live with, and live under?
Obama said that he didn’t want to ‘meddle’ in the internal affairs of Iran. When did the idea of ‘meddling’ ever stop Obama before? He has meddled in the US car industry, he has meddled in banking affairs, he is meddling in the health-care industry, and he is going to meddle in European affairs, by insisting that the EU accept Turkey as a member state, even though most Europeans want nothing to do with the accession of that predominantly and backward nation to the Union. Yet, when it comes to ‘meddling’ in the affairs of Iran, Obama wants nothing to do with it. Funny that! Strange that!
Iran suppresses its people. Iran’s system is totally corrupt. Iran is brutal with the Iranians. Iran is totally un-democratic. Iran is also enriching uranium under our noses in order to get the atomic bomb; yet Obama feels that it would be wrong to ‘meddle’ in its internal affairs.
For God’s sake, Obama, this is a gift on a plate for you! The young of Iran have done all the work. It is high time, therefore, that the situatiuon be exploited. The vast majority of the educated people of Iran do not want the theocracy they have to live under. This has become self-evident in the last few days. Instead, these demonstrators want their human rights and freedom. They want freedom from tyranny, freedom to live their lives as they choose. Yet the best thing that you, Obama, can come up with is that you don’t want to ‘meddle’.
What a weak, lame excuse! It’s time for you to grow a backbone. It’s time for you, Obama, to get tough. It is not in the best interests of the world for this corrupt system to survive. After all, who the hell would want to be ruled by boring, old, bloodthirsty farts like the mullahs of Iran? And who wants to allow them to stay in power long enough to get the atomic bomb.– ©Mark

Good point.
For an American President not to stand up for the freedom of these protesters in Iran is unconscionable!
I conclude that BHO doesn't want to upset a particular someone or particular someones? Just who are these people he's so careful not to offend right now?
BTW, some of BHO's supporters are saying that BHO's Cairo Speech has inspired the protesters -- a good thing. Well, if it IS true that BHO has inspired the protesters (which I doubt), then he's letting them down now.
I dread what's going to happen in Iran today and over the next few days.
PS: I tweeted this essay.
Always:
First of all, thanks for tweeting it.
Like you, I dread to think what's going to happen in Iran today, and in the coming days. There could well be a bloodbath there.
As for Obama, I think the man is weak and cowardly. Compare his approach with that of Reagan's, when he told the Soviets to "tear down this wall". After all, the Soviet empire was far, far mightier than the mullocracy of Iran; so it was far riskier for Reagan to say that.
This is the Iranians' chance to gain freedom. If they lose this chance, they might not get another for a long time again. This is also a test of Obama's courage and resolve to help his fellow Muslims, the people whom he professes to hold in very high regard. If Obama blows this, he will go down in many people's estimation.
I doubt that Obama's Cairo speech had anything much to do with this social unrest, indeed if it had any influence at all.
I'm beginning to think that these violent demonstrations for Mousavi, the reformist, are not so much pro-Mousavi as pro-liberty. Iran is coming to the boil – there are very many people who are fed up to the back teeth with all the restrictions. They want a better life. The "boring old farts" of Iran are not about to bring them the liberty they so crave.
As I have thought since the beginning, we might well be witnessing another Iranian revolution. And if this is indeed so, then what a damn good thing that will be. I just worry about the needless loss of life that another revolution will bring with it.
I am deeply disappointed that our president won't stand up for the young Iranians who are crying out for help in achieving their freedom. There are a number of speculations about why he might fail to do so, as Mark points out. Given his eagerness to meddle in a plethora of other matters that he should not touch, I don't believe a word of what he says. I think that this is further evidence that he is a Muslim pandering to the mullahs. Look again at the disgusting bow he made to the king of Saudi -- makes a decent person want to ... [you know what].
Cybercrusader:
Your president has at last spoken out. His statement is rather weak for my liking, but here it is. Not very inspired leadership, I must say. But, as I said on the post, it's a step in the right direction.
That obsequious bow Obama made to the Saudi king was, as you implied, enough to make anyone want to vomit.
